2024-25 Roster…too soon?

Think the plan is to burn a year, allow us to re-sign him sooner and for hopefully cheaper.
Dumb. You burn a year of team control and he gets to UFA a year earlier. Even if you are handing him an eight year extension after next year that’s just one less year of his prime at the backend of it. This would be an awful decision.

the principal remains the same, you want a roster worth some multiple of the cap ceiling, when you have guys making league min that are top picks that makes it a lot easier...that said it pisses guys off but they could easily pull it off with Levshunov, sending Bedard back to Regina was never happening
True, but at this stage of the rebuild cap isn’t an issue, and by the time it is, these guys’ second deals are going to be inked, burning a year or not. 5 years from now, if they are a cap team that might change.

Are the Hawks worried about losing guys as UFAs? I don't think that's a big American market concern. That's Columbus/Winnipeg problems.

He'll still have 2 years of his ELC left after this season. If he signs for 8 years afterwards, we're talking a whole decade before we have to potentially deal with this.

and the better the player is the more valuable the decision is to extend the elc years, it means f*** all nothing if its some 4th liner that might have a fair value that is 1.5m or something, but when you're talking bedard who is worth 10m or something vs 925k thats a huge amount of value captured by extending elc years

He could cost more money, he could walk, the Hawks could prematurely hand an 8 year extension to a guy without him having been worth it and getting stuck with a bad deal, Levshunov could refuse to sign a relatively cheap 8 year extension and end up asking for a bridge which really presses the issue at the end of it (overpay or lose the player who has room to force his way out then). Team control is the most valuable you get from drafting a player so I wouldn't just give it up without a good reason.

and what is the surplus value of Levshunov on a 925k contract for 3 years past this one relative to pulling a year forward...the math is really straight forward that its better to defer the service time
Lev is burning a year of the ELC because he was playing professionally in the AHL, correct? Pretty sure the 9 games limit is when the other games are in the CHL.

its not just a question of losing a player, its bringing them a year closer to their true market value

Players almost never get true market value. They're either underpaid (stars/good young players) or overpaid (good players paid like stars/stars that are washed).

You think by burning the year, they risk him costing them more money? Wouldn't that be a bigger risk if they don't burn the year?

If Levshunov is walking a as a UFA, the Hawks rebuild has failed. They're a big market with a what should be a good team. I don't think they're going to have a problem re-signing the guys they want to be here and if they are, again, that probably speaks to how the rebuild went when they get to that point.

The fact that Lev deserves it with his play should not affect the business decision. Not with the team going nowhere. With only a handful of games left in the RS he should finish the season in RFD.
9 more games in the NHL is more valuable than closing the season in Rockford imo

Lev will head into the offseason knowing exactly what he needs to work on
