GDT: 2024-25 season game 66 LA Kings vs Minnesota Wild @5:00pm 3/17/25

Saw that one coming, glad I stepped out

So long as the division is within reach these guys will continue to choke, it’s in their DNA

Ready to back into the playoffs for the umpteenth time, nothing is different this year, just start mentally preparing yourselves for the loss at Chicago. I’m not even going to DVR that one.

The Kings did what they have done for most of the season, once it got to the third and they were tied they went into the shell and tried to hold on for OT. It's mostly been a successful strategy, and in this situation, with a team you aren't competing with for any kind of seeding it's the right move (Minnesota seemed content to do the same too before the penalty), but it makes for terrible hockey, like the first couple rounds of a Floyd Mayweather fight.

You wouldn't see this nearly as much in the sport if every game were a 3 point game and regulation wins meant a lot more than they do now, you would have seen a different game in the third.

They still control their own destiny for home-ice, but now the Chicago game feels like one you don't want to lose. Hoping after the game at the United Center a couple weeks ago that they come out and take it to the Hawks.

Playing guys like Lewis that dont deserve to play (much better options) sets a bad precedent. Now apply the same concept to PP1 and you might win a round. Kings were outscored 11-0 on special teams v Edmonton... basically its like spotting them a little over 2 goals per game... thats whats going to happen again, book it.

Im sure you know this argument: That would mean the better teams would pull away sooner making teams fallout of contention sooner and more games totally meaningless toward last 1/3 of season. I'd take that tradeoff, but Buttman wont go for it.

I see we are really going to be dishonest and continue playing stupid about this. Cool.
Yep. Because there was more anger over Lewis taking ice time away from Helenius. Or Akil Thomas. Over virtually any other problem on the team.

He got plenty of hate before he was turning into a liability. To pretend otherwise is either plain forgetting or applying selective memory.

Back to back games of uninspired hockey and scoring only one goal each time. Worrying about Lewis wasn't going to turn the team around. Maybe this highlights why the vitriol was misplaced and unnecessary.

Of course there’s much bigger problems, but if you can’t even clean up the puke on the linoleum, you ain’t gonna remodel the kitchen.
Maybe we should care about taking out the source of the puke before cleaning up the puke? So, you know, there's not more puke that could come?

Yes, I know, it's been discussed here.

It also gets the Axl's of the world to come on messageboards and claim their 30-30-9 team is .500 and thus average, not realizing the 9 points are given away to other teams and so a team that is 30-30-9 is not really average. But they'd notice if it were 18 extra points given away. Same reason these guys get so excited for 95-100 point seasons, even though that is really only a slightly above average point total with all the 3 point games.

There are just way to many tied games that just die in the third period, not just a Kings issue, although with the Kings excellent defensive system and inept offense they are one of the most effective at going into the shell and holding on the the 3rd period buzzer.

Ya before there was OT, the same thing occurred in games - preserving the point in a tie. Then adding sudden death OT or tie (without the OTL point) was a little better for end of games, but made the OT a generally useless exercise. Then they added the OTL point but that regressed the end of game play, but made the OT more exciting. Then 3x3 was an improvement, but they still had the problem of regulation going into a shell which was the original problem they wanted to solve. I agree 3 point reg wins solves it.

Winnable game. Oh well.
No Oh Well! If the Kings want to win a 1st round playoff series, this is the type of game you need to absolutely win on the road against a still playoff caliber team! All the Oilers have to do win 3 in Edmonton and steal one game in LA! Hiller coaches too conservative on the road and that is why the Kings are not a good road team. Okay they got that PP goal but they did 0 even strength, so all that PP goal did was save the team from being shutout in the game. It's unfortunate that Bruce There It Is, is not coaching this team. With his coaching style on the road, he would push the team to go for the win! I rather see a team go for the win in the 3rd period and lose, instead of being conservative and losing it in the 3rd!

I thought both teams brought good intensity. Minnesota wanted to bounce back after a bad home loss Saturday night.

It's just frustrating as hell losing a game on special teams as usual. And losing every time it looks like the division is in our grasp.

That said, I did like some of what I saw. If the Kings keep playing on the PP like that they'll score some goals.
