Speculation: 2024-25 Roster Thread

Lolz people are gonna love seeing Killorn that high. He plain and simple has been one of the Ducks better players this year. Any way you slice or dice it, he seems to be higher up on the list.

I think Killorn is rated so high b/c of his defense. On the player rating card on The Athletic, Killorn owned the best defensive rating on the team at 86% better than his peers. Carlsson has the second best defensive rating at 73%. Killorn is tied for 5th on team scoring. Currently, he's the only Duck with a CF% over 50% at 51.7%. Those are probably all the reasons why he's ranked 4th comfortably on the Ducks GameScore sheet.

Sure, we rag on him when his hips can't move like Jagger often, but he does know how to tilt the ice from defense to offense. That's music to Cronin's ears! It's just at the offense part that stutters intermittently.

Once again, Killorn isn’t a problem. Killorn with Carlsson is a problem, and that’s not Killorn’s problem, it’s Cronin’s.

Yeah the best way I could describe it would be like putting Rakell and Kesler together in 2015. Both good players but why would you put them together when you could have Getz-Rakell and Kesler with Cogs and Silf.

I wasn't thinking about Leo at all actually. a lot of people have generally complained about Killorn in GDTs and elsewhere this year. also not just here, on twitter and stuff too.

I don't agree completely with your (and others) assertion regarding Leo/Killorn because Leo hasn't really shown chemistry with really anybody this year and he it's not like it's only he and Killorn on the ice, there are other players on the ice with them.

Another point, according to evolving hockey, Leo has spent 585 minutes on the ice at 5v5. 433 of the minutes have been on a line with Killorn and 152 minutes have been on lines without Killorn. The xGF% of the Leo/Killorn lines appears to be 46.9% while lines that have Leo and no Killorn are at 39.4%. Much smaller sample size, but starting to think this Killorn/Leo thing is overblown - or at least it isn't worse than everything else.

Leo hasn't really had extended chemistry with anybody, although Killorn/Leo/Mctavish sticks out has having a much stronger xGF. I think it's interesting that Cronin hasn't been shy to change other lines but that pairing has pretty much been stable throughout the year. Maybe it's because they like it for some analytical reason.

Who were the alternatives when Leo wasn’t on a line with Killorn? And also what that tells me is that he hasn’t been given a chance to find chemistry with anyone else, because like everyone has been complaining, he’s stapled to Killorn.

Srsly when the f can we just be a little angry at the lack of development from the dude we drafted over fantilli instead of blaming killorn and the limemates he’s had? Isn’t he supposed to lift the players around him up?

Who else should he be tried with that's actually good? He's played a lot with Z, he played with Gauthier a lot earlier in the year - he's played with McT and that's the one i think there's a legit gripe for not having seen more of.

He's even played with Terry as shown below - those are also the top Killornless lines

Edit: unless people want to see the Terry line blown up but they've been our most consistent line. But that's basically the implication.

So the most common line not including Killorn was a total of 26 minutes? And we’re surprised he can’t find chemistry with anyone else? I’d personally have him with Cutter and Mac, although that leaves someone on an off wing. Let Z center Killorn because those two actually are producing together and try Fabbri with those two.

He's played a ton with other players, i just don't buy that it's Killorn screwing everything up for them.

Killorn isn’t screwing anything up, he’s playing his game. A style of game quite a few of us feel isn’t suited to Carlsson’s strengths. That’s it. We’re not saying Killorn is at fault, and most of us also point out that Carlsson needs to share blame for his bad plays he makes far to often.

Yeah he's probably not perfect but Leo has played with other players too. He's had chances to develop chemistry with other players and still hasn't produced a lot.

and i agree with the last point for sure

McTavish Carlsson Colangelo
Gauthier Zegras Killorn

McTavish and Carlsson produce, Carlsson and Colangelo looked dangerous in one game they played together.

Zegras has chemistry with everyone, now that Gauthier has started scoring goals that line might work. Gauthier from early in the season to now is a much different player. He couldn't buy a goal for a while, now he's got a bit more confidence in his game.

This keeps the Terry line together.

Killorn's speed (or lack thereof) is the problem. He still has good instincts and he's rediscovered his hands miraculously. I'm stuck with how to get the most out of him - feels like him next to Z or Leo IS the answer until we upgrade the top 6 and he can play lower in the lineup (my preference)

I think Mac and Killorn are on the same page of how to play, but Killorn is better defensively. I'd like to see Mac center Killorn and have Cutter on the wing.

Vatrano-Strome-Terry
Cutter-Mac-Killorn
Z-Carlsson-Fabbri
Harkins-Lundy-Johnston (if he actually delivers hits and fights instead of hugs)

I’d be more than fine with that.

I think the problem right now is he needs to play with someone that can slow the game down. Carlsson hasn't learned how to do that (yet?). Zegras can, McTavish can, Terry probably can. Carlsson seems to need guys that can play with the speed and pace he does.

I agree completely with Mac/Killorn, but I think Cutter is one of, if not the fastest forward we have right now and might be hampered by those two.

Z is pretty quick but he is good enough to slow the game down... I kind of wonder what this would look like:

Vatrano-Strome-Terry
Mac-Z-Killorn
Cutter-Carlsson-Fabbri

If we’re going that route, I’d prefer send Fabbri to whoever will take him and create a somewhat sheltered kid line. Cutter- Carlsson- Colangelo or even try Pastujov if we think he’s earned that cup of coffee yet.

We have that Russian kid coming in March, the one from the khl. Hopefully he fills lundys spot next season

Cutter has improved when playing with Mac. If Mac and KIllorn play the same style/game, then it makes Cutter's role easier because he knows what Mac and Killorn will be doing on the ice. Plus, since Killorn flips the ice better than any Duck, then Killorn can pop the puck in the DZ to Mac and Mac already knows to launch it to Cutter for more breakaway options. I like that option so much better for Cutter!

I want Z with Carlsson b/c both share the same offensive problem... Cronin stifling the finesse out of them. Z knows how he can work around it a bit and Carlsson can relate as well as be able to play like Z. They just need a big bodied net crasher and good at defense. Maybe Colangelo?
