Speculation: 2024-25 Roster Thread

I guess the chances of us bringing someone in seems so remote to me that I'm not expecting much of a change in the forward group. Bottom six tinkering is more of what I anticipate.
This would be the second summer in a row where verbeek says “ I want to sign a top 6 forward” he took big swings at both stamkos and marchesault. I don’t understand why any of you would fade his comments on this. Ducks are close now. Free agents aren’t coming into a rebuild anymore. Even if verbeek needs to yrade for said winger. I’m almost at 100% certain That he brings said winger in.

I think him striking out on Stamkos and Marchesault speaks to just how hard it is. I think it was reported he offered them better deals than they got, but still got turned down.

I don't doubt he wants to bring one in, I'm just not confident he can.

Naw. Would be super shocked if it doesn’t happen this summer.

Hope you’re right, but I just don’t see it. If he couldn’t get it done with Stamkos or Marchessault despite offering more, what makes this summer different?
What makes this summer different, is verbeek knows as a Gm. He needs the team to take major strides in competing next season. He likes his job, we have a plethora of young d he can trade for as pieces in a deal for a top 6 forward if he can’t like one in free agency. As a Gm, of a team thats clearly lacking scoring. He can’t strike out 2 summers in a row. He seems like an ego stubborn maniac. Not the type to swing and miss again.

I think there will be a lot more motivation to get something done when the team finishes around 10 (possibly even less) points out of the playoffs rather than damn near 40. Last offseason he could easily look at it as there not being much reason to hand out a contract/trade offer that exceeds what he’s comfortable with because the team was very likely to miss out anyways, this offseason it could very well spell the difference between getting out of the rebuild next season or not

That's a good point. It makes sense for the urgency to be there, but I'm still skeptical he'll be able to accomplish something needle-moving. Might be a different story if free agency wasn't so barren.

I’m not going to predict exactly what it’s going to look like and I’ve already said I think a Marner esque splash will be unlikely but one way or the other I do expect him to be very active

I hope you're right. Seems like it could be a very pivotal offseason. Otherwise it could be potentially disastrous to stall out when it seems like the team should be starting on the upswing.

He's definitely going to be active. Unlike BM, PV has shown he's not scared to take risks. But he also can't force guys to want to come here. Even with offering more than anyone else he couldn't get Stamkos or Marchie. I'm not sure how that changes this summer especially if Cronin is not gone by 7/1.

My tinfoil hat theory is that the development status of OCVibe will play a role in how aggressive Verbeek is - as the development gets closer to finishing, he will have more leeway/pressure from the Samuelis to go bigger.

As a STH the season felt off from the very beginning with all the parking lot construction going on. It all felt very haphazard.

Murray knew he couldn't sign FA's to come here, but he did utilize his great drafting as trade capital often. Can't argue with his eight playoff appearances in 10 seasons, including playoff bound for six consecutive seasons, five Pacific Division titles, and two WCF's. Then the rebuild came. The team just had to collect prospects until it could become relevant again. That is the normal cycle.

Murray got a few top-6 talents into Anaheim such as Kesler, Rico, and Eaves. Murray literally bet the farm on Kesler with hopes of extending Kelser's stay in Anaheim and you think that's not taking a risk? Murray was also able to extend Rico and Eaves after trading for them.

Is the parking structure supposed to be done by next season?

Why is any established "good" player going to want to come here as long as Cronin is still here? Especially if they are an offensive dynamo?

Overpaying another Killorn is not the "success" I want to see, but that's probably the only kind of player who would sign here for the money. Don't forget, even down to the wire Killorn was negotiating to stay in Tampa. He came here as a last resort, not because he wanted to.

BM traded for Kesler (who was only willing to accept a trade to 2 teams!) at least 1 probably 2 years too late. How many years did we go without a legit 2C? The biggest "risk" BM ever took was the expansion draft and we all know how massively that backfired.

I suppose Koivu was in 09-10. But post-Mcdonald, yeah we were incredibly weak at 2C.. in 07-08 (Dead Weight year), 08-09 (might've won the cup if we had one) and 10-11 through 13-14 probably. Perreault might've been an adequate 2C on a bad team but not on a contending team - Kings had a huge upper hand in that series because of that. Murray was really kind of poor at acquiring assets inorganically (trade/FA). Drafting was pretty good.

On the Kesler trade, Vancouver was totally hamstrung and we were lucky to enough to be on his limited list. I don't think that trade is like some huge win for Murray. A big win for a GM is like Burke acquiring Pronger or even Pat's Gauthier trade.

The most interesting thing to me is the shot numbers relative to the expected goals. Obviously it's not great that they're giving up 56% of both the shot share and the scoring chance share. But they're still roughly even on expected goal share, which means they're either not giving up many high danger chances, or the team is generating a lot of high danger chances while they're out there. Given the goal discrepancy, my guess is that it's the latter.

Mintyukov has 5 points and Helleson 4 points in those 8 games. It's hard to tell how much they've played into that offense, but it's undoubtedly a good sign.

Were we lucky or was it because we were the top of the Pacific for the past two seasons before Kesler wanted out of Vancouver? Pronger requested a trade out of Edmonton. Cutter requested a trade out of Philly. And Murray was part of the reason that Ducks were able to nab Cutter. All of the GMs got the opportunity because player X wanted out of team Z.

Burkie left the org high and dry with a terrible cap situation along with abysmal drafting. It's b/c Murray was good at acquiring assets as he was able to get to the playoffs eight of the 10 years before the rebuild. It's unfortunate that injuries plagued Kesler and Eaves after the 2017 WCF. Murray was also good extending the life of a draft pick such as drafting C Holland in 2009 and converted into Kase in 2014 draft, which then became Perreault in 2020 draft. He got three bites in the draft with from one draft pick. Murray did have a hiccup in drafting during 2016-18, where he went heavy forward and neglected drafting defensemen in the first three rounds often.

There is an element of luck in that we were one of the teams on a tiny trade list that he had.

Was Pronger's trade list ever disclosed? Maybe Burke shouldn't get as much credit for that, but i kind of remember it being out of the blue. Seems like he did a really great job putting that together. With Kesler, we were hearing for a while that we were in the mix for him along with Spezza and were very much in the driver's seat - i just think that deal was a slam dunk - and it was probably the only 'big' acquisition Murray ever made (FA/Trade). If you compare him to Burke or Doug Wilson in that respect, it's not impressive. I think the Gauthier trade is probably the most impressive of the 3 actually, Pat deserves a lot of credit for scoping that out and jumping on it. There were a lot of teams in the mix.

No argument about Burke's drafting, he was awful and bailed on the team ultimately. Murray was solid with that. Something that's interesting about Burke/Murray is that despite Murray working with Burke in Vancouver and Anaheim for several years, his strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures were kind of the exact opposite of Burke's.
