You can spend money, you just have to realize the timeline of a potential winning main core of players is going to be players born 01 or later. So trying to artificially jam in a new, older core piece and just hope he ages like Panarin doesn't make much sense to me.
When do you think Marner will not be a good hockey player?

I think Marner does not make the Hawks a Cup contender in the next four years, because that doesn't align with their window. Accordingly, the Hawks do not need a Mitch Marner type talent right now, and should instead just wait for when the team is looking like one that is a "Mitch Marner" away from contention (and you can determine if a "Mitch Marner" type player is the sort of piece you actually are lacking, or someone else to maximize your roster/cap construction optimally.

You're not even bidding on Marner today, you're bidding on Mitch Marner five years now. I'll have a much better sense of players five years from now, in five years (or four, or three..) than right now. Even if everything unfolds perfectly and you have a 33 year old Mitch Marner that is playing awesome and well worth his cap hit as a slew of Hawks draft picks are hitting their own primes and the team is ready to compete, I do not think acquiring a 33 year old free agent that fits the team well is particularly difficult, and you could likely get them at a term that would resemble the remainder of Marner's theoretical term.

Exactly what should happen. I have a feeling they will want to make a splash sooner though to get the fans back, and to try and be competitive, but it will be a mistake.

No your bidding on Mitch Marner for the next 7 years. The first 4 years matter. He slots everyone in a spot they should be. The talent on the ice increases dramatically. Everyones level rises and the team gets to play meaningful hockey. Teams can be contenders with players that are 32,33,34,35.

Unless your getting elite talent from somewhere you are banking on 2025 unknown and Nazar to be elite talent besides Bedard because they will not be in the top 5 again after this year IMO.

Kucherov Stone Marchand Panarin Miller Kopitar Kreider Scheiflele Hyman Ovi Josi Pietrangelo Crosby Zabanejad Malkin Carlson Benn. These are elite/great players over 32 that matter and will still matter to contending teams/try to contend teams.

After watching last night I'm not so sure anymore. Unless these prospects are going to bring a ton of talent on offense I don't want to be this bad beyond this season. 8th worst offense in the league and 15th worst PP, it definitely looks that way when watching. Bedard gets keyed in on all the time.

Maybe we do need to inject some elite offense to next year's lineup. Bedard + top 5 pick this year + Marner/Rantanen/Kaprizov fills out half of our top 6 for the next 7 years. There's value to to that so our team can play well offensively

So sign players that are 32-35 to short-term deals at the appropriate time.

Signing 32-35 year old guys is going to result into overpaying for past your prime guys who want one last decent payday. Not a fan of that strategy at all.

We don’t have anyone in the system who is going to provide Bedard any relief. Best case it’s our pick via the 2025 draft which still may take 2 years just for him to provide that relief.

That's not a good excuse to fast track an unfinished rebuild. And being the 8th worst offense, with the 15th worst PP really isn't that bad considering how bad the team should be.

Why do we need offense in next years lineup? Just so they can please some impatient fans?

Yeah I understand why they "might" from a Danny Wirtz side of things, to justify the $75 face value tickets and not get a half empty arena with TV Carriers uninterested in showing your games.

But that's not my money.

Because our franchise 1C doesn’t look like he’s thriving with our current roster setup and it may not be in the team’s best interest to keep the sucking continuing until the 2026/27 season. He’s 91ST in league scoring as of today and is struggling to get good shots off IMHO.

We apparently have a really solid squad of young D prospects including 7th OVR Korchinski and 2nd OVR Levshunov, Bedard, our recent 1st rounders of forwards, plus a top 3 forward selection in this draft too. At some point you start moving forward. Are we really going to be a lotto team the next season or two AFTER this one?

Hawks tickets are still expensive and AFAIK they don’t have any issues putting asses in seats. People want to see Bedard play and will pay good money to do it.

Tickets were still expensive the year before we got Bedard. I’m doubtful that plays enough of a factor to speed up a rebuild prematurely

Feel like it was a week ago I was reading some fluff piece about how much chemistry he and Bedard have.

I didn't realize it until reading Powers' article last night, but the Hawks have only had one game where they were down by more than one goal at some point in the 3rd period.

It's still a trash team allergic to scoring, but they've at least kept all these games close until the end.
