Well ultimately we need McTavish to develop into a strong 2 way player so we're not looking for a winger to cover for his lapses. If a few years from now he's still taking lazy penalties and missing assignments, then he'd better be putting up crazy offensive numbers.
A tale of playing under two different coaches?
2022-23 (Eakins): 80 games played, 17g + 26a = 43 pts, -19 rating, and 44 PIMs
2023-24 (Cronin): 64 games played, 19g + 23a = 42 pts, -23 rating, and 86 PIMs
Mac was more defensively aware and didn't take so many stupid penalties in 2022-23, his rookie season. This past season, he really wasn't defensively responsible as he would cheat to get an offensive counter. Although, I do wonder if his PIM's and deficiencies coincide with being injured. In his first 20 games last year, Mac was healthy and crazy good! But he was playing injured or rotating out due to injuries for the rest of the season.

Mac was just undisciplined all season long! Also, he was a ppg player for almost half of his games played. He truly took a step forward with his offense. Let's hope he can improve his defense and discipline for this coming season as well as stay healthy. He looked buffed out this summer, which could lead to him playing staying on the ice healthy than playing through injuries.
