Without question the oddest thing about this season so far is that the Ducks have considerably faster players on the roster this year but still play slow as hell. The whole legs-not-moving in their own zone shit blows my mind. We are getting trapped because no one is skating

Ehh. Do they? Rico, Silf, Lyubushkin left, and Gauthier, Fabbri, Dumoulin added. Not much turnover and outside Gauthier, the additions are not a bunch of burners.

I think that's a coaching thing. It seems deliberate. The hope I have is that it's step 1 in Cronin's message - don't take penalties. And it's worked to this point. The Ducks are top 10 in PIM/60. Hopefully once they've mastered that ability, Cronin will start having them be more aggressive in pursuing puck carriers.

It's a thin hope, but after watching the team get blitzed over and over again, it's what I'm hanging onto.

Silf's skating was a dog compared to the Kesler/Cogs/Silf days.

Fabbri is an above average skater as is healthy McGinn. I think i expected real change on the back end since we were giving consistent minutes to Zelly, Minty, LaCombe and assumed Luneau but it just hasn't translated for the team.

It could be attributed to a lack of energy. Our d-Zone system requires them to do a ton of skating and they may just be gassed in certain games/situations.

I saw this chart on Ducks reddit:

Dostal on the best team. Four Ducks on the worst team & honorable mention. Two former Ducks/Duck Prospect on the Worst team as well in Max Jones and Henry Thrun. We know how to pick 'em! ::: shudders :::

These ratings are from Hockey Stat Cards - it's their grading system and not a definitive grading system. I will agree with Dostal's ranking as the best netminder for October wholeheartedly!

An early review of our d-men and seeing what they did last year. The stats are from Hockey-Reference.com. H-R's "Expected +/-" is their own stat which takes into account shot location and shooting percentage league-wide from said location.

Here are last year's D-men stats.

Excluding Luneau (because his games played is such a small sample), none of our d-men posted above 50% Corsi For Pct (CF%). We also had two willing hitters in Gudas and Lyubushkin. Although LaCombe had the third highest Giveaways, his differential was very low at -4 due to his high takeaway production.

This season's d-men stats

Excluding Vaak (due to a small sample), our d-men overall play has become worse than last season. Gudas is our main hitter. Dumo is hitting at a lower rate (1.40) than Lyubushking did last season (2.04). We have a few players in negative double digits in Takeaway-Giveaway Differential column in only 10 games or less! Our defense is regressing. Silver lining is that it's only been 10 games and the defense should improve... right?

I wonder if they are just managing minutes. Minty also plays PK right? We have about 4-5(Zell, Fowler, Minty, Luneau, Lacombe) guys that can play PP but much fewer you want to see on the PK (Radko, Dumoulin....Minty Fowler?) Imo I thought Lacombe played well on the PK last season.

LaCombe did play well on the PK, which is part of the reason why he was 3rd in blocked shots on the team last year. As for why LaCombe on the PP over Minty, it could be the team wants one traditional PP QB like Fowler and the other PP QB being more of a rover type like Zell or Minty. It could be partly managing minutes and partly developing Minty's defensive awareness on the PK unit. Minty's CF% at 39.4% at even strength isn't great, but maybe confining Minty to only half of the ice is the development path?

3 goals combined between Gauthier, Vatrano, McTavish, Fabbri, and Zegras through 10 games, and 2 of those were empty netters.

Our D has provided almost nothing. Mintyukov had 2 in 1 game and hasn’t scored since. Zellweger definitely tries to help out offensively, but the numbers haven’t come yet.

The lack of offense is really something. Frustration has to be setting in for some of these guys.
