Answering ECHL Behind-The-Scenes Questions On Contracts, Lineups And More

Dec 14, 2024
Justin Cohn

I recently was texting with an ECHL coach about what he expected from a game that night. It was three hours before puck drop, and he sent me his lineup – and then the opposing team’s.

This threw me for a second.

I come from an old-school era in which coaches would play mind games when it came to lineups. You didn’t know with absolute certainty who’d be starting in net until it happened. ...

Apparently, coaches exchange lineups 1-3 hours before games (in today's ECHL). I felt foolish for not knowing this, but if I, someone who walks in this world, didn’t know that, then I started wondering what other interesting things were going on behind the scenes in the ECHL that other people didn’t know. ...

Awright, time to fess up ... Who among us thought the Heartlanders would be in 3rd place with over 30 points in the Central Division at this point in the season? :noway: Maybe the small crowds @ Xtream Arena reduce the team's distractions.

Very surprised by that. Of course, I am surprised by many things.

go Norfolk!
It looks like it will be a fun season in the North Division. I am surprised by how well the Nailers are playing. And the Admirals are not going away either.

On the 5th, Indy traded Idaho for Thomas Caron and he has fled to play overseas instead of reporting to Indy. This would have been his 4th ECHL team in the last 2.5 seasons. Indy trades away a fan favorite and gets BURNED.

Pretty good chance that Indy Hockey Ops knew Caron would balk at reporting when they made the trade. But they'd still own his ECHL rights, and North American players don't often stay in Europe for very long. His player stats portray underwhelming talent (as do the numbers for Andrew Bellant), but a year or two overseas may refocus him & offer the Fuel a more valuable asset for a future trade. Deals at this level of hockey aren't always about immediate gratification.

Beyond The Stars: 10 Depth Players In The ECHL You Should Know

Any coach will tell you that a hockey team cannot be carried just by its star players. Depth is pivotal. FloHockey's Justin Cohn explains.

Jan 8, 2025 by Justin Cohn

Any coach will tell you that a hockey team cannot be carried just by its star players. Depth is pivotal.

Players who do the little things – block shots, win faceoffs, hit opponents – are just as valuable as the players who score the goals and make highlight-reel passes.

While the ECHL has plenty of ballyhooed stars – such as the Norfolk Admirals’ Brady Fleurent, the Idaho Steelheads’ Hank Crone and the Savannah Ghost Pirates’ Dennis Cesana – let’s take a look at 10 players who even passionate ECHL fans may not have noticed as much as they should have this season. ...

Losing Andrew Bellant sucks but his production has gone down and the team was looking at future value.

Idaho has been trying to trade for him for a while and it looks like once his value lowered they pulled the trigger and sent Indy an offer that was hard to refuse. A lot of players and fans were unhappy with the trade, but business is business. I'm not 100% positive about this one, but it sounds like Indy did initially expect Caron to report at the time of the trade although it may still work out for them in the long run. They could definitely use someone what can bring some offense though, they have a lot of low scoring games but entertainment wise their physicality more then makes up for it.
