if we’re going to make a big splash, then Tage Thompson should be the target IMO. He’s exactly what we need. One of the few players I’d pay premium assets for. They would want one of our young centers obviously
If not, then just stay the course. Keep the young guys. Maybe move one more young dman for a scoring forward and drop the puck in October
The pipe dreams of bringing Rantanen and Marner here via free agency are pretty funny to read honestly. If we want to acquire a superstar, it’s going to have to come through a trade, and we’re going to have to part with a Zegras/McTavish/Carlssom/Sennecke level asset. Just how it goes

If we can make a splash before Free Agency opens, maybe seeing the team improve will be more appealing to possible free agents as well.

Curious, In what way? Rantanen would have to decide to play here over various destinations.
I’m not saying we’d pay what Buffalo wants but the ducks could theoretically get Thompson for assets. Unless they’ve said he’s off the table

In the sense that Rantanen would be a free agent which makes him actually available. With Thompson, he’s an incredible young player who seems to be the clear offensive centerpiece of his team‘s rebuild, and that team hasn’t really given any indication they’d want to move on from him. Unless a guy like that becomes available, you have to assume they’re not.
Doesn’t make Buffalo any more likely to trade him.

No big fish free agent is coming here and the only way to get one is through trade

Assuming the team will be picking in the 5-9 range in a weak draft, what stud do you think another team will give up to acquire that pick? I don't see that pick getting the type of player you are hoping to get.
I don't have anybody particular in mind, so I believe you're making assumptions of what type of player "stud" refers to. I think we can easily acquire a top 6 forward with a top 7 pick.

You specifically said that the pick should be in play to "acquire a stud". A "stud" to me is a pretty darned good player...a Troy Terry type perhaps. So would you trade Troy Terry for the 7th pick in this year's draft?

Looking at UFA’s and RFA’s … the jets have some decisions to make with Ehlers and Pionk as UFA’s but they probably going all in. Jack Quinn makes the only real sense. Lottery protected this year and next (McKenna) ? Would you make that trade ? Would Buffalo ?

Yes there's little sense in daydreaming about signing a prime age star. The cap going up means even some playoff teams are going to be buyers.
Better opportunity will be to look for teams trading a good player to clear cap space for pursuing said free agent stars.
And of course, nothing we do will matter much until several young guys take a big step forward. One top 6 forward won't save the rebuild if, say, Carlsson, Zegras, and McT all sputter.
Great questions and I have no idea what the answers are. But with the lottery protections you stipulated, you are basically talking about a 2027 1st which probably isn't too appealing for a team like Buffalo who is sick of losing right now. I think Buffalo says no.
It does point out, however, that it isn't easy to acquire a "stud" (or even a desirable top 6F) for a 7OA pick in a weak draft. The draft pick is almost certainly going to be a worse player than the current player you are trading away.

Either way top 6 talent tough to come by via trade. If Toronto can’t re-resign marner maybe they flip him, but not for a pick.
Top 3 makes it a bit more appealing but reading the Buffalo board off and on, the very last thing they want is another draft pick that won't be ready for another 3-4 years.
You are correct on Marner. Look what Rantanen just went for as a pending UFA...one of the top scorers in the league and a serviceable bottom six player and a 2nd. And that was without any guarantee that Rantanen stays with Carolina. Marner would be worth less than that but not that much less. A 1st wouldn't cut it IMO.
