Got hurt on the last shift. Can’t believe we spent a second round pick on that.

Cliff notes?

Does he still play like a defenseman?

Zavragin is having an historic KHL season for a U20 goalie.
We'll see if he keeps it up, but if he does, it's a better season than Shesterkin, Sorokin or Bob at 19.
Vasilevskiy is the only one with a similar KHL performance at 19 years old.
28g .923 Sv5, PO 18g .934.
So far this season:
19g .930

Well, I'm not going to take anything away from Zavragin's excellent performance, BUT...regarding Shesterkin and Sorokin, in those years, the KHL was a bit stronger. More top-level Russian players, more good-quality European foreigners...
Vasilevsky's performance to me was more valuable than Zavragin's - he had a worse team (not a bad team at all, but not as stacked as SKA), and most importantly, he played lights out in the playoffs, not (only) in the regular season.
So, it's early to make comparisons, although, Zavragin is having a hell of a season, that's for sure, and he has NHL potential all over him.

Also, part of what makes a goalie valuable is stamina, the difference between a franchise goalie and a 1A.

Now at 19, he's not going to be physically mature, still, how he finishes the season will give a clue to his future potential - if he can maintain this level of play over 40-50 starts he could be something special.

And the POs are always a good test, better opponents, more pressure.

Any updated opinions on Cole Knuble? Seems to be having a good year. Still projected to be a winger or is there center hope?

The great (~60% CF/xGF): Lycksell -
he was solid in his cameo, only issue is skating. 40 shots, 0 goals, needs some puck luck.

The very good (~55+): Desnoyers, Samson, Ginning
Ginning you'd expect give his age, good sign for Desnoyers, Samson is only 21, August B-day.

The good (~52+): Andrae, Grans.
Grans is still only 22. Maybe he can still be salvaged?

"Fine" (~49-51): Tuomaala, Abols.
Tuomaala has 1 point in 9 games at ES.

Below avg (~45-48): McDonald, Wisdom, Richard.
McDonald is +4 when every other D-man is negative, SSS fluke?

Bad (<45): Avon, Gendron, Eklind.
Disappointing by Avon, only 21, but with his size and speed, hoping he can be an excellent forechecker, should be showing more.

No Gaucher? Dark horse but off to a good start.
But he's 23, so it's close to "do or die."
It is possible to have a update on those stats or where can we find those?

Watched the game last night, wasn't much to watch.
Phantoms were sloppy in the 1st period, 4 odd man rushes against them, but would have been competitive with a real goalie, Peterson was that bad.
Down 3-1, they had almost killed off a 5 on 3 PP when Peterson allowed a bad angle goal to make it 4-1.

Tuomaala is sort of a mini-Tippett, skates, shoots but is a bit clueless. Needs work.

Grans has picked up where he left off, will be back up at some point.

Lycksell is a very good AHL plus player, but not sure he's more than a 4th line NHL player, just lacks any special feature.

Samson is the reason you invest in your AHL team, only 21 (late B-day) late round pick, has enough skill to make it but needs a lot of work. But another year in the AHL and who knows?

MacDonald is big, mobile and physical, and doesn't handle the puck like a live grenade. However, his role in the NHL will require polish, he's going to be a defense first guy so he won't have a big margin for error. Check back in April.

Gaucher probably doesn't have NHL talent, but he keeps showing up when you watch.

Matteo Mann had a goal and assist last night and is sitting on 10 points in 23 GP for Saint John. His career high is 13 points.

I'm curious to see him next year in the AHL, guys that big often take a year or two longer to develop b/c they have to develop body control.

Size is a "skill," but you need to be functionally mobile and able to handle the puck. One problem with Morin, other than his knees, was that he wasn't a good puck handler or making passes out of the D-zone. So scoring with Mann at lower levels is less about his offensive potential than a sign that he's not totally useless with the puck on his stick.

Like McDonald, his path to the NHL is as a big mobile defensive D-man who can clear the porch, win board battles, and make that first pass out of the D-zone and not get stripped of the puck on a regular basis by forecheckers. A good shot from the point, a la Gudas, would help.

The odds are stacked against Mann, but this is the right way to use late round picks, gamble on outliers rather than mediocre versions of better players.
