That was my point, if Lowry centers the 2nd line, what the team needs is a big upgrade on Iafallo in the top 6.
People have to think of it conceptually.
If Lowry is the 2C he's still the shutdown center unless you replace him with someone as good in the defensive zone. When he had Ehlers and Iafallo as the winger that was a shutdown line, so I'd say no way does Gabe get on a shut down line.
That's why I think last night's game was an indication of how Arniel sees his lines.
Kupari got the shutdown role with Nino and Apples as the wingers. But that's probably where Scotty is leaning to, the best shutdown line in the league. That generates secondary offense. With Lowry instead of Kupari.
Now I know everyone is going to say that the need is a 2C between Ehlers and Perfetti, but realistically Perfetti has been more inconsistent than Namestnikov. And there's the fact that Vlad and Ehlers have some chemistry, and Namestnikov doesn't get scored on much, which can counteract Ehlers game when it goes bad with turnovers.
I really think this is the tough spot. Where the unicorn 2C is maybe Nelson, though I'd give it less than a 10% chance that he'd waive to come to Winnipeg, but I'm still not sure the guy getting kicked off the line is Namesnikov. So far Perfetti has been dropped off that line more than Namestnikov, that should be some indication of how it looks going forward. This is Scotty's team and he has expectations, that starts with defense. If Nelson was the add, I suspect he'd want the speed on the wing, someone who can skate with Ehlers. And defend with speed, since it would drop off from Vlad to Nelson. Maybe the add is a big scoring RW to complement Namestnikov and Ehlers. Say a Boeser type.
It's not clear cut to me which way Chevy is going to go here.
I think he's hesitant this season to disrupt chemistry that's been built. An outside player may not immediately fit in, and the longer you go to the deadline, the less time you have to fit them in. With Monahan the results were definitely not instant, I'd say the first weeks were a struggle, and it was only the PP where he first made his mark. Now you will have less time to integrate any player and a center in particular is important in how they play in Arniel's system, for the defensive side, so I see guys like Cozens being no gos in that respect. I think it's a real tough decision to be honest. Is there the right fit out there? Is it best to use Ehlers as a defensive player to create offense, or is it better to have him play more freewheeling without the grind that Lowry's line brings?
Chevy talked about the possibility of going big with trades, but he also mentioned that the best year the Jets had, the team that won the Cup, Washington, only made minor moves at the deadline. Kempny was their only impact acquisition
It should be noted that Caps team was stacked at C, with Backstrom, Kuznetsov, a prime Eller, and a young Chandler Stephenson up the middle.
I don't have any answers here, just some thoughts.
