They weren't "smoked."

I don't care how you lose by 5, losing by 5 is getting smoked.

A bit of context: the full list of teams for whom 5 goals is less than an average performance since 1920 are the Gretzky Oilers 5 times (81-82 through 85-86) and the 70-71 Bruins. Any game you lose by 5? You got smoked.

Man. That is just not how these things should be used in single game samples. You can set an arbitrary threshold if you want, but it's got to be better than this. Everything from 42-58 or so is a pretty even possession game to me. Cut it to 44-56 if you want to be a little more strict, but there is no meaningful signal to be found in these tiny samples.

That goes at least treble for HD metrics. You're talking about a total of ~20 5v5 events.
Doesn't change the point, you don't want to be run off the ice.
Single games are variable, but you don't want to be on the bottom edge of that range on a regular basis. Staying at 50% or better on your bad nights is a good sign.

Every team has off games, but the first step is consistently playing well at 5x5.
As long as they're competitive night after night I'm not worried.
At this point the focus should be on basics, cutting back on stupid mistakes (getting caught out of position, bad cross ice passes, careless penalties, etc.)

I can bring in a veteran PP QB to stash on my 3rd pair, or a PK specialist on my 4th line, but if my top 9/top 4 can't match up night after night I'm up shit creek without a paddle.

Who cares? AV and CF are ancient history at this point.

Abols is worth watching, Richard is pretty much a known quantity, fast but not elite speed, good offensive skill package, question defense and limited forechecker.

Abols looked like he belonged, decent skater, good size that he knows how to use, good hands. Can play LW or C. He was coming on in LHV the last few weeks as he adjusted to the NA game. If he shows enough the next few games he could make them more comfortable moving Laughton (provides the center depth they need in the short-run).

Yea but the important thing is is that the players like playing for John. So nevermind if we continue on in mediocrity if the players like it.

Not like any of the players would publicly say that they actually hated the coach so we just will assume that they like playing for him.

Someone who was GM less than 2 years ago, who was the boss of the current GM, and whose assistant GM is still here (not to mention the braintrust that hired CF is still here), is hardly ancient history.

CF is irrelevant. As is Briere.

When everyone around them has remained the same. This is an incestous organization run in a collaborative fashion.

Not shocking when Comcast has shown to be a POS ownership group - which is also not shocking when you look at the rest of their portfolio.

Did you not listen to Briere.... He pretty much said Laughton isn't being traded because the locker room won't allow it.

You rarely hear any bad words about someone anywhere in the NHL circles. It's almost like everyone walks on egg shells to not offend because if they do they know it's over for them.

Abols is worth watching. LOL. He's 29 years old and has played 2 career NHL games. They need that to feel comfortable moving Laughton? That's incompetence and incompetent irrational thinking. I will explain it to you again. They are a team that has no future current path to cup contention. Why do they need to feel comfortable to move Laughton? They'll lose their place in the standings? Seriously, the way you think is absurd.

No he didn't. He said there's no urgency to trade Laughton or Risto b/c they're not UFAs.
So he can move him at the TDL or in June.
It's signalling, telling other GMs he's not desperate to make a move so don't bring me lowball offers.

As he showed last season, if the offer is good enough he'll move a player even if they're in the PO hunt.
He reiterated they're still focused on the future, a polite way of saying the current team isn't good enough.
And he made it clear they're not interested in adding rentals.

It's the same thing with every player that they bring up. They play decent. They're applauded and we get told they deserve a shot only for the Flyers to send them back down and then we get told that was the right move as they didn't show enough.
