Speculation: 2024-25 Playoffs Thread - series, opponents, players and team discussion

Any forward who is playing on PP and not on PK is likely to be a minus with abnormal amount of on-ice empty-net goals against and poor on-ice goaltending. + - is not a good proxy for overall 5-on-5 play

+ / - is relative to the rest of the team. The Panthers are one of the best defensive teams in the NHL ....

To your second point about ice time delegation, that ***might*** skew his +/- to a small extent. In this case he is -19 while playing top 6 minutes in general. Zero excuse about delegation there..

blud got his extension and said im retiring

Thank god our depth scoring is better than last year. I wont bad mouth CV too much for what hes done but man what a "down" year for him, but hes shooting less than half of what he was the previous years.
Reinharts 57 goals was an aberration but hes still at 35 which is dang good.

Yeah I guess the shooting percentage will average out at some point, I'm more shocked about the -19 part.

Has anyone noticed Barkov's PPG has gone down every year since 2021-22? 1.31, 1.15, 1.10 and now this year, 1.05.

This is also the first time in his entire career that he's recorded more giveaways than takeaways (32/47)

Also a -1, which hasn't happened since the team was good.

Bit disappointing after his hot start to the season. Ah well, make up for it with a dominant playoff run.

I mean everyone is essentially having a down year. Think they’re just tired tbh. They’re obviously conserving energy.

He is at "0" 5-on-5 with nearly 56% xG.

Transition from Q/Brunnette system to Maurice system + league overall decline in scoring

This doesn't say much without any context.

3-17 with own empty net.

Barkov is completely fine.

Not understanding several things. So I see that he’s on the ice often when the net is empty and therefore this brings his +\- down but would that be the case for most/all goal scoring players?

Second, I don’t see where is a “0” at 5 on 5 play.

Third, what is 56% xG referring to?

Even taking into account scoring environment, his PPG ranking has gone down every season. Even outside of the 2021-22 season playing under Brunette.

2024-25 28th in PPG
2023-24 23rd in PPG
2022-23 18th in PPG
2021-22 10th in PPG

Im not worried about him per se, it's a pretty miniscule drop after all (at least after 2021), but it is a pattern nonetheless.

Also i'm not sure what more additional context would be needed for the giveaway/takeaway stat. He's not playing under a different system, deployed differently, or any of that. Even then, he's consistently had a positive takeaway/giveaway ratio throughout his career regardless of context. Again, I just thought it was interesting since it's a first in his career.

If you take into account minutes played per game, Barkov is averaging the following points per minute played:

2024-25: 0.051
2023-24: 0.056
2022-23: 0.054
2021-22: 0.064

2021-22 was best point production wise but this year he sure seems to be saving it for the playoffs and there are other scorers on the team and he had a slow start to the season point production wise.

Not sure there’s anything in the stats to worry about.

I know for damn sure I ain’t seeing Barkov talk in this thread without even a slightest mention of Tkachuk who’s been on a down trend since year 1 both regular season and playoffs (so far)

Meanwhile, this is Verhaeghe’s actual first poor season with us

Expecting Tkachuk to repeat 2022 was always going to lead to disappointment. Id say the last 2 seasons is what should be expected going forward.

I mean, he's still very much above a PPG when he only had 1 season like that in Calgary

At this point, just get in and best case, split the first two in the first round. I feel that A3 or WC1 is what we're looking at. Barring a hot streak to finish and total collapse by either Toronto or Tampa

With his sternum injury it was expected, he got back to form last year around january until he got double crunched vs carolina later and kinda never got back to it

Tampa scares me due to their ability to score at will. They blew out Pittsburgh after the Panthers barely eeked out a SO win. They blew out Utah and we needed OT magic and only Bennett to beat them.

Outside of Reinhart, Bennett and Barkov, everyone else just seems snakebit. I fear that they will be out very quickly this year

doesnt tampa know they should be sucking ass cheeks right now and not winning?

Also same with last year, not sure why were playin bob so much when our effort isnt there.
Not to say go 50-50 on starts but i mean why not give that guy a break?

It's not just Tampa. We're struggling to score against teams that are getting blown out by teams not the Panthers.

Glass half full is that basically 3 more wins will clinch a playoff spot. Let's just hope any woes can stop by then.

tbh though, most of the time when a team gets blown out they try to step it up for the next game, and vice versa
Rarely do teams have a back to back blowouts

I think our top 6 besides benny and reino are struggling to score and our depth scoring that was keeping us afloat has dropped off too.

Ill wait and see but i remember goin thru this worry last year, but at least last year we went on such a tear that that drop we had in march just lost us the presidents trophy, now looks like we wont win the division

I’m thinking Maurice is having the players shift into playoffs mode by turning up the defense and focus on puck possession. Or it’s just copium lol
