Will PWHL Players Face The Sophomore Slump

The talent pool of PWHL rookies last season was deep. Will those young players who starred in year one suffer the dreaded sophomore slump?

Ian Kennedy

... Some attribute (the "sophomore slump" in hockey) to wear and tear on the body following a year of more strenuous exertion and schedule. There's also the idea that expectations for production and performance increase as players gain experience, and sometimes those expectations are stressful to athletes, or unrealistic in nature. ...

For some (PWHL players) , where they've been playing at the highest level in women's hockey internationally for years, it may help soften the predicted dip, but slumps and regressions are certain to happen. This season will also be different with an additional six games on the schedule with each team playing 30, instead of 24, games. Here's a look at the top PWHL rookies from last season and a prediction for their sophomore performance. ...

And now, something edgy from a different TIG contributor ...
Column: The PWHL Should Learn from Olympic Boxing Mess

Meredith Foster
Aug 17, 2024

The PWHL can learn from the Olympic boxing debacle, if they choose to.

What should have been the greatest sporting experience of boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting's lives was turned upside down throughout the Paris Olympics as controversy raged about their gender. Both women triumphed in the end, winning gold medals in their respective weight categories.

I'm not here to re-litigate the issue. Instead, I'm here to ask a question: how does the PWHL plan to protect its athletes if a similar situation erupts in the league? ...

PWHL Connections Beginning Their Seasons Overseas

The PWHL regular season is still more than three months away, but many PWHL players are already in competition this week internationally, and in the coming weeks in European leagues.

20 hours ago (August 29, 2024)

While the PWHL season itself remains more than three months away, several players who will ultimately end up competing in the PWHL this year have opened their seasons in Europe, both on international sides, and with club teams.

PWHL New York defender Maja Nylén Persson is one of those players, as she's not only playing for Sweden at the Women's Euro Hockey Tour, but she's expected to start the SDHL season with her former club, Brynas, until PWHL camps open in November.

Last year this tactic worked out for a number of players including Ottawa's Kateřina Mrázová and Boston's Alina Müller who hit the ground running after spending time with European clubs prior to the inaugural PWHL season. ...

Something a bit less somber, from the desk of Mr. Kennedy of THN fame ...
Offseason PWHL Power Rankings

The PWHL offseason has come to a point where teams have pretty much solidified their rosters heading to camp, staffs are almost in place, and preparations are underway for year two. Here's a look at how each PWHL team's offseason ranked.

Ian Kennedy
21 hours ago (30 August 2024)

It's hard to have a bad offseason less than a year into the existence of the league with an abundance of talent still coming in through the draft, but some PWHL teams certainly had more to do, and more to fix than others.

There were big signings from Toronto, coaching changes in New York, controversy in Minnesota, defecting draft picks in Montreal, and much more. Here's a ranking of how PWHL teams did this offseason. These rankings aren't projecting 2024-2025 on-ice success, but rather, are looking at what each team was able to do this offseason. ...

PWHL Rumblings: Team Names, National Team News, Unsigned Picks

With September here, it's time for team names and other important announcements to start flowing from the PWHL. A few top draft picks remain unsigned and perhaps at a stalemate, and more in this week's PWHL Rumblings.

7 Hours Ago (August 31, 2024)

Buckle up, with the calendar flipping from August to September, we're about to hit a wave of news. We can expect to soon be hearing about team names and logos, schedules, venues, and much more. The clock is going to start to move very quickly toward puck drop as many players from around the league are already back into international competition.

Here's what we're hearing and seeing around the league this week. ...
