2024-25 Kraken Roster discussion

I dunno, I’ve really been paying attention to McCann this season, what with the joking that first month that he’s their best player. Honestly I’m kinda underwhelmed.

He doesn’t seem to have that “sniper” mentality guys like Ovechkin, Hull, Laine, Josh Norris seem to have. He seems to actively seek out durdling around at the blueline on the PP and getting his shot blocked. I’ve never seen him rip a one timer (even just to get saved) on a seam pass. He plays a really weird game for a guy with his caliber of a shot.

I’ve wondered more than once if he’s playing hurt. Not injured per se, but with something impeding his shot. It just doesn’t make sense how often he elects to not use it. Your choice of “weird” as an adjective to describe his game is apt.

I don't recall having this issue with McCann before this year. It could be confidence or injury or both.

Yeah I’ve waffled back and forth on the injury thing too. A month or two ago he took a pass on the faceoff dot, mistiming the one-timer so badly he broke his stick. It was honestly kind of jarring, like it’s not something he works on.

I’d empty the Brinks for Marner. Doubt that happens however.
Why? He's a small soft winger who is good defensively and great offensively but he isn't great in the playoffs and is going to look for 12-14m+ and be one of the most expensive paid players in the NHL. I'd love him at a reasonable price but there's no way he goes for anything reasonable.

What are the thoughts on Gourde at this time? I don't think he will be ready before the TDL which is going to make it challenging to trade him and probably impact the return a lot.

I don't know why they waited so long to decide he needed surgery. Kind of miffed that we may miss out on a good chance to stock up on picks/prospects.

I guess that's the Francis way....

Guess so. I am just waiting for him to re-sign Gourde citing leadership, effort, blah blah blah.

There are some rumors about Francis being open to trade vets like Bjorkstrand, Oleksiak and Schwartz. If we can move 2 of those 3, it could help a bit.

I think Gourde still has value, but nowhere near at what he's making now. He'll get paid better than I hope the Kraken would resign him for, but frankly, I'd rather a younger guy get that shot.

I'd LOVE to see Rig get moved at the TDL. Schwartz has been good enough that I'd really hope he'd fetch something decent.

I'm never ok with moving Bjorkstrand now that he's a Kraken, because he's my favorite NHL player, but I get it if they take that opportunity now.

I would rank my preference in trading the 3 in the same order. Oleksiak > Schwartz > Bjorkstrand. Though, I get a feeling the it is more likely Bjorkstrand gets moved over Schwartz. Agree on Oleksiak. Just use Fleury till the end of the season and then decide how to fill in the blue line.

I’m mildly curious what will happen to Kartye in the offseason. If im reading it right his QO is reasonable but he’s arbitration eligible? He’s been pretty invisible this season even for a 4th liner. It wouldn’t super shock me if they let him walk?

Dude's got two cups and you can't have enough cups in the dressing room.
He'll probably get a four year deal at around $4M per season. :scared:

Well, I wouldn't mind trading either one of them.
Bjorkstrand might even fetch something nice but I'm not sure who touches the Schwartz contract. Even with him having a good season.

Yeah, moving Oleksiak would be a good idea.
His value probably won't ever be higher given that a team trading for him gets two playoff runs with him while he's still playing at a solid rate.

BTW: Do we give Stezka a start at some point or will Joey start 65 and will be run into the ground during a lost season like this one?

They got to start Stezka. This is Joey's first full season and is a lost season at that. Give Stezka a start and go from there.

My goodness. This is both sad and hilarious. I actually got cut over the phone by our captain’s mother two games into a season where they won one game out of 30. He had told her they’d do better with a different goalie, but didn’t want to tell me so. She found his roster sheet and called me.
True story.
He folded the team after that one season.

Hold on. How old was the captain? I mean, that seems very out of the ordinary for me unless you played in this league when you were all kids.

He was 26 at the time. He spent the whole season (I ended up on another team) complaining about the reffing. Just a whiny little cherry picker who could’ve been a dominant player if he’d had a better attitude. He stacked his team with all his friends, which is fine, but none of them were natural D-men. It was bizarre. I guess he thought we’d win every game 11-10.

That's a little old for having his mother call his teammates? But I guess if blaming people and not taking responsibility was his style, then he may have got that from his mom.

Wow, that's just nuts.

In beer league, I found out at the last minute that I was the "replacer" in a situation like that, and I knew the goalie I was replacing. So I told the captain that I couldn't do it. I'm still not sure what they did for that first game (I did give 24 hours' notice).
