Very important win for San Diego, only 5 points out of a playoff spot as it stands. Realistically they have to win at least 15 of their last 23 games to have a shot at the playoffs but they are playing some decent enough hockey at the moment.

Gulls started slow and Condors controlled first half of the first period, with Dansk making quite a few saves. Better second half of the first period from the Gulls, Colangelo had a good chance from the faceoff circle, and then Gulls hit the post and then had a shot cleared off the line on the PP after a great interchange between Pasta and Bailey.

Second period was a bit of a similar story to start but I'd say Gulls were the stronger team overall, Sidorov got the opening goal on the PP after a great puck retrieval by Mysak. Gulls gave the goal straight back after a Hinds giveaway (I'll expand on this later), lead to the puck being held in and a shot ripped home from the point. Gulls got right back up to 2-1, Colangelo good pressure behind the net leads to the turnover, Luneau keeps in the clear attempt, passes it to McKeown who one times it home.

Third period was all Bakersfield, Gulls were hemmed in constantly and Dansk made several outstanding saves to keep the Gulls up. Got a couple of empty net goals late to seal it.

1st star: Dansk
2nd star: Caggiula
3rd star: Sidorov

Dansk obviously was the best Gull really has steadied the team recently in net and looks much better then he did earlier this season.

I thought Nesterenko had a solid game, he's looking very good as a two way forward on the Gaucher-Caufield line, that makes it a proper shutdown line for the Gulls. I was particularly impressed with some of his PK work in this one, had a really active stick and broke up several plays on the PK and managed to get clears (especially in the 3rd period). I hope the Gulls keep going with this and continue to develop him as a two way forward, as he looks much better in that role, then a scoring role.

Sidorov-Mysak-Pasta line was quite decent too, Sidorov took about a period and a half to really get going again, but I hope even after Meyer is back they keep them together, as they aren't afraid to shoot as a line and generate some pretty decent chances. It was good to see Sidorov throwing his body around a bit too.

In terms of Hinds, it was another frustrating moment from him when it comes to the puck and just dumb giveaways leading to chances. Hinds has the puck here under minimal pressure, Gaucher (17) is the open option (the second Bakersfield defenceman off screen is just past the blue line) and is the obviousoption you should be hitting to get an easy zone clear. Passing lane to Myatovic (bottom of screen) is clearly shut, especially as any forward that is half decent is going to ensure that cross ice pass can't be made.

Hinds despite this, fires it through the middle of the Gulls zone looking for Myatovic, resulting in an easy interception for I believe it was Derek Ryan, and Condors score about 10 seconds later, especially as due to the interception Gaucher, Myatovic are effectively scrambling from that point as they were both looking to push up the ice for a 2v2.

This are the sort of moments Hinds still has regularly so far this season, that makes me not be a massive believer in him. He just doesn't see the ice well at all and turns the puck over way too many times in situations he shouldn't be. He's young, but I worry when players are making mistakes like this when they are already a couple of years into pro hockey, as it's not really something that can be massively improved.

It's why I like Warren more as a defenceman, he understands his limitations and pretty much always goes for the simple option, it's a trait that will see him be an NHL regular for me.

Granted I know sweet f*** all, and Hinds will probably come up to the NHL and look like a world beater while Warren goes nowhere, but it's just my thoughts watching them both with the Gulls.

Another game v Bakersfield tomorrow coming up for the Gulls.

We do have Helleson as a sample of AHL bad player, but NHL good player. IMO, the difference is that San Diego was trying to make him into an all-around d-man to become a top-4D or top pairing D. At the NHL level, the Ducks limit what he can play and playing to that strength. Helleson is a shutdown D, but he was being exposed to becoming a top-4/top pairing D at the AHL level. It might be similar to Hinds, who is more known for his defense than offense.

If one were to experiment, then the AHL is a better place than the NHL level for youth prospects. I hope the Gulls coaching staff is trying to reduce those riskier plays for safer ones.

I'd like to believe it, but experimenting (and I don't really believe that is the case with Hinds at all if I'm honest) has nothing to do with Hinds having poor vision on the ice, it's just a serious weakness in his game really.

Nestrenko-Gaucher-Caufield is one of the best checking lines in the AHL, feels like they just dominate most games against the opposition forwards. Just consistently getting good zone most shifts and generating offence. At the risk of being a broken record, Nestrenko on that line was one of McIlvane's best coaching decisions this season, probably a decision that has saved Nestrenko's NHL prospects too.

0-0 with 8:34 left in the 1st. Both teams have had some pretty good chances.

1-0 Condors, Luneau fails to clear a puck infront of the net, Stefan then shoots the loose puck from an angle and it trickles past Dansk.

Caufield has just been obliterated with a headshot by Brown from the Condors, Howe jumps off the bench and wins the fight.

Caufield gonna be gone for a few games with a concussion I daresay, and Brown should be suspended for a few games with a jumping headshot.

Headshot completely uncalled and I'm guessing Howe gets a game misconduct for jumping off the bench.

The replay is brutal, I'm not sure if it was Biakabutuka or Luneau, but they really led Caufield into the kill zone there. But Brown gets nothing but head and leaves his feet on the hit.

Gulls commentator reckons it was shoulder to shoulder, but that's not what I see, especially as Caufield went down holding his face. 🤷‍♂️

Howe only gets 2 (instigating) + 5 (fighting) despite leaving the bench for the fight. I love the AHL

EDIT: They just updated the penalties 10+10+2+5 for Howe who's gone for the game. Gulls rolling with 10 forwards basically for the rest of this one I daresay, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do when the opposition cheapshots like that.

