Why No. 1 Overall Pick Sarah Fillier is Practising With the Boys to Prepare For Her PWHL Debut

The first overall pick in the PWHL draft headed to Power Edge Pro camp, where some of the top talents in the NHL get their skills training.

Sarah Fillier has won three world championships and an Olympic gold medal — and her pro career hasn't even begun yet. So when the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL draft was looking to push herself this summer, she went back to a familiar place: Power Edge Pro camp in Toronto.

PEP has catered to a laundry list of elite players over the years, from Connor McDavid to Connor Bedard to all three Hughes brothers. This was Fillier's third year at the camp and her second training with the NHL group. ...

There's a very long list of what I get out of this," Fillier said of PET. "Going through the PEP devices is super-valuable to me, and the pace of what we do everything at elevates my game. I have to compete with NHL guys out here." ...

How The NWSL's New Collective Bargaining Agreement Could Impact The PWHL

The NWSL re-negotiated their collective bargaining agreement less than two years after signing, and long before it was set to expire. Could the PWHL follow? Their original CBAs were remarkably similar, so the NWSL's new deal could pave the way again.

The PWHL is seven years away from the expiration of their Collective Bargaining Agreement, but the deal signed by the NWSL and NWSLPA, who have reportedly come to terms on a new CBA, could have a significant impact on the PWHL.

Why? When you look at the NWSL's now former CBA, and compare it to that of the PWHL, much of the document is almost a verbatim copy and paste.

PWHL advisory board member Billie Jean King is a part owner of Angel City FC in the NWSL, and the fingerprints of the NWSL are all over the PWHL's collective bargaining agreement. If the PWHL continues to follow the NWSL's lead, the NWSL's new collective bargaining agreement could have a future impact on the direction of the PWHL.

A Deal Could Come Earlier Than 2031

The PWHL and PWHLPA's collective bargaining agreement wasn't exactly collective, as a only a small portion of the league's players were able to have a say on the document. That in itself could provide impetus to alter the CBA. The PWHL's deal won't expire until 2031, but that doesn't mean the players won't push for change soon. ...

Another offseason player interest piece from Mr. Kennedy ...
Claire Thompson Trades One Dream Job For Another As She Returns To Hockey

Claire Thompson dreams of being a doctor, something she was well on her way to achieving. Last year she paused her hockey career for medicine. Now, she's again putting one dream job on hold for another, but this time to play hockey.

At 25-years-old, Claire Thompson had a difficult decision to make. She was living two dreams. One, that of a World Championship and Olympic gold medalist hockey player. The other, that of an aspiring doctor completing medical school.

Until 2023, those two worlds had continued in parallel, neither taking space from the other. When the PWHL was announced however, Thompson, who was enrolled at New York University following her time at Princeton, had a decision to make. It may be more accurate to say, that given the timing of the league's announcement, and the fact Thompson was already started clinical placements for medical school, the decision was made for her.

One of the top defenders in the world would not be joining her peers in the new premiere hockey league in the world for women. Thompson's hockey career was on hold. Fast forward a year to a time the decision had re-entered Thompson's control, and she's now preparing, as the 3rd overall draft pick in the 2024 PWHL Draft, to put her other dream, the one she was pursuing in medical school, on hold while she joins the PWHL in Minnesota. ...
