“Maybe we knew this random guy will continue scoring at a higher equivalency rate in the AHL than he ever did in his previous AHL season or the ECHL or QMJHL” is an outstanding summation of who the Flyers are and what the defense of their processes look like.

Oh come on, we're talking a two way deal. If you've watched the Phantoms, Gaucher is clearly better than Gardner or Abols. At worst he'll be a key player on LHV, providing stability as they cycle through prospects the next few years.
And it's not like they committed to him until now, they let him work his way up from the ECHL to a bottom six AHL to a top six AHL role before they gave him that contract.
Low cost, no risk move.

Signing the contract was fine.
The only thing I objected to was the idea that anyone could reasonably predict this kind of scoring and/or using it as evidence of a sound process. But now I also object to the “at worst he’ll be a key player on LHV” take. Because we have to get carried away with everything for some reason. He could turn back into a pumpkin at any point. You won’t hear me hold that against them if he does.

You can say that for virtually any player, all it takes is one injury . . .
Now the harder call is whether a player is progressing or it's just an outlier season, b/c they generally look the same, especially over SSS.
I didn't take Gaucher seriously earlier in the season, but the last two games I saw, the Gaucher line with Lycksell and Wisdom passed the eyeball test. In the AHL, my basic test is if I watch a game, does the player look like one of the best players on the ice. If I have to look for his number, meh.
Of course, if you could predict the small number of marginal prospects who will turn out to be late bloomers, they'd get drafted much higher.

Desnoyers is a disappointment, seems to have faded into the boards.
Tuomaala can score, but -17 is so far worse than his teammates that you just can't blame goalies. I see another AHL season in his future as he learns how to play.

4th rd - 13%
5th onward - 10%
200 games is an end of the roster player, guy who starts for a year or two or plays part-time, then hangs around the league for a few more years, often bouncing between the NHL and AHL.
4th line/6th D-man types at best.
So if you're talking about development failures, it's really the 1st and 2nd rd picks who showed promise in their D+1/D+2 seasons or in college, then failed to develop once they became pros.
