Having cornered the market on AHL level defensemen (Englund, Burroughs, Jones) a lightbulb went off.. why dont I look at our own AHL affiliate for other options - couldnt be much worse.

Desperation. King's are 1 win up on Vancouver & Edmonton from dropping to the last wildcard spot. The team has been playing bad as of late. Moverare, Spence is a helluva second pair.

I don't think you can ever plan on building a Cup winning team.

If you want to be able to take several runs at it in a short, consistent period, you need to have top players in the same relative age/experience range at multiple positions (preferably center and defense), cost-controlled secondary production, and leaders with the ability to define and implement a culture- and demand accountability - that builds over time. Your GM must keep enough picks, prospects and cap space available to identify key missing elements when they appear. You can do all the work and still suffer enough misfortune to undue it, but I don't think it works the other way around. Nobody lucks into contending.

Despite recent efforts to turn the nhl into soccer, i think the game comes down to defense goaltending and physicality.
Florida panthers are the present model allthe fwds are bought in to playing defense and backchecking. Despite the fact he thinks he's an astronaut, bob is borderline great.
Build through the draft first as a priority and fill the gaps with well considered aquisitions.
Defense wins championships.
A definition of luck i like is that luck is where preparation meets experience

You seem to ignore that we all agree successful builders get lucky.

But the successful GMs have other qualities in common that separate them from other teams.

Didn't Edmonton get lucky with McDavid, RNH, and Draisaitl? Why aren't they Stanley Cup winners yet? Was Florida just luckier?

I guess san jose's bad luck was named todd maclellan
