Prospect Info: 2024-25 Ducks Prospects

If Solberg did wait for a moving screen so the goalie couldn't see when the shot was launched, then hot damn! I know top-end players who score often actually plan for that masking to occur before they take their shot.
Yeah looked like he waited there for the perfect shot.

Btw...Solberg listed at 6'3 218. Färjestad's coach talked about his size, and how it helps him knocking opponent players off the puck, and cleaning up in front of his net. Going to be a beast if he continues to bulk up.

In my dreams him and Luneau work out as a tandem. Had the same kind of hope when Hampus and Monty arrived. Hope it works this time.

I think the Luneau-Solberg pairing makes more sense. Luneau can be the puck moving play driver with more offensive focus and Solberg can be the physical stay at home defenseman that can open up space for Luneau.

Though to be honest, I kinda think a dominant physical presence might be better as a pairing for Zellweger whose biggest problem, really, is getting outmuscled off the puck. If Solberg becomes known for a mean streak it might have a deterrent effect.

Interesting. CSB Final ranking of 2024 had Solberg's metric at 6'2 and 205 lbs. He's grown an inch and add 13 lbs since he was measured by last by CSB. Solberg has always been a beast due to his advanced physical development, which is why he was playing against men in his age 15-16 season in Norway and forward. Against his age peers, Solberg was able to produce offensively. Against men, the overall development was removed and he relied on his body more to mash and smash.

The move to the SHL from Norway is going to help Solberg finally get higher level play development than mashing and smashing his way around the ice. He has the physical gifts to afford to be patient for plays to develop. He needs more of this type of development to make him into a top-4 defenseman than just a mashing and smashing 3rd pairing d-man.

My standard of top-end defensive defenseman is Hampus Lindholm. He dominated as a 17-18 year old in the SHL j20 and HockeyAllvenskan (HA). From reports, his HA team got into SHL promotion tourney because of Lindholm's defense as he tilted the ice often. At age 18-19, he spent half a season in the AHL on North American ice after being held for medical reasons by the Ducks. Finally, at age 19-20 season, Lindholm finished with the second highest +/- rating on the NHL club with a +29 rating, ATOI of 19:26, and a CF% of 51.2% in 78 games played. Hampus was placed 7th best in rookie recognition in the league (Calder Trophy list).

I don't expect Solberg to be at Lindholm level of play at the same age, but I want Solberg to get as close as possible at tilting the ice while also being mashing and smashing d-man before coming to North America. The development program for the Ducks isn't great right now, which is why I'd rather let Solberg stew in the SHL for another year and solidify himself as a top-4 or top-2 defenseman for Farjestad next season. Anaheim had just shipped one of its own defensive prospects, LD Dionicio, to the Swiss league because they couldn't tame his overtly passionate display on the ice, after the play is dead. Very similar to Solberg's situation, but Farjestad is willing to work with Solberg.

@Hockey Duckie I haven't heard anything when it comes to Solberg next season, it's certainly possible that he stays another year with Färjestad. Their coach obviously likes him, letting him play top pairing minutes with their best d-man. We know Solberg has been benched for disciplinary reasons and he's been upset by this, but for the coach it's probably a part of the development.

But I guess it's up to the Ducks, I heard it was Verbeek who ordered the Clara move, not happy with the way Färjestad treated him. The GM is probably more pleased with Solberg's progression there.

To be fair to Farjestad, Clara has had a very up-and-down season. He had a very rough October and November production.

I do understand that Clara still needs time to play games and probably why the Ducks' GM Verbeek wanted Clara in a better situation to play more games. Oddly enough, Verbeek has three youth defensemen [Minty (age 21), Zellweger (age 21), and Helleson (age 23) ] in the NHL that he puts into a rotation and that player sitting out would miss about five consecutive games. It's that inconsistency I don't understand about the Ducks GM and why it's better for Solberg to become more polished away from the org.

On a tangent, the other youth defensemen, LaCombe, spent four seasons in the NCAA (US college) developing his defense and offense. He needed last year to adapt to the NHL speed and gameplay. This year, he started slow due to sickness and then showed off improved productions, but was still put into a youth rotation. Once a veteran LD was traded away, then LaCombe got consistent playing time is when his game was able to flourish.

I gathered up the stats up to Mar 2nd for the prospects update, but haven't found time to publish it all. Maybe later on before the game. But I had a double take when I saw Massé's total and ppg rate for the past two weeks: 6 gp, 10g +4a = 14 pts, 2.33 ppg, and a +5 rating. I had to expand the Goal cell in excel to fit in a double digit production! I couldn't believe it when I recorded it and had to look at his per game production on his QMJHL site to confirm 10 goals were scored.

  • RW Massé

  • RW Sennecke
Quick Notes:

This late into the season and we have three prospects scoring over a ppg in RW Sennecke (1.63), RW Massé (1.32), and C Blais (1.22). A couple more are on the fringe with C Procyszyn (0.97), LD Tarin Smith (0.89), and C Terrance (0.87). Tarin ranks 8th in scoring for WHL defensemen.

Futures Preview

Here is a table on our CHL prospects. Drafted CHL prospects have to be signed within two years from their draft year or they will go back into the draft. We have three that have not been signed in RD Port, LD K. Smith, and C Terrance. Terrance maybe the only one signed. As for the 2024 draft class, Blais is the only one eligible to play at the AHL level, provided he is signed first. Sennecke will probably get a 9-game look or less with the NHL club and be put on the Luneau weight training program until December, to be returned to juniors as well as, hopefully, participate in the WJC-20.

