Acquiring elite talent through FA or trades is definitely Flyers.

This team can BS you all they want but they have always undervalued the draft. They fail at it for years, and don’t care to address the putrid scouting, or stupidity in willingly perpetually picking outside of the top picks.
There has to be some rh d-man we can acquire through over draft trading compensation.

Good teams use all avenues to add talent.
The key is patience, don't make moves just to make moves.

I'd gladly trade a package of players and picks for a legitimate top 6 center 25 or under. Odds are they'll never have that opportunity, but if it arises . . .

They drafted badly from 2016-18, but not since then.
(5) 1sts, (5) 2nds, Frost and Farabee all they have to show for those three drafts, though they did nail Cates and Ersson in the 5th rounds (scout picks). Some bad luck, some bad picks.

(6) 1sts, (6) 2nds since Flahr took over, York, Brink, Foerster, Andrae, Gauthier/Drysdale, Michkov
Jury still out on Tuomaala, Bonk, Bjarnason, Jett, Berglund, Gill
later picks with a shot, Wisdom, Kolosov, McDonald, Zavragin, Barkey, Knuble, Ciernak, Sotheran, Rouhonen.

But as Hextall shows, takes about five years to get a good read.
Hextall looked very good after the 2014 and 2015 drafts, then . . .

Which tells me that they think they’re only missing one piece.

They’re going to send out the assets that are supposed to build with the quantity approach and then pay said person. Or they really do believe that they can package their middle of the pack first round picks for a top five pick which is never going to happen.

I will love to see who this player would be. I’m sure the scouts will nail it.

God help us.

It really is hilarious how they dont realize every position on this team is a need. You can always go BPA over fit because BPA will always be a fit. And they need to get talent in bulk, instead of plinking away one at a time in a slow Hextallian and never-ending cycle where no timelines mesh.

They don't need quantity, they need quality.

Add Jett and another top 6 center, move Couts to LW and they're very deep at forward.
Frost, Cates, Jett, top 6 at center, Couts, Farabee, Tippett, Foerster, Michkov, TK, Brink,

Add a puck moving LHD to pair with Bonk and a stay at home LHD to replace Seeler and they're solid on defense.

And they're starting two young goalies with two more on the way.

They need quantity and quality. You just described that, too.

JUST a top 6 center superior to Couturier, a hope that Jett also justifies taking Couturier out of C, two good dmen.

That's a lot.

BTW, they do not need a stay at home dman. They need to upgrade on Seeler. Stay at home dmen are largely useless and a detriment now. Of course we have two, and both need to be upgraded. Quantity of quality is required. Especially because they will need multiple shots at achieving these things as not everything will pan out, and that's even assuming they suddenly stop being horrendous at development.

The reason Luke Schenn has stayed relevant so long is that he's worked with guys like Oates to expand his skillset beyond that.

When I say "stay at home" there is always one D-man who tends to trail the play. You want him mobile enough to join the attack or get back, but there is only one puck. If you have a puck dominant offensive D-man, doesn't make sense to pair him with a similar player.

Bonk should fill that role, he's not an "end to end" guy, but if the defense swings toward say Andrae as the puck handling LHD, Bonk can sneak down the right side and score - "bumper Bonk" has shown he can shoot the puck. Otherwise, he's smart, good size, mobile enough to be a solid two way guy.

Same way for Drysdale to be effective he has to have the puck, and he can be more aggressive with a partner who can CYA for him. So you'd like someone like Seeler, but maybe bigger, faster and a bit more skilled.

Very few players can do everything well, and they tend to go at the top of the draft.

This outdated role thinking is fatal to efficiency. There is only one puck. And sometimes the other dman has to handle it. If only one dman can do anything with it, that makes the opponent's life a lot easier than if both can make plays. Deliberately accepting a "stay at home" dman is shooting low.

you still need some impact players to get this team over the hump, this team on paper isnt going to be enough.

The Flyers have an impact player, at a very affordable price, in TK:

Another interesting thing to note is just how strong Travis Konecny is at setting up scoring chances. That goes back to last season, when only Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov earned more scoring chance assists per 60 according to Sznajder’s tracked data, and Konecny has picked up right where he left off this season.

That may be a surprise to some — Konecny’s 60 assists over the last two years ranks 63rd — but that’s partially a result of playing for the Flyers. Konecny is one of the team’s few (if only) elite offensive drivers and it’s hard to create goals for teammates if they’re not gifted goal scorers. On another team with more support, Konecny’s passing ability would likely shine much more.

One reason to believe that is what he’s managed this year from a play-making perspective when paired with Philadelphia’s other best wingers: Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov. Konecny has played 216 minutes with at least one of them this season and has 2.22 assists per 60 during that time at five-on-five. In the 256 minutes without, that drops to 1.17.

And for those who think it doesn't matter who you partner an elite scoring D-man with:

Hughes is obviously the engine of the blue line, but chemistry is a two-way street and Hronek does help bring out the best of Hughes. Before his injury, Hughes was dominating at five-on-five with 59 percent of expected goals, but that’s dropped to 47 percent in the 10 games that Hronek has missed. That 12 percentage point drop is obviously not all Hronek and some of it can be attributed to other contexts, especially since Hughes’ new partner is Tyler Myers. The team as a whole is struggling and to Hughes’ credit, he’s still outscoring opponents. Still, it should create some appreciation for what Hronek is: a solid No. 2 defenseman who brings out the best in an elite partner, not just some guy next to Hughes.

16 stats: Mikko Rantanen’s next contract, Travis Konecny’s breakout, Linus Ullmark’s return

Sorry, one more chart-share from me today. Sure, Andrae is the problem and has to spend time in AHL.
