2024-25 Roster Thread #2: Midseasonnar

So the lines aren’t set?

What if I told you the Flyers used 25 line combos last night compared to Dallas' 12? With 21 of them being full shifts compared to about 9 with full shifts for Dallas.

For a team with "set lines" they sure do always have a lot more line turmoil than every team they face.

I have some ideas.

If they actually double-shift Tippett, I might nuke the WFC. I would sooner watch Rocky in goal.

This isn't that goddamned hard, it's not like we're spoiled for choice.

Foerster-Cates-Brink
Tippett-Frost-Konecny
Lycksell-Couturier-Michkov
Farabee-Poehling-Laughton

Sanheim-York
Ristolainen-Andrae Zamula
Seeler-Drysdale

Give Hathaway the night off every once in a while, he's the oldest active forward anyway. (D-Lo's a few months older.)

Those aren't actual lines; they are line combos per effectiveness and time played. So TK/Tippett are a common denominator on two lines being good, and we also get to see exactly how severely Poehling dragged those two down compared to how much better they are with Frost.

But overall...Laughton shouldn't be here and neither should Hathaway. Put Lycksell there.

I figured as much, but I saw Tippett twice and had an allergic reaction. I know he's a better player than I give him credit for, but his playstyle irritates me in a way I don't even know how to properly express. It's like watching a dog play basketball, but without the "Aww, that's adorable" factor.

Agreed that Laughton, Hathaway, Ristolainen, Deslauriers, and Johnson should be elsewhere. Our veteran leadership should be Couturier and a few guys in the 28-30 range, like the Travii. (Granting that Laughton and Risto are both 30, but they're "get value out of them" 30, not "here on a one year prove it deal, but a kid could push them aside if they work for it" 30. Very different.)

Michkov might play more being with Torts’ guys now.

I said before the season they're the isle of misfit toys.
Even Torts said the Cates line was a lucky happenstance.

Couts needs to move to LW. His lack of speed is more glaring than it was five years ago.
Frost is playing better but struggling to find chemistry.
TK and Tippett need a center who can keep up with them but also CYA.
Farabee, where does he fit?

But there is no rush to resolve these issues, this isn't a veteran team facing a closing window that doesn't want to write off a season (see Pens, etc).

I expect Briere to be more active this spring/summer, but it makes no sense to pursue FAs, other than an older center on a short-term deal who still has offensive skills, to buy time for the centers they drafted/will draft this summer. Maybe pick one up as a salary dump.

Briere needs to add more young assets and be patient.
And pull the plug on players who don't seem to be in their plans moving forward.

The only thing in hockey that Tippett does well is score goals. There is no other positive elements to his game. When he's not scoring, he has zero effectiveness. Not the kind of player you sign to an 8 year deal.

Now you're contradicting yourself. You said earlier better goaltending and a couple of decent starters and the Flyers are a top 8 team. LOL Now it's they need to be patient and add more young assets. Couturier does not need to move to LW. His game was never built on speed. He is still a solid defensive center who can chip in points. Wingers still have to skate.

Put farabee with michkov. Best case, garage(lol it autocorrects farabee to garage) finds his game, normal case he gets his numbers inflates his numbers and hopefully inflates his trade value.

Farabee-Couts-TK
Foerster-Frost-Michkov
Tippett-Cates-Brink
Laughton-Poehling-Hathaway

Foerster makes more sense to put with Frost-Michkov as I see Tippett being a poor fit due to his one dimensional quick strike play and poor vision once in the OZ. Foerster will add a more well rounded player to the line and a better physical presence/force for Frost-Michkov along with his excellent defensive metrics and wicked shot.

3LW Tippett can then be the driving quick offensive threat with Cates centering a more structured defensive role. Brink the primary playmaker.

Farabee-Couts-TK, I have faith they will figure it out.

Unless that's only going to a selection of Inside Edge members, that seems like a humongous shitload of tickets to be handing out

It went to them all.

My question is more so the use of the word games.

I initially filled the survey out assuming that it would be for one game. I redeemed my seats and then a friend who hadn’t yet filled out the survey asked about availability so I went back in and looked at a different game and the code worked. I then went into the game that I redeemed and it said it was already used.

So, uh, I’m pretty sure they’re giving out a pair of tickets to all of the games they had available (7).

They have huge shitpiles of seats available and this will at least get people in to pay them for food and drinks, instead of being empty. Seems the market for seeing the Flyers is trending towards "I'll go if I don't pay to get in."

Farabee's game will come around when the Flyers accept him for what he is and not try to make him into what they want. He's not a Tom Wilson like head banging forward but is a skilled player. When Giroux was traded away, he was asked who was theist talented Flyer left on the club. His answer was Farbee. Heck the club even tried to get him to play center ice for a short while. Instead of playing off of his skills, they tried to bang him as a square peg into a round hole with the results being that he's currently wrecked as a player. Player development 101.
