The Flint Firebirds opened their season against an undermanned London Knights squad last night. They will continue their home-and-home series with a date in Flint tonight.

Nathan Day picked up the opening night victory on the road with a 7-4 Flint win over London.

Connor Clattenburg was named the captain prior to the game. He is centering the top line. He recorded two assists, the first of which was unremarkable (but is the first goal on the highlight pack if you must see it) and the second a pass on a 2-on-1 which can be viewed at the 1:50 mark in the highlights here:

William Nicholl centered a second line and notched 2 goals and an assist, all on the power play.

I really feel like both of these guys have NHL potential. Clattenburg is not just a goon. I find it interesting that they have him at center. Nicholl's 2nd goal was a thing of beauty. He could be a big time steal.

Joel Maata named co-captain of the flaccid U Vermont team (alongside an Edmonton guy): 2024-25 Leadership Group Announced for Men’s Hockey - University of Vermont Athletics

Joel has become a great two-way center within Hockey East over the last few years," stated Wiedler. "His ability to play in every situation speaks to his mentality and leadership as a three-year letter wearer for us. For our coaching staff up a goal, down a goal, or tied late in a game it is a no brainer to put #9 on the ice for the Catamounts."

EDIT: Speaking of which four years in a moribund program can age a poor guy... (view Historical tab in his profile) ;)

Picking players from U Vermont because Woodcroft's brother coaches there couldn't be any more of a classic dumbass Oiler Management tactic that hopefully is now in the dust bin.

"Draft that guy, Woody's brother can keep an eye on him!" would have likely been a wise strategy before the advent of mass travel, video and the internet, but now it's possible to keep tabs on players remotely regardless of where they play and no matter who's brother is coaching the team.

Funny and true. I'm just the messenger! That said, he's a 7th round pick who had multiple years of national level team experience, a centre with size and some face-off abilities. U Vermont seems where hockey dreams go to die ... including Woodcroft the Elder's.

Wakely still not playing for North Bay? Heard they were going to deal him because they have too many 20 year olds. If I were the Oilers I would give them until Bakersfield camp opens and if they dont trade him then they sign him and play him in Fort Wayne.

Keep him in the OHL to save a year of his ELC. He's a longer term project anyway.

Can’t they sign him to an AHL deal
He has a year to earn that NHL ELC. He'll have a better chance doing that if he's one of the better players in the OHL on a competitive team.

Odds are he's looking for a trade to a contender.
