Ok, Nill. Here's your big game to hunt.

Zero chance he's traded mid-season. Zero chance they move him over Miller too

Isn't this the same guy who reported that Heiskanen was on the table for Karlsson or something way back in the Dallas-Ottawa Erik Karlsson rumor says

I can see some truth in that. The offers for miller are garbage. They will get more for Pettersson. They would also be crazy to move the younger guy and keep the locker room issue.

I don’t think Dallas has the pieces to pull a Pattersson trade. Or at least not the ones they would be willing to give up.

It would be a Robertson/Pettersson swap.

Also, the Canucks might be having a bit of contract regret with Pettersson given him not living up to the massive money. I can understand them preferring not to trade him because if his game does come back around, a 100 point center is among the most valuable things in the NHL, but if they have to move one of the two, Pettersson having no trade protection might also make it possible for them to generate a real bidding war to get real return.

It does appear that there won't be any movement for the Stars till after the 4 nations.

Interesting comment about only being in the market for UFAs. Definitely spooked about coming years cap issues.

A touch surprising given the coming increases to the Cap.

I really hope Nill was just bullshitting to AJ and he’s looking at better options.

I don't know what to make of it honestly. I could see him just feeding them BS since he doesn't usually share information like that.

On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's thinking smaller. Does seem a bit odd though to only go after UFAs, like is he completely ruling out signing these UFAs if they work out? Does he want to just burn more assets if we don't win the Cup this season? Are they planning for free agency already after the disaster that was this past summer?

If Robertson/Johnston still weren't performing then maybe he would've gone big game hunting, but now I could see us getting the textbook "Marchment & Seguin are our deadline additions". And maybe another middle 6 forward, bottom 6 forward, and depth dman to go with them at most. It's also possible he's waiting for more clarity on Seguin's timeline.

I would also suspect that guys like Brock Nelson are not gonna come cheap this year. Not many good options out there

Damn, at first I was glad to see Rantanen out of Colorado but the more I’ve processed it I think the Avs win that deal.

Necas is younger, cheaper (have him next season) and if he clicks I believe he’ll resign there cheaper than Rantanen of course. He’s also now on a more offensive style team and playing with Mackinnon and Makar.

Avs also picked up more assets/cap space to make another big move this season.

The Western Conference is tough.

One thing I keep forgetting thats important is that Jim Nill is a f***ing liar when it comes to the media lmfao. He might be working on a player nobody knows is available.

I don't see Nill as a liar. I can't think of a time where he told the media his intentions and did something different.

But what he did here is very rare. He almost never gives this kind of info. Usually, he says nothing.

He uses mostly boilerplate PR speak anyway so yeah hard to track when/if he's been misleading about something.

Only thing off the top of my head i can think of was Seguin's contract renewal. During the summer Nill said one thing and then Seguin came out saying he's disappointed there's been no talks which contradicted what Jim said. Anecdotal and it's been awhile so maybe im missing something but its what sticks out in my mind.

Necas is having a good year, but isn't in Rantanens class.

At the moment the Avs are worse...but, like you said they do have cap room. So if they use that cap space to add more players to be a more complete team, then yeh can see them still being a key contender after this.

No they are actually much better and you are going to see it. Necas RN is superior player, he has 9 points less while getting 4 minutes per game less than Rantannen and he is playing with Kotkaniemi, so he is sole creator on that line. Rantanen can´t even sniff Necas´s butt right now. They could even put him with Mittelstadt who is massive upgrade over Kotkaniemi and see him produce 90+points easily. Avs are going to terrorize whole central division.
