GDT: 2024-25 season game 82 LA kings vs Calgary Flames @6:30pm 4/17/25 (Makeup game)

LA has played well this season. But things change when playoffs start. They try to play physical, and take a bunch of penalties because they don't play that style during the regular season. That's why I like how Florida plays. They play the same during the season, and the playoffs. And if they don't, their coach will flip out. And he doesn't wait to do it in the locker room, he'll do it on the bench in front of everyone.

The Flames are a good team, better structured and more consistent than Montreal and Vancouver, you send a "B-team" you'll get 5-1

The sole purpose of this game seems to be getting guys their first career goals.

This game was all about that. The sole highlight of the game was Ward getting his first, and washed away the putrid 3rd period.
I was hoping Koehn Ziemmer would get the call up too in a meaningless game.

I know the real goal of last nights game was to come out of it injury free. But dang, that was a bad effort -- not a good springboard to the playoffs.

If our future playoff performance is predicated on the final game of the season where the team has little to play for, is scratching their #1 goaltender and forward, rather than the 81 previous games where they've collected 48 wins.....WE ARE IN BIG f***ING TROUBLE.

WIthout looking it up can anybody tell me what the record of playoff teams in their last game of the regular season over the past 5 years is?

You expect someone…without looking it up….to know what the game 82 record is for all 16 playoff teams for the last 5 years?
This is a perfect example of how I fail to communicate sometimes....

My intention by asking that question was for the reader to begin by having the precise reaction you did.

"That's absurd! Impossible even! How or why would anybody know that information!"

My HOPE when asking questions like that is that the next thought would be "WHY would he ask something so impossible there must be some sort of larger point being implied... such as.... who cares what that record is. The record in final games of the season of the last 80 playoff teams is irrelevant. Who could POSSIBLY care about that information.... OHHHHHHHHHH I get it. Who cares."

But clearly I have failed as a communicator.

I understood what you were trying to do. It’s just a bad way to frame a bad point. Several of those last games of the year matter a great deal with regard to seeding or clinching a playoff spot. I agree that last night’s game 82 meant nothing for either team, but it easily could have and often does. All this radiation is messing you up man.

Even then that seems dismissive of other points being made.

Even records are just misleading. When there's an emotionless game like last night where the Kings just meandered into the playoffs, it's different from having a high tempo game that they just lost in OT against another team trying to make the playoffs.

Of course, I'm sure people will react to that and say "but the Kings won't be so flat in the playoffs, so you're drawing a false equivalence."

I know that. But the question is what's going to be their emotional range at various stages of the series.

The point we're making is that was an ugly performance of a meaningless (standings-wide) game against a playoff performance. It's just not inspiring.

Now if you have some other point other than "who cares, it was ultimately a meaningless game and we won't care once the playoffs start," feel free to correct me.

But it's also dismissive when the issue wasn't that they lost (which record citing only cares about), but how they lost.

No radiation just my usual run of the mill failure to communicate.

Well yea... I was trying to dismiss the angst over one bad game in a very long season.

I'm as guilty of attempting to tone police a bunch of strangers on the internet as anyone else.
angst?!?! um, ok. whatever.

listen, they could have won 100-0 last night.....and the real angst would still be around. not because of the game last night -- nope, it's because they have been one & out for three straight years. Not only that, but getting their arse's handed to them on the PK while being pushed around on the ice like 80 pound wussys by the big bully. It's like they are Danny LaRusso in The Karate Kid -- except Danny actually wins at the end (Kings get bullied and lose).

Until they step up and complete the job, the angst is there regardless of a game 82 result. Also, btw, regardless of games 1-82 for that matter.