🌠 Honor Roll Club 🌠
  • RD Moore

RD Moore is in his final year at Harvard. Seeing that spurt of offense is a delight, considering Harvard has been in rebuild mode for the past two seasons: 50th/64 teams last year and 39th/64 teams this year in Pairwise ratings.

Moore is 6'3, 194 lbs, shoots right, and can skate like the wind. Verbeek has asked Harvard for the past two years to utilize Moore as a two-way d-man, but due to lack of talent, Moore has been relegated to shutdown RD for both seasons. If Moore is signed and Helleson re-signed, then Moore would probably be the second most developed youth RD in the org. It would behoove Verbeek to get Moore signed so that the Ducks have plenty of RD darts in the system.

🔥 En Fuego Club 🔥
C Pettersson (in HA)
LD Uljanskis (Sweden Jr)
G Clara

🌠 Honor Roll Club 🌠
C Galimov

Promotions:
LD Uljanskis got a reward of playing in the SHL recently.
C Pettersson feels like he got "demoted to the SHL" playing wing and playing far fewer minutes, including a 3:39 stint in a Mar 4th game. I usually praise SHL clubs for developing prospects, but Pettersson has been yo-yo'ing around three different leagues in a crazy fashion! See the video below as proof of how badly Pettersson has been ragdolled by the Modo organization! At least Solberg has an org trying to work with him to stay with the SHL club while trying to develop more professional habits on the ice.

Maxim Massé, LW, Chicoutimi Saguenéens (Anaheim Ducks)

With the Chicoutimi Saguenéens rocking an 8-1-0-1 record in February, it’s only natural that their best player is at the heart of it. Maxim Massé started off the month with a six-point outing against Acadie-Bathurst, and never looked back.

With 20 points in his last 10 games, Massé has taken control of Chicoutimi’s offence and made himself its focal point. A phenomenal cycle and retrieval forward, Massé seemingly wins every battle he enters, then attacks off the wall and drives the net. He recycles shots, pushes through checks into open ice, and makes great use of his heavy release.

The Anaheim Ducks’ 66th-overall selection in the 2024 NHL Draft continues to dominate through strength and positioning — the layer of manipulation needed to navigate NHL structures and break them down isn’t there yet. The avenue to improve that is the sheer amount of puck touches he’s getting right now — his teammates seek him out, delegate to him, and feed off of his habits. Massé has an opportunity to leverage that into more direct manipulative skill, but he needs to grasp it soon. The more time he spends playing his current quick-touch, hard-skill style, the less likely he is to develop those tools.

Beckett Sennecke, RW, Oshawa Generals (Anaheim Ducks)

Even if the puck wasn't going in as frequently for Beckett Sennecke as it had been in the first-half of the season, it was still a productive February for the dynamic Generals winger.

Sennecke recorded 13 points during his 9-game point streak last month, including a hat trick against the Guelph Storm. The versatility, frequency and deception in his play creation makes him one of the league’s most dangerous puck carriers. His unique blend of manipulation, high-end handling skills, and ability to execute at top speeds while absorbing contact has been on display all season long.

And don’t forget – Sennecke rises to the occasion when the stakes are highest. His postseason performance last year is what catapulted him up to third overall at the NHL draft. Now leading the Generals in scoring by a wide margin (the next closest teammates are 17 points back), Sennecke looks ready to lead Oshawa into what will hopefully be another long playoff run.

Notes:

Cutter is still finding ways to generate points, but I think he is better with Mac as his center than Lundy or Harkins. While this game set doesn't include last night's game against the Oilers, the moment Cutter gets put back together with Mac, Cutter nets three assists in the game! That is his first 3-point performance in his NHL career!

Also included with Cutter and Mac for the scoring in the Oilers blowout win is Colangelo finally playing with Mac! Colangelo put into a offensive role and he get 1g + 1a in last night's game. The two games posted in the 2-Week Production is Colangelo being centered by Lundestrom.

Let's run Cutter-Mac-Colangelo for a few more games, Cronin. Maybe we got something here with a youth heavy line. Cutter is the speedster sniper. Colangelo is the PF heavy with hands. And Mac is a heavy puck hound around the boards and in front of the net who can also pass as well as snipe.

As for Helleson, his role is a stay-at-home D. Having a +1 rating, 9 blocks, and 5 hits in five games is a good hold for a 3rd pairing D.

🔥 En Fuego Club 🔥
  • C Pitre
  • RW Nesterenko
  • RD Luneau
  • RW Pastujov (got injured in game 5 and didn't participate in game 6)
  • RD Biakabutuka (ECHL... I think I forgot to update his ECHL production for the last update)
  • G Buteyets (ECHL... Stopped 30 out of 32 shots)

Notes

The Gulls are losing players to injuries or call-ups. Colangelo was recalled as Fabbri was put on IR. The Gulls have been giving a few Tulsa Oilers ATO recently to fill in the missing gaps for the time being.

San Diego's record in the last 10 games are 7-2-0-1 (15 points). In February, the Gulls went 8-2-1-0 (17 points). They are 7 points away from tying for a playoff spot, but the teams ahead of them do have a game or two in hand.
