How has Honzek looked since he's been sent down?

Not bad to pretty good. He's not on a scoring line and doesn't play much on the PP so the 3pts in 7 games doesn't concern me, even if his one goal was into an EN IIRC. He's not super noticeable but when you watch him closely he's doing all the little things right. Forechecks well and responsible defensively. Needs to be more assertive and drive the net more with the puck but stuff like that comes with comfort I think. His next game will only be his 15th pro game.

It's Brzutewicz and Poirier that have been disappointing for me. Solo has been much better than both.

He's definitely been on the PP at some points. Cull switches stuff up often and I don't pay close enough attention to know which units are which playing which dman etc. He's been good in transition but other than that just kind of slow decision wise and gets beat outside too often. Think he's gotten used to being a team's #1 and that's no longer the case right now. Poirier is just a hot mess of a hockey player and has been damn near every game I've watched him. Great athlete, very talented, but if he doesn't learn some puck management he does not have a NHL future.

They do score a lot of goals, most in the AHL(also having played the most games).

Wranglers drop both games of a back to back with Tucson 5-3 and 6-2. Weren't terrible or anything but were outplayed in most facets by the Roadrunners, who were impressive. Their goalie Villata was really good and played both games. Some quality fwd prospects in that organization.

Not a ton to add to that really, Bishop and Solovyov were our best skaters.
The SHG Calgary are allowing are getting out of hand. Bru was scratched this one after being -2 yesterday. Honzek picked up a point. Clark Bishop was a good choice for Captain, absolutely busting his ass every shift.

Wranglers get back on track taking both road games against the Manitoba Moose this weekend. Friday 6-1 and Sunday 3-2. Parker Bell had a 2 goal game in the first one, a game Calgary dominated. Sunday's game Cooley was terrific, Moose put a lot of rubber on him. Kerins just keeps scoring goals(had one in each) and after a bit of a lull Stromgren looks like he's got it going again.

Given the Flames' massive reluctance (aka fear) of graduating defencemen, you have to wonder what the plan is with the sheer amount of bodies on defence.

Not only should they have graduated Solovyov this year, but the amount of bodies Conroy signed means it's looking no one from the farm is even going to get a chance to get a cup coffee. That's just terrible player development.

Seriously, the last defenceman they drafted and developed into a full time NHL'er for the Flames is Rasmus Andersson and he was picked in 2015....

Parekh and Brzustewicz could both steal a spot next year. Poirier and Morin are progressing well too. The rest are all longshots, some that could eventually make it but aren’t worth losing sleep over

Between 2016-2019, we picked 3 defenseman total. Valimaki, Fox, and Falkovsky. That right there already explains the long gap in producing a defenseman.

Having 6 defenseman naturally means there is a spot open, even 2 the way Calgary prefers to run a roster, and Bean isnt exactly an everyday defenseman even this year. As for the list:

Grushnikov: AHL/NHL
Kuznetsov: AHL/NHL
Brzustewicz: AHL/NHL
Poirier: AHL
Morin: AHL
Hurtig: ECHL/AHL

Solovyov makes the roster regardless because of his 1 way contract, meaning he gets paid the same either way, and his play probably dictates whether that’s as a popcorn eater or a semi regular player (he’ll be 25, at that point he’s already mostly what he’s going to be). Think we see Grushnikov (less likely), Brzustewicz (less likely), Kuznetsov (more likely) and Parekh (wildcard) battle it out for that 6D spot as well probably against a PTO and Solovyov.

So likely there you have it, 4-5 play in the AHL leaving room for a couple veterans, 1-2 on the roster if they earn it, a couple ECHLers and the list fits pretty easily.

Wranglers get some revenge this weekend on Tucson with 4-2 and 6-3 wins. Team played well, goalies were both good, Stromgren, Kerins, Morton all with very solid performances. Honzek had a great no look pass to Morton for a PP goal, looks to be getting his feet under him. Chippy games in the AHL, lots of mucking it up after whistles.

