Passan with an interesting trade idea for the Cardinals:
Read somewhere if Arenado agrees to move that Jays would be interested. If they took on most of his salary if not all adding Helsley wouldn't cost too much at all either. I believe he's owed 69 million over the next 3 years after the Rockies 5 million contribution.

Helsley would be dope and though Arenado wouldn't be the hitter he was he'd still be league average with rock solid D.

For someone smarter than me, I looked at Arenado's contract and a lot of it is deferred money. Would the jays be on the hook for it if they acquire him?

If the Cards were willing to give Arenado for free, i wouldnt take him. Huge decline in results and his statcast page is very blue. 2.5 WAR 3B owed $27M, $22M and $15M. Clement put up 4.5 WAR in 504 PAs with the Jays for near league minimum.

Cards got to take on money, give us a sweetener or take back Springer.

Unless Springer goes the other way it makes no sense for sure. But then we potentially get a longer contract for a declining player.

So we saved about $9.7M non tendering Romano and Tate.

That’s enough to add one legit arm to the pen.

If all the rumours are true, looking to add a top starter and at least one big bat, we’ll need to move one of or both Bassitt and Springer. That’s $47M + $9.7 from the non tenders. Even moderate assumptions are we had an extra $30M in the budget. That’s $86.9M to spend. SP - $30M, big bat - $25M, leaving $30M towards BP + another bat potentially.

The best route may be to add a bounce back candidate like Louis Robert or someone like Brandon Lowe (last year of arb). I think both are in the low teens and given they are a year from FA may be available at a somewhat reasonable cost.

Sorry for the rambling, lots of possibilities how this plays out, should be interesting. Sadly, will probably take months before it all unfolds.

Hearing they got a last minute deal done with Swanson to avoid arbitration. Hopefully it saved us a few dollars.

Banking on Chad Green, Romano didn't play much last year, so he wasn't part of the 10 hidden wins obviously. I always liked Jordan Hicks more tbh, it's too bad he wanted to try and be a starter because that obviously didn't work, maybe Jays can get him back cheap with San Fran retaining a good chunk of his contract to move him.

Not concerned about the non tender for Romano. Still a chance they sign him they just don’t have to give him that much. He’s not a 10 million dollar arm.
