When you consider the strides that Malinski has made to become an NHL regular this season compared to last, I think the Avs will want to hang on to him.

Besides, after they get the upgrade they need, he's likely going to be their #6D and it's much easier to limit his minutes in the playoffs anyways.

I think the Avs will want to target a D-Man that can fill-in should a Top-4 d-man go down to injury. I think that's the key. There are a lot of bottom pairing guys that they can acquire but if these guys can't play higher in the lineup and we have a hole to fill, that could end up costing us.

Agree with you 100%.

I still think the guy they'd want to acquire is M. Pettersson from Pittsburgh. For me, he's the ideal guy.
I'd love Pettersson, but he is more of a guy you target if Girard or Toews go down, rather than a 3rd pairing defensive guy.

IMO Malinski would be fine in the playoffs. He started to have troubles after a stretch of games at 4D. Maybe it was too much ice time for him. IMO what he needs is a better linemate than Middleton, CDH, Kylington, etc. I think that new partner is coming soon.

I'd rather him be the 7D simply because it means quality depth.

But I do agree we should keep him and I do agree we should give him a look with a real partner first.

And yeah given how aggressive CMac has been this year I have a feeling they get something done this month tbh.

I would keep Malinski to be the 7D in the playoffs, but I don't think he should be in the starting 6.

I could absolutely see Brian Dumolin being a target and one we get in the next week or two.
I have not seen him very much this year but by all accounts he was a guy that was very much 'cooked' in seattle. Maybe it was injury related but he played as their 6th D for the Kraken last year.

Maybe he's been able to turn his game around this season but I personally don't believe he's a guy who could fill-in on the Top-4 if there was an injury situation. I certainly could be wrong though.

Ducks fans seem to think he'd be an excellent #5 on a playoff team and hes been solid for them. Probably not quite good enough to be a Top 4 guy but could play spot duty it called upon basically.

From what I remember of his game he fits what we would like our Dmen to do especially further down the lineup. Which is to play "steady"(As steady as bottom pairing guys can lol) and be able to make strong breakout plays up to the forwards.

Think he used to be a pretty solid skater as well.

Edit: Yeah just reading the main board and it sounds like he's been really good for Anaheim this year.

Also sounds like both sides would be down with a "Dumolin(50%) + 2025 4th for 2025 2nd" deal which seems like reasonable value to me as well.

Whis is weird because all his fancy stats were really good last year. Although I suppose that could have been a more sheltered roll.

I liked Malinski more than others before, and he's improved a bit this season, but I have a hard time seeing the Avs comfortable with him in the top 6 during the playoffs this year. Maybe in years past, but they're not taking any chances anymore.

Those plays where he's almost in trouble, but finds a way to recover, have a habit of ending up in your net in the playoffs. And even though I like that he tries to battle in front of the net, that job will be much harder physically in the playoffs. I don't think he's quite been at the level to make the Avs comfortable.

He's a bit vulnerable to physical play, which will increase tenfold in the playoffs, and I think the Avs are trying to eliminate as many vulnerabilities as possible at this point.

I think there's a good chance he's trade bait at the deadline, and we see an entirely new veteran third pair brought in, with one of the two able to play in the top 4 if need be.

Ya its possible, i just hope we pair him up with a solid veteran Dman first and see how it turns out.

My bet would be one smooth skating two way guy that can help on the breakout to replace Malinski, and a bigger more physical PK guy to pair him with. Both vets.

Dumoulin seems like a good fit for Malinski's role. Not sure the other guy. I still think they'd be interested in Oleksiak. He can play the right side too. I think they have the assets for both.

This is a veteran playoff D core I can see the Avs interested in.

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Dumoulin - Oleksiak

Yeah 7th D would be ideal obviously but getting two dmen might be a bit rich for them especially if they get one that can play top 4 in case of injuries. Maybe use Malinski+ to get a younger and better Manson so they can move on from him this summer? IDK but I am fairly certain CMac will target a dman that he will be keeping for at least another season or more. That has been his MO lately. Maybe if they go for two dmen the 2nd one could be a cheaper true rental.

Regardless IMO it will happen fairly soon so it costs less and he has time to get acclimated to the system.

If we dont add too much and maybe trade Malinski for Olesiak, id be happy. Would love having 4 dmen who can PK.

Honestly if they go with Malinski on the third pairing I’m fine with it, but they gotta pair him with someone way better.
Malinski would get abused in the playoffs. He doesn't have the defense nor the offense to make up for his severe lack of size.

Got no idea who the Avs are targeting. My favorite prodigal son (JMFJ) looks like father time has finally caught hold of him. He's only played aroud 25 games this season for CBJ. Besides, we'd need the 2010 version to pair with CDH.

Whose everyone thinking/hoping the Avs are targeting for that bottom 3 dman they appear to be hinting at?

We have the Rangers 2nd round pick this year right? Damn that thing is almost like a late first with how shit the Rangers are.

Yeah, it's our biggest asset in terms of draft capital over the next 2 years.

We can't trade our 2026 1st because it has a condition on it(2025 1st to PHI is top 10 protected, defers to 2026 if we have a top 10 draft pick).

Already traded our 2026 2nd in the Blackwood deal.

2025 NYR 2nd is our best draft asset. Might be too early to trade the 2027 1st.

I think they'll target an expiring guy and get retention or a cheaper two year guy.