I do wonder what the plans for Poirier will be. If Jurmo proves he can play at this level, I'm not sure JP be resigned. Maybe he'll be a throw in for a later trade?

Wranglers slap around the Moose 6-1 at the Dome.
Kerins another goal and two assists, up to 17 tucks on his season. Tied for the lead in the AHL in pts and 2nd in goals. Bru starting to pick it up offensively, thought he had a nice game. Klapka and Hunt a couple pts each and Cooley nearly perfect.
Honzek had a nice breakaway goal after shrugging off a defender:


Admit I was kind of skeptical the Wranglers could keep this pace up after losing so many players off their roster but they seem to be meshing well. Lots of guys that deserve a look with the big club before this season is out. Will try to get to a game or two over the holidays here.

See no reason not to retain Poirier. I'm not his biggest fan but this is one of the better athletes we have in our system. Jurmo is not good. Could definitely see him as a trade piece down the road though.

Wranglers won again Wednesday night, 6-3 over the Moose. Improving to 19-5-1.

• Brzustewicz scored his first pro goal, and added an assist.
• Honzek scored a pair, and added an assist. Both his second goal and his assist were on empty netters. His first goal though was a nice power move going from the outside and cutting to the slot and sliding it between the wickets when he got the goalie moving.
• Bishop was 1+2, again like Honzek, 1g and 1a were on empty netters.
• Frk put up a goal and an assist... in his last 10 games he has really turned it up a notch with 5 goals and 13 points, after his first 11 games he only had 1 goal and 2 assists.
• Stromgren also continued his production with another goal tonight, he's scored in 4 straight and on a 6 game point streak. Like Frk, Stromgren had a slow start putting up just a single point in his first 8 games, he's scored points in 16 games since then.
• Ignatjew picked up a 31 save win. Despite his poor stats, he's now 5-2-1. But sample size plays a big part as he's only played 8 games and he got torched in 3 consecutive games. Hopefully him getting back to winning is a sign he's adjusting to the NA games and ice size.

Wranglers are back to #1 in the AHL both in points and PT%. They are 3rd in GA/GP at 2.52 (1st is 2.48), and they are 1st in GF/GP at 3.92 (2nd place is 3.85). Their PP is 4th at 22.2% and their PK is 5th at 86.0%. Kerins leads the league in points (it is prudent to realize that Hinostroza has 1 fewer point in 5 fewer games)... they have 3 forwards in the top 20 in scoring, and 6 in the top 40. Frk is 1 point behind the group of guys tied for 50th.

Personally I think the player is cursed to not amount to much but that’s my two cents. He screams “not talented enough for a top 6, doesn’t have the well rounded game for bottom 6”. Guy has produced everywhere he’s went, and he’s also in the coaches doghouse everywhere he’s went.

Would love to be wrong, and I think we have plenty of exciting prospects on the Wranglers (looking at Stromgren, Honzek, Brzustewicz, and Kuznetsov), but I find myself struggling to have much hopes for Kerins.

Rory Kerins is tied for the AHL lead in scoring (28 points) and is second in goals (17). And he's all of 22.

He deserves a call up period but especially given the Flames' anemic offense.

And it seems like it should happen sooner than later but who knows

To my understanding his skating is a legit concern long term, but always happy to at least have some breakouts from prospects, especially later picks.

Kid had just 3 points in 9 games to start the year, including a 7-game pointless streak. He is currently on a 14-game point streak and has points in 19 of his last 20 games. He's now up to 43 points, meaning he's been averaging 2-points per game since his extended pointless streak ended.

Flames might not have any superstar elite level prospects, but when was the last the time prospect pool looked this good? I'm only statwatching, but with guys like Suniev, Misa, Battaglia, Flames seem to have made some good picks. And then there's Parekh and Gridin, and Kerins is looking good in AHL, and Strömgren is getting better. Bru getting used to AHL level play lately