Gulls down 1-0 after 1. Pretty even first period, unfortunately Condors goal was coming as they created some good chances on the back end of that period. Nesterenko-Gaucher-Caufield was the best line for the Gulls, who I'd say had at least half of the shots of the Gulls in that first period. Caufield going straight to the locker room with an injury is a pretty brutal blow for a team that is already incredible short on forwards.

In terms of the Gulls playoff race:
Silver Knights won 4-2 over the Admirals today
Roadrunners (who hold last playoff spot in the Pacific) currently up 3-0 after 2 over Abbotsford
San Jose 1-0 over Ontario in Ontario after 2.

Basically all the results are going against the Gulls right now, if all these scores stick (including the Gulls) they will be 7 points out of the last playoff spot, with Tucson and Bakersfield both having games in hand on the Gulls.

Pretty big 40 minutes coming up for the Gulls really.

2-0 Condors just over a minute into the 2nd period.

Puck was loose infront of the net, Heatherington and McKeown leaving it sitting there, Derek Ryan collects it goes through the blue paint untouched and manages to beat Dansk on the far post.

2-1 Gulls!

Not sure which Gulls player it was, but he held the blue line and chipped it into the neutral zone, Bailey picks it up with speed and on the breakaway snaps it 5 hole. Bailey's 6th goal and 11th with the Gulls in his 13th game.

Haven't seen Caufield on the ice in the 2nd period so far.

Looks like the lines have been mixed up due to the injury and Howe being tossed.

Gaucher been centreing Myatovic and Lopina so far in the 2nd period, looks like Nesterenko and Sidorov are rotating on the left wing of the Mysak and Pasta line.

I'm guessing Gaucher-Nesterenko may get some double shifts later in the period with one of Myatovic or Lopina.

Still no official word on Caufield just yet.

2-2 Gulls just like that!

Luneau brings the puck out of the defensive zone, gets to the red line and draws two Condors defenders and backhands an excellent pass to Nesternko springing him and Pasta on a 2v1, Nesterenko draws in the Condors defender and plays it across to Pasta who rips it home.

Gulls have had some really good pep in their step since they got the first goal back.

Going to need a few more goals as Dansk looks pretty shaky so far in this one, not tracking the puck well at all.

3-2 Gulls!

Gulls on the PP, Luneau with a great cross ice pass to Pasta from the blue line to the right face off dot, who rips a first time pass across to Carpenter who's open on the edge of the crease with no-one near him and he redirects the puck into the net with the skate.

Luneau and Pasta are absolutely cooking this period, Condors getting nowhere near them.

Myatovic-Lopina-Sidorov line is certainly a choice. Been pinned in their own zone everytime that combination is rolled out.

I know it's kind of forced because of the missing forwards, but putting Sidorov on a line with defensive forwards is just a waste of time.

3-3 after 2 periods, Gulls will take that. Bit of argy bargy between Colangelo and Carrick to end the period who pull each other to the ice. Nesterenko-Mysak-Pasta line had a fantastic second period. Pasta and Luneau are the best players on the ice by far, Condors just not able to contain them so far in this one. Gaucher and Sidorov seem to be rotating with Myatovic and Lopina based on the 2nd period. I'd be expecting to see a bit more Gaucher and Sidorov and with Myatovic and Lopina rotating in the 3rd period if I'm honest. Definitely worried for the 3rd, back to back missing two forward, Gulls gonna have to dig deep.

Tuscon and San Jose both won, so Gulls need the two points here badly.

Didn't quite realise just how filthy that Pasta pass was on Carpenter's goal. Especially great that it was on Brown who was made to look silly.

4-4

Gulls leave a player free in the circles after an extended defensive shift who rips it home. Not sure what happened with Dansk, shot went to his right, but his movement was like the puck had been passed to his left.

Like I said Gulls need a few goals as Dansk looks shaky tonight .....

5-4 Gulls in OT on the PP! 6 wins in a row for the Gulls, first time in 5 years I believe.

Luneau, Colangelo and Pasta played the puck amongst themselves up high, swapping positions before Luneau played it to Pasta on the right circle who one timed it back to Luneau, his one timer went wide and bounced off the end boards back in front and Carpenter hit it home.

What a massive, massive win for Gulls in the circumstances both from results elsewhere, but due to playing with only 10 forwards for most of the game.

My top Gulls players were Pasta (1+2), Nestrenko (1+1), Luneau (0+3) and Carpenter (2+0).

Ironically, Pasta was on the ice for seven goals in total (all four Bakersfield goals and three San Diego goals) but not necessarily his fault on the goals against. He continues to impress with the puck, still not the fastest skater (and never will be), but the production is down to an improvement in skating giving him more space, and his confidence is just sky high with some of the plays he's making right now.

Once the second period started, Nestrenko-Mysak-Pasta were the best line of the game, just completely dominant offensively, combining for 11 of the Gulls 26 shots. It was nice to see Nesterenko didn't look out of place when put up onto that line after the Caufield injury, but I hope he stays with Gaucher and continues in that two way forward role.

Luneau looked REALLY strong on his skates in this one, I almost wonder if he's lost a little bit of speed but gained more strength and movement on his skates, that's the impression I'm sort of getting the more I watch him. You can tell he's almost too good for the AHL at times with some of the plays he makes. But like I've said all season, it's going to be about the defensive side of things, and doing things like engaging physically and using his frame defensively is the sort of thing that will make the Ducks take further notice of him.

Bailey is such a difference maker too (once again). Have I mentioned that he should be re-signed yet?

Noticed that Bret Hedican is noted as an interim assistant coach on the report card which seems new, as he wasn't listed last month, going back this is the third row he's been listed as such with Kris Sparre still listed as an assistant coach. I wonder if the Gulls are moving him up from his role as the player development analyst?
