2024/25 Oilers Prospect Thread

Thanks for the link confirming this from a verified, trusted source. Interesting signing, produced decently well in his final season. Not expecting much from any of the new signings, to be honest -- there's a reason they were all passed over. But hoping for an extremely rare win here, this prospect pool is abysmal and they could really use an up arrow and injection of youthful skill in short order, on the NHL roster. Wonder if the kid is eligible for the playoffs or not, given the stuffed infirmary here.
The wins are less rare than one might think. In numbers and impact undrafted players compare favorably with third rounders. Over 10% of the current NHL players were undrafted. Now that does not mean that the probability of success with a generic undrafted player is the same as a generic third since the relative probabilities depend on the actual number of undrafted players signed. But I would suspect that the more high profile ones might be comparable to late second rounders on average. For a team that has been using its draft capital in trades this is a good strategy.

I mean, it's essentially the only strategy available to them. They don't have a pick until the third round for this year's draft I believe, someone please correct that if I'm wrong, and then two late round picks in 5-7 range. They have spent their draft pick capital chasing vets at premium price or in some cases giving them away for poor, or very little in return. How many 'high profile' FAs from college or Europe have chosen here?

As far as success goes, you may find some serviceable bottom 6 guys. But that is also relative, as this front office has been staffed by people producing poor / mediocre results in terms of overturning stones and beating every bush in order to make up for having few picks (and certainly few high draft picks of late). Their draft and development pedigree shows a pitifully low amount of decent NHL players, and the few hits they have had in later rounds, sometimes have been gifted to other teams and have found success. I have no faith in this group, though I was hoping for a turnaround with the hiring of Kalle Larsson and even that really.. uh opinionated stats guy, Parkatti. Just not seeing the 'best in class' empty platitudes spouted by Jackson resulting in anything concrete, whatsoever. *edit* Just checking the front office page now, and Bob 'Griffin Reinhart' Green is **still** chief amateur scout. They have Kassian doing pro scouting for them too. Just does not seem like an organization serious about this aspect in particular.

Agreed that it is pretty much the only strategy available to them.

The bottom line though is that with 32 teams in the league even most teams in the last few spots of the first will be lucky to get more than a decent bottom six guy out of the draft. The other aspect of this is that with the Oiler's cap space opening up having some really cheap home grown bottom sixers may actually allow them to add some higher end talent via free agency.

The Oilers have not had a great record in development so perhaps getting guys further along may even help. If they can get Berezkin signed they have an even better chance of someone beating the odds and contributing soon.

Beauty pass by Akey.

Another angle and a secondary assist from Wakely in the second video.

You see a move like that by Akey and wonder why he hasn't put up more points.
That's how I saw him in the rookie tournaments and in preseason those few games he played. I know he's not known for his offense but the skills are there to be a decent point producer in the NHL.

Much like Kesselring, I've been high on him for a long time. Hopefully we sign him and he becomes a long term top 6 option for us.
I am still choked about the Oilers throwing Kesselring into the Bjugstad trade. This will be controversial but it was in my opinion a bigger mistake than the loss of Broberg. That's not to say that Kesselring will be the better player but Broberg sort of forced the decision. Kesselring was just tossed in for no reason.

I watched about 10 minutes of the London game. O'Reilly is very impressive. It would not surprise me if he was an Oiler regular by 2026-27.
I think he’ll get into games next year. Probably won’t stick but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he gets his 9. As much as the deal to get him was a risk, the payoff is looking good so far.

Much like just randomly deciding not to sign Blumel, trading Kesselring was another confounding decision by Holland.

We can’t say it was because Kesselring refused to sign. He was already signed.

It feels like Holland chose Desharnais over Kesselring.

I do wonder how much of that was on Woodcroft's word though.

What do you feel holds him back from being a NHLer next year in your opinion?

In terms of his game, not much. I think he could easily compete for the #4C slot. But they probably want more from him and I suspect that he will be given a chance to grow more before they throw him in.

He just turned 19 so he is still very young. I suspect that he plays a big role in London next year but I don't think he will have a lot of time in the AHL before making the jump if he continues to improve his whole game.

Windsor has been on a roll and looks like they will take out the Rangers unfortunately. I would have loved to see a London/Kitchener Conference final. But right now I'd be surprised if London is not in the Memorial Cup so everyone would then get a chance to watch the kid. He's not overly dynamic so that may make people question his upside, but he plays in every situation and just seems to get the job done. There is a reason that he ended up third in the OHL at +56. He is also a terrific penalty killer and was second in the OHL for most SH points with 2 SHG and 5 SHA behind only Sam Dickinson. If I had to pick an Oiler he reminds me of it is probably Nuge. That may disappoint some but for me it is a complement.

Thanks for the info!

Do you think he’ll make the WJHC team next year?

With Draisaitl and (likely) McDavid signed long term, a defensively responsible 3C would be welcome. Nuge can go back to wing.
