Well that sucks

Pete Alonso is headed back to the Mets, reportsAndy Martino of SNY. It’s a two-year deal that includes an opt-out after next season, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Alonso will make $30MM next season, Passan adds. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that Alonso is guaranteed $54MM and receives a $10MM signing bonus.

At that price he wanted the Mets and only the Mets.

Guaranteed last place in the division without at least one more bat..

At the very least now they have to back up the Brinks truck for Bregman.

Eh... maybe other teams didn't want to give him that first year opt out? It's basically $30 million for one year (plus a $24 million contingency plan in case he gets hurt or something), then he hits the open market again with no QO.

Mad Max gonna drill this backstabber first time he faces him.

I’m with @phillipmike , Moncada makes good sense as another bat option. Switch hitter with a lot to prove.

The prospect fan in me is happy we get to see a battle for those at bats.

It’s a big L contract for Alonso and his agent. Guess he really wanted to stay in NY despite the fact they didn’t want to commit to him long term.

I won’t be losing any sleep over this!

I don't really blame Alonso. He thinks he's worth a deal like 5 years 125 million or something so in his mind he's almost certainly going to opt out so for him this contract and any other contract he was offered was a 1 year 30 million dollar contract with some insurance years in case things really go south. We were probably offering something like 3 years structured 30, 25, 25 with a opt out after year 1. While that's better than 2 years 54 million, or 3 years 71 million which were the 2 Mets offers all 3 offers likely were first year 30 ish million and an opt out. Does it make sense to leave New York for Toronto for the same 1 year payday and probably have to DH a bunch just for a little bit more money in extra insurance years when he's probably 95% chance to opt out? Probably not.

Sucks for us because we need another bat, and Alonso is pretty much all bat, and I'm scared of any Bregman contract. At least the DH spot will be open if one of Wagner, Orelvis, or Roden mashes the cover off the ball. Though, DH would have been a fine spot for Horwitz too... That deal only makes sense to me if you couldn't do that.
