Same, this crow is delicious.
I thought he looked more dynamic than Faber in college in some games and thought he might be a good mid pair guy, but I was really disappointed with his offensive game his first year. He looked like an in-between type of player who might just be a bottom pair guy. It’s great to see him learn how to use his skating and puck skills to produce points… if he can up his intensity/physicality on the defensive side he might be a good #2.

Now if we can get Minty to show what he did last year… and if Zell can learn to defend like a Spurgeon… we might have three #2 dmen…. It’s going to be interesting who takes the offensive lead.. you would think it should be Zellweger and Lacombe has taken the lead. Minty was an offensive machine but that ability has been muted with him being more defensive.

The Athletic Player Card: Jan 15 and Feb 9 comparison

View attachment 975966

Forwards
  • Line 1 slightly improved.
  • Mac's offense on the rise.
  • Line 3 defense got worse.
  • Lundy and Leason's defensive play improved.

Defense
  • The top pair offense and defense improved.
  • Minty's offense is slowing creeping up.
  • Trouba's offense and defense improving.
  • Bottom pair has regressed offensively and defensively.

The one thing that stands out to me from this and your previous chart is that Zegras is not succeeding individually on the wing. His overall play has clearly been a positive impact on the team. However, it seems the data and eye test again show he's not a winger, and he is being utilized incorrectly. He is a center.

A great article on Dostal (and a couple of other young netminders) on the Athletic today: Link. Here is the opening paragraph to the article:

By most measures, the Anaheim Ducks are the worst defensive team in the NHL this season. They’ve allowed more high-danger shots (8.76) and scoring chances (32.34) per 60 minutes than any other team. And yet, the Ducks are league average in goals allowed.

This isn't even meant as a swing at Cronin but: imagine how bad the Ducks would be defensively if we had an offense-first coach.

In theory, they wouldn't have to spend as much time on defense with a more offense-inclined coach as per the old adage "the best defense is a good offense".
Yeah, having the ability to actually move the puck up the ice and then have controlled zone time would prevent the too-frequent episodes of spending an entire shift playing defense, getting the puck out to the other team just enough to get a line change, or best case scenario 1 shot with list possession, then doing it again fir the next 2-5 shifts.

Watching the 4 nations last night, really makes me miss the getzlaf/duck days even more. Knowing that with guys like big Leo. We just don’t currently have that type of physical and mean game that is so entertaining and needed in high pressure games/playoffs. And our guys are long ways away from being the old red wings skill teams either. We’re just kind of meh right now.

The irony is that Gaucher, the most bemoaned prospect on these boards, is exactly that type of player

He's mostly bemoaned by just one poster, who's still hand-waving to distract everyone from Jack Eichel's neck.

Gaucher is my type of bottom 6r for sure!

I haven’t watched him nearly at all in SD, I know he’s physical, but can he actually be described as “mean”?

Going from his time in the Q, I watched him injure 2 guys in one playoff series with big hits and he was constantly giving guys shots in front of the net. I don't know if he's mean in a Tom Wilson sense, but he's definitely annoying to play against.

I see him def as more of annoying/pest…. Tough to play against but I wouldn’t say mean.

In one of the preseason games I saw him in, he punched a guy in the face a few times (gloves on) for a questionable hit. He also seemed stronger than I thought he would be. He threw the guy around a bit. He seemed like he had a bit of a mean streak then.

I mean I’ll 100% take a mean streak lol… we need a little more of that in our line up/bottom 6.

As long as it’s not crossing the line of dirty

Love reading this! And we have Viking Solberg in our pipeline too.
