I mean, you would think they could use the pick on someone who would stay in the system for a while. Instead they use it on an overager that they have zero (apparent) interest in.

The Gulls have been bad for a long while. Just mirrors the big club. Is improving the team all that hard to ask?

Teams are taking bigger swings the further away you are from the first round, including overagers, in hopes one can find NHL talent. Of course, the further away you are from the first round, the worst the prospect's chances are making it to the NHL.

tl;dr answer to why King wasn't signed to an NHL contract:
no NHL contract spots available. Ducks are at 45/50 NHL contract spots, technically. Two QO contracts are waiting for their contracts (LaCombe and Nesterenko), which means 47/50 NHL contracts.


Because the Ducks have accrued multi-round picks for the past few seasons as well as having some NCAA'ers arrive (LaCombe and Colangelo) pre-Verbeek, the premium value becomes contract spots. Currently, the Ducks have 45 NHL contracts out of 50 available slots. LD LaCombe and LW Nesterenko had their qualifying offers (QO) met and are waiting for their contracts. Then that would bring the roster spot to 47 NHL contracts.

The Gulls top-4 scorers are no longer under contract with the Ducks: C Aggozzino (64 pts), C Gawdin (55 pts), Gulls' captain LW De Leo (48 pts, but a 0.92 ppg rate), and D T. Carrick (44 pts). There are three contracts left available for this season, which would appear to lessen the talent available for the Gulls. One contract spot might be left open to potentially sign a collegiate player at the end of the season like RD Ian Moore. That leaves two NHL contract spots available if one wants to address the Gulls roster.

Another route for the Gulls is to sign players to an AHL contract. An AHL contract is different from the NHL contract such that it doesn't affect the NHL contract size because AHL contracted players cannot play in the NHL. Some players last year on an AHL contract with the Gulls were F Ben King and G Suchanek. King could still be with the Gulls this year, but not with the Ducks. Should King improve his game drastically, then he might be able to land an NHL contract. That is what happened with Suchanek last year and signed an ELC with the Ducks.

Three of those contracts are going to slide, though, so they’re nowhere near the limit. The real answer is they have probably too many prospects playing pro as it is and don’t like King’s chances so they moved on, simple as that.

Gaucher was one of three players to play all 72 games for the Gulls last year. Does he crack the Ducks lineup out of camp or is he back in the AHL?

Our GM thinks Gaucher is a couple of years away from the NHL at an April season ticket holder event. His words on Gaucher is at the 36:05 mark of the video below. I have it start there; just hit play.

Could be wishful thinking but I feel like he’s due for a breakout. He had stretches where he looked totally in control of the ice, even when he wasn’t productive.

The furthest east they go is Des Moines. They play Toronto this year, but in SD.

edit - no, I’m wrong! They actually play in Toronto to open the season. I might make that trip...

Curious about the order you're listing them. Seems straightforward for the most part but if Harkins and Luneau are in San Diego it wouldn't make sense to me for them to be behind who you have listed on the depth chart.

The order means nothing. I didn’t think it was worth ordering them in any way, especially because we don’t even know if some of them will be on the Gulls at all.
