never can 'load up' and guarantee a cup. better bet is to stay competitive and give yourself a chance every year. plus the regular season is way more fun for a team in the hunt than a team tanking
yup... people don't like to confront how much of the end result is sheer f***ing luck and then narratives are crafted to explain the outcomes post facto. You just put your name in the hopper every year and give yourself a chance.

Exactly, and this is a lot of why I think Nill has done such an incredible job with the team over his tenure. We've been a legit contender more often than not under his guidance.

That's just hockey forums. There are Chicago fans who think the team was a failure in the early 2010s because they didn't win more Cups and made some bad trades.

Much of the luck is about surviving playoff injuries to your best players.

But I think it's also not a good approach to view just getting into the playoffs as the only necessary component to winning a Cup. The Stars are pretty much guaranteed to make the playoffs and have been playing better, but they're still dealing with some gaps in the roster like with their three rookie forwards producing only three points each the last ten games (despite Bourque looking better).

I know no one wants to trade anyone who is young because it's always hoped every young guy will be awesome in the future, but there are a lot of elements on the roster that make this season (and the prior two seasons) look like this team's best chances to win it all in addition to the gift of the Seguin LTIR windfall.

Habs game is the second of a back to back for them, good chance to keep rolling unless we go Full Stars tomorrow night

Maybe we should get Pastrnak in here sooner than later? :sarcasm:
Nill would win GM of year again if he pulled that off. Pasta would dramatically improve the PP and offense.

I can’t see them trading him. They could trade Marchand though and he would be a decent addition.

ha, yea i dont see either of them.. I'm just spitting nonsense :D
id rather get another capable D but I'm not holding my breath

I don’t know what Marchand would take but I’d be all over it

Dadonov is such a fun guy to watch 35% of the time. When he makes a play, it's so often very smart or very skilled. It leaves you wanting more, but he has a league-mandated governor on his production. He's going to give you what he's going to give you no more no less and no matter how much you play him or who you play him with.

With Calgary and Ottawa both firmly in a playoff hunt, it's probably safe to cross them off the list of trade partners.

Vancouver remains in the hunt but also has the two guys who need to be separated, so they probably still need to move one even if they're in the playoff mix.

Hopefully, the Boston drama is real to open them up to being a team wanting to change things up.

The Rangers have fully imploded and should be sellers soon. They're also run by an idiot, so they may be the idea trade partner.
