The Athletic suggests the top 2 targets for Gibson as Carolina and Edmonton. Nothing new or crazy.

Thought it was interesting though that they, and every other professional sports writer who talks about Gibson, says his contract is insane: too long and too high. But at the same time, they say that once he's been traded, he'll be a 1A & 1B type of tandem.

Basically, they suggest that the Ducks need to retain to trade a #1 goalie for scraps. At the same time, that #1 goalie who is good enough for playoff teams is so expensive at 6 mil that it can't be justified. The amount of undervaluing the Ducks as a team and Gibson as a goalie is crazy. The cognitive dissonance is unreal.
Welcome to the ducks where our assets are worthless and their value is nothing.

Edit: sorry, didn't realize I was in the same thread and posted twice in a row

I’m probably in the minority here but I think Helleson has Minty expendable. It’s not that I want to deal him but I think he holds the most value to bring back scoring without significantly affecting the team now (he’s scratched 1/3 games now anyway)

*ducks*
Minty is the only shot at getting a #1 dmen.

Just turned 21…. You don’t consider Mintyukov expendable anytime soon.

If the play of a Colorado deadline scraps player has made our top 10 pick trade bait this doesn't bode well for our scouting and development department, I don't agree Helleson hasn't been THAT impressive though and that kind of trade has potential to be a Theodore tier disaster all over again

I don’t exactly understand what Helleson has to do with Minty tbh. Minty is a LHD and Helleson is a RHD right?

We are talking about a soon to be 24 year old who projects as a steady minute muncher - vs a just turned 21 year old who has shown way more offensive potential. It's an apples to oranges comparison and they won't be fighting for the same role moving forward

Im in the minority here and that’s fine. Doesn’t work that way often but it does today. Minty isn’t my favorite defenseman on this team and I think that’s probably clear.

May my next take be more popular (that’s a joke)

Cheers all.

Oh and fire Cronin
I just think you need to be careful moving 21 year old dmen over guys pushing 23-25 like lacombe and helleson.

I think Mintyukov will be a great 2 way guy and a #1 in his prime…. Zellweger hopefully ends us close to a shea theodore.

I’m also pretty high on Tristan luneau and tarin smith.

It’s great that helleson/lacombe are showing they are nhl talent and have top 4 upside…. But I’m pretty confident Mintyukov will end up the best of all our young dmen….. followed by luneau/zellweger

None of the defensemen are expendable because none of them are actually all that good yet. Sometimes some look good, sometimes others. Can’t go trading your 10th overall pick away because another, older prospect has a good couple weeks.

The fact Lacombe just played 3 and a half minutes more than the rest of our roster, after many of us saw him as likely the most expendable D going into the year - should be proof enough that there's still a lot of unfolding left to happen with this group. Have to be patient and let these situations play themselves out.

Fine, I'll extinguish my torch.... But I'm keeping my pitchfork out!

Helleson's ceiling is a competent 3rd pairing defenseman. Mintyukov's is a #1 two way D. You don't trade the talented one to play the older, functional one.

I would split hairs to say that Helleson has just enough overall ability to possibly be able to eat top 4 minutes well enough to be called a top 4 D. It will come down to his level of consistency but he may be able to play 20 per night if he limits mistakes enough. But there's still a big difference between that and a true play driver or top pairing guy, which Minty can become.

Keeps a hand free for flipping off Cronin

My torch/pitchfork are reserved for getting a scoring top 6 wing and

Honestly I like all the young d. Minty/Zell/Lacombe/luneau/helleson. Would rather them over this years Gudas. He unfortunately has been the biggest disappointment defensively for me this year. Shame since i liked him last year

Dumo/trouba are fine stop gaps although I think we didnt get enough for troubas 8 mm. I would have rather just moved on from fowler so the d was more or less set instead of trying to determine what to do with helleson outplaying gudas.

I wouldn’t say that’s his ceiling but I do think that is his most realistic, positive outcome

If it really comes down to it, I suspect we can easily move Gudas next year when his contract is expiring. Teams always love to add those types for the playoffs.

Guys like that on their own merits are 3rd pairing types ... but if they're steady enough can also ride shotgun with an impact dman. Either way, looks like a pretty good get for us from the Manson trade.

How long did it take Dahlin to solidify himself as an elite level number 1 again? I'm not overly worried about Mintyukov. The stagnation is troubling but it's no cause for serious alarm.

I think Zellweger has more of a shot at being a #1 dman than some think. He also just turned 21 a few months ago…

But I agree that I wouldn’t trade Minty
I disagree on Zellweger. He may become an elite PMD and PP QB but I don't see him as a #1 who can play in all situations. He's just too small and we've seen several times this year when he's knocked off the puck or loses a battle in the corner. Tenacity and combativeness only can carry him so far. Even when he physically matures he will still be an undersized dman who will need a defensive-focused partner for balanced d-pairing.

I think zellweger will be a slightly better version of fowler on both ends of the ice.

Coming from you that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.

I mean i generally said Cam was a solid #3/2nd pair guy.

I think thats where Zellweger will be.... but i think zellweger offers more in terms of compete/battling in the Dzone.

Zell also has a pretty good shot, and better hands and id say better skating (at least the current version of cam... prob debatable during cams first few season)

That being said id love for zellweger to proove me wrong and show he can be a #1.... but i do question if he can be a do everything type player... i think hell def mostly be used offensively.

Didn't Manson played on Colorado's 3rd pairing in their cup run ?
That Manson trade is looking like a big win. They still got Terrance from the Manson trade too.
