Prospect Info: [2024 - 21st] Michael Hage, Chicago Steel (USHL), Committed to U of Michigan

There were rumours that Cayden Lindstrom was leaving Medicine Hat for Michigan but it turns out he’s going to MSU instead it looks like. Would have been fun to see him and Hage together.

That was the other one.

I know the CHL is getting f***ed here, but going to the NCAA in the 19 year old seasons of top prospects is such a better development path.

The CHL is benefiting overall as they will be keeping all of the top prospects who were playing in lesser junior leagues in order to protect their NCAA eligibility. Getting the 17 and 18 year old seasons on elite players such as the Makar's, Celebrini's, Fantillis's and lesser stars like Wood, Boisvert, Hage etc will be a bigger boon than losing the odd mega star in their D+1 season (some of whom were turning pro anyways due to not having NCAA eligibility)

This is the reason that the CHL fully endorsed the new rules as the old rules were implemented by the NCAA to keep kids out of the CHL and create American feeders for the NCAA. It is an obvious win for the CHL as it means more overall exposure to elite Canadian talent and that is good for business.

Michigan has some NIL money to spend next year, wouldn't be surprised if they land a McKenna or Martone.

This time next year Hage might be able to sign and help a potential playoff push.

TJ Hughes announced he's returning to Michigan next year, not happy about that as the coach clearly prefers him over Hage so unless they move Hage off center next season, he'll be back on the 2nd line, 1st PP unit.

Also Jayden Perron is leaving North Dakota to join Michigan next year

Makes sense that he preferred him to an 18yr old.

If Hage can pack some pounds, improve his skating, you’d think that with a year under his belt, he may dethrone TJ as the number 1 C

We’ll see, I’m just elated that he’s heading for another College year to grow his game and body.

Not with this coach as Hage was clearly the more skilled player and he was one of the only ones consistently creating chances. Hughes is good on the PP but they do play on the same unit with Hage lining up on wing and sometimes dropping to the point since he's a good playmaker.

The coach has made some curious comments about Hage and he's coming off a bad year so he's likely going to be on the hot seat next year as Michigan is one of the top 3 programs in all of college hockey so a new coach likely won't last too long if he keeps missing NCAA tournaments. That said we don't know what kind of message he's been trying to get through to Hage who clearly wasn't getting it as his 2nd half was terrible compared to his 1st half.

I wouldn’t worry too much about Hage’s skating: he’s already a dynamic skater at the NCAA level. Once he fills out his frame, Hage will become a dominant player at Michigan regardless of his linemates and a virtual lock for Team Canada at the next WJC.

With Demidov, Hutson, Fowler, Hage, Beck, Tuch, Davidson and Florian this could get interesting for the long suffering Montreal fans.

Yeah sorry I should have read that you were talking about CHLers possibly moving.
the new NCAA rules are going to destroy the CHL and make the BCHL pointless. Star players are not going to play in towns like Prince George, Brandon etc in the W, they will now go NCAA and play for a top university. They don't lose their eligibility now, so it's going to get ugly to try and keep talent in the W. The BCHL only existed so kids could move onto Univeristy or College, the league has been dead for years now
