2024-25 Roster…too soon?

It's not about acquiring Ceci because he's good, it's about a replacement for a year or two while being able to free yourself from the Jones contract since people are worried about who is going to eat up 20 minutes a night without him.

And don't forget the team played better WITHOUT Jones in the lineup, so I really think his replacement is far less of a concern than you're suggesting.
I just don't think that helps the Blackhawks all that much. Now it would depend on what the Blackhawks would get in return for him but I'd rather have Jones with his contract on the team than Ceci with whatever he would likely sign for.

Oddly enough, the team did play better without Jones in the lineup but I still want to see what Seth looks like when he has a decent team around him.

I think the minutes thing gets overblown, but Cody Ceci is currently logging 20+ minutes a night for the Sharks on the right side and is a UFA after this season. Start with a top 4 of....

Vlasic-Crevier
Korchinski-Ceci

And then trying rotating one of these 3 on the right side on the third pairing. I'm pretty sure Allan played some games on the right side earlier this year and looked fine.

Allan/EDM/Kaiser
Anyone who watched the Oilers in the playoffs last year will tell you that's a really bad idea.

Comparing a team who went to game 7 of the SCF and their expectations vs the team that was the worst team in the league a few days ago?

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with Ceci or comparable and only threw his name out there for the crowd that is convinced we must have some veteran playing 20+ bad minutes a night.

The expectations of either team is that he play well. He didn't. And there's no reason to believe that will change.

Jones is inconsistent, but to someone's point, his contract isn't as bad as it originally was. If he waves his No-Trade clause to go somewhere he wants and the deal is good for the Hawks, then it will probably happen. I can't help think that if the team was battling for a playoff spot, Jones A game would be on display more often....are you paying attention, KD?!?!?!?!?!??!

Being greedy, would love to keep Jones another year, get a year of solid play out of him, then trade him in the 2026 Offseason when (a) more likely Levshunov and Rinzel are ready, (b) only 4 years left on Jones contract and (c) cap even larger.. at which point I think his value could be higher than now.

Risk is of course a BAD season and with him turning 32 on 10/3/2026, nobody has any interest at all.

Why teams might be interested in Jones, take a look at the UFA market for RHD. Also gives a flavor for what the Hawks would be staring at if Jones were to be traded.

Righthanded Potential UFA Defensemen 2025 (year of birth), ATOI 2024-25 season

2025:
Aaron Ekblad (1996): 23:32
Neal Pionk (1995): 22:03
Cody Ceci (1993): 21:47
Brent Burns (1985) 21:30
Dante Fabbro (1998): 20:20
Johnathan Kovacevic (1997): 19:46
Jeff Petry (1987): 19:11
David Savard (1990): 18:07
Travis Hamonic (1990): 17:25
Jan Rutta (1990): 17:01
Noah Juulsen (1997): 16:34
Will Borgen (1996): 16:18
Nick Perbix (1998): 15:28
Ty Emberson (2000): 14:53

Plus various guys that can't stay in the lineup/waiver fodder.

The future right side of this team seems to be becoming clearly. Now that Jones likely wants out and Murphy obviously won’t be around, it looks like it could be Lev-Rinzel-Crevier.

The left side however lacks clarity. Vlasic is the obvious surefire one. But you have Korchinski, Allan, EDM, Kaiser and potentially Schaefer if the Hawks win the lottery. It would be really nice if someone could really grab an LD spot and not let go.

Woof, that is one big poo-poo platter of RHD. Would be comfortable with about 2 of that 14.

Been thrilled with Crevier's progress, but not sure how you have clarity on RD with 2 guys who haven't played at the NHL level while underselling Allan as I think he's shown this year that he's a legit NHLer, and has 2nd pair potential IMO.

Powers article this morning.

It’s unlikely the Blackhawks re-sign Ryan Donato despite the season he is having. He is still more likely a trade candidate at the deadline. The Blackhawks think highly of Donato, and he has been one of their more consistent players this season, but the Blackhawks are starting to think more about their future roster construction.

The Blackhawks don’t expect Alec Martinez to seek a trade at the deadline. Martinez was asked about his future recently, and he said he was set on helping the Blackhawks for now.

The Blackhawks have gotten calls on Seth Jones lately, but it hasn’t been anything out of the ordinary. The Blackhawks aren’t likely to move anyone who isn’t on an expiring contract before this year’s deadline. Maybe that changes closer to the deadline, but there are no signs of that as of now.

Interesting. Especially the note on not moving Martinez or anyone not on an expiring deal (Murphy). The article also said that they expect Greene, Rinzel, and Moore to join the team after their college seasons end.

So assuming health, which is a lot to assume, Greene and Moore logically could replace Donato, Hall, and Maroon/Smith. But they're gonna have too many defensemen:

Martinez - Jones
Vlasic - Crevier
Allan - Murphy
Kaiser? - Rinzel?
Brodie?

I guess they could send Crevier and Kaiser back down to Rockford which would make their D core stacked with prospects for any kind of playoff run. That could be cool

I think Crevier is here to stay. Allan I can 100% see going back down especially since he's been getting scratched quite a bit recently.

I'm cool with that. I'm curious what they're gonna have to pay him to stay as he'll probably get an offer sheet. The dearth of right handed defensemen is ridiculous and I'll bet its gonna take $2M+ to sign him.

And this might sound crazy but I wouldn't be shocked if a team offered Broberg money for him.

This place is very strange and how you people analyze hockey is illogical I don’t get it. Who on their right mind will take Seth Jones with that contract and that length? The Hawks would have to retain salary or sweeten the deal somehow, no one is gonna pick up your garbage for free. Also what do you mean by “and the deal is good for the Hawks” thats a very general statement, what is a good deal to you? If you think the Hawks will get anything of value back you are kidding yourself, the Hawks would have to GIVE AWAY like a 1st round draft pick and retain salary to get rid of that garbage contract. If someone actually takes that without damage to assets or retention then that would be incredible but this GM is too stupid to pull that miracle off.

There's a distinct possibilty that Rinzel does not fit into the too many dmen equation. Minnesota should expect a decent run in the post season and Rinzel may only be rostered for several games. Think Nazar playing 3 game last year after he joined the Hawks.

So you think all of the reports on teams inquiring on Seth Jones' availability are fake?

Holy shit!!

I'm excited for Del Mastro to be up for sure by itself, but.... I'm slightly, super cautiously, also excited for what this could mean for the roster!!!!

Warming my fingers for the F5 mashing.
They’ve got 8 up not including Murphy who’s obviously injured.

There’s some corresponding move coming. Kaiser going down, maybe traded? Brodie going on waivers? Or god hope that Jones trade I’m desperately trying to will into existence.

Right there with you!!!

f*** I'll be bummed if it's a simple Kaiser sent down.
