Speculation: 2024-25 - Free Agency/Trade Thread

I haven’t listened yet, but this is interesting. Gibson has been fantastic recently.

Gibson to Philly would be hilarious. He goes on a cold streak, fans are freaking out and cussing him out, he just rolls his eye with that look he always has.

I don't disagree. My point was that the likelihood of them signing here is probably low. I don't want another situation like last summer where top UFAs sign elsewhere and the Ducks are left empty-handed.
Those are the legit top liners. If they miss out on them there are Boeser and Ehlers as options. But I wouldnt want to give them what they will get in UFA.

I wonder if farabee would be available? He's making $5 million a year for a few more years, only six goals and 14 points in 42 games after scoring 22 goals and 50 points last season. Maybe a buy-low candidate?

Bit of a risk, but that's kind of where we are at when trying to upgrade our forward talent. No sure-thing guys are going to be available at prices we should be paying, and farabee is only 24.

Couple of things with the salary retention... hopefully this is the last year as sellers so those spots won't mean much. Also, assuming they did retain on a Gibson deal, the only players that are UFA after next season that have larger contracts are Gudas and Trouba. Ducks will probably keep one or both so at most only 1 retention spot is needed next year. After that, the Fowler hit drops and were hopefully a playoff team by then anyways.

Could be an idea.

I’m cool swapping Gibson for forward help over picks if it makes sense.

The fact that we don't have a 2025 2nd (Philly has it) leads me to believe we would target something in that range (either for Gibson, Dumoulin, or someone else). At the moment, we have the #8 pick, then our next one isn't until the 70s. I think it would be beneficial to target a pick in the late 1st or early 2nd to bridge that gap.
We have done well to trade our 2025 picks since this coming draft is crap

The Avs are trying to extend Rantanen. If the Avs cannot get the extension, then they will trade him, as per The Fourth Period. I'm wondering when that period of impasse occurs, around the TDL or after their season is completed?

If we do trade for Rantanen, then I hope it is mostly futures (prospects and picks) and one NHL youth. The pool of teams that can afford Rantanen's future extension (probably $11+ mil AAV) and still field a full roster is small. Here is Puckpedia's current cap projections for 2025-26 season: link. Gotta think it's going to be a draft lottery team with ample cap space with loads of high end draft prospects and picks that will have a likelier chance to trading for Rantanen.

I could understand opening up his ntc but why would he do it to go to Philly? Would that even be a better situation than here at this point?

Gibson is finally playing well and the Ducks are getting quality goaltending almost every night now. If Verbeek wants to be playing meaningful games in March/April then Gibson stays IMO. Unless, of course, Verbeek and Gibson have already privately agreed to find a new home for him ASAP.
