I'm not really a fan either. I think he's *good* but not a great player. Certainly not a high impact player come playoff time.Svechnikov sucks. 1 more playoff run with Rants would be better.

He did score at a ppg rate last years playoffs.I'm not really a fan either. I think he's *good* but not a great player. Certainly not a high impact player come playoff time.
Again, another post where IF we trade Rants we get nothing in return? If things go perfectly we can win with this team. Without Rants we can't. Imo. No way he trades him, because of that.
Hmmm how about - "Hey Mack, we just resigned Mikko to MORE than what you make because we know he's your friend and you enjoy playing with him. You're not an idiot so you understand that this is going to screw us over cap-wise for the foreseeable future but you don't care right, since you're not really that competitive and don't really mind if we just become a mid-team, right?“Hey guys, I know I just gave up assets for an impending UFA goalie and signed him to what is probably a slight overpayment, but we’ve decided to go asset management mode regarding Mikko and traded him away for some picks/prospects and a 2nd/3rd line forward.
No no, I know he’s 2nd in the NHL in points. I know he’s a beast in the playoffs. I hear you MacK, you’re not getting any younger. We know this was a key year to go all-in for a Cup win, but trading him and looking towards the future is what is best for business.
Good luck guys, we believe in you.”

I am sure that you enjoy it - like we all do - when Mikko "loses an edge" in the corner with no one around him rather than backcheck 10 times a game...it's really hilarious when he does that."
Yeah, I think it’s an incredibly difficult thing to spin to this team.“Hey guys, I know I just gave up assets for an impending UFA goalie and signed him to what is probably a slight overpayment, but we’ve decided to go asset management mode regarding Mikko and traded him away for some picks/prospects and a 2nd/3rd line forward.

I really doubt Mack would give a rats fart about Rantanen making more than him. I agree with some of your arguments, but this part I just don’t see.Hmmm how about - "Hey Mack, we just resigned Mikko to MORE than what you make because we know he's your friend and you enjoy playing with him. Aww come on, I was enjoying the fan fiction going on between you two.Sorry, but you’re on your own with this one, old friend.
I understand where you're coming from and I think the probability that he resigns with the Avs is probably 90% rather than he doesn't 10%.Yeah, I think it’s an incredibly difficult thing to spin to this team.
All of the best guys on this team that were there for the cup win know what Rants was for it. Even if you get a great deal in a trade, there’s no question the player coming back is not as good.
It’s pretty hard for the team, at least in the short term, to not be bummed by a current season downgrade.
Put me in the camp that doesn’t believe a trade is possible. They’ll re-sign him, or lose out in UFA, but they’ll at least have their cap space problem solved. Maybe there are some cap strapped teams to take advantage of in the offseason.
Agreed - he wouldn't care about that but he might care about having a better overall team.I really doubt Mack would give a rats fart about Rantanen making more than him. I agree with some of your arguments, but this part I just don’t see.

One thing about the Avs though, historically they don't usually sign a player to more than what they are actually worth. Those that believed they were in a different stratosphere than they actually were, ended up on different teams. Whether that's Drury after winning a Cup in 2001 or RoR with that while sideshow circus.
Those players were eventually moved - and that's what C-Mac's job is - it's not to make moves that are populat in the room, it's to make the right moves for this team and for its future. Trading away Tyson Barrie probably wasn't a popular move in the dressing room but it had to be done. If Mikko wants $14M, I expect he won't be with this team next year but that will have been HIS choice.
Agreed - he wouldn't care about that but he might care about having a better overall team.
I'm assuming that if we trade an extended Rants to Carolina Necas++ is coming this way.
I'll be shocked if Mikko isn't signed long-term, as he should be, but you know who would look good on this team? A 24 year old Svechnikov signed for three more years at $7.75M/yr.
They're not going to trade Mikko.
It's either a re-signing or he walks. If nothing else, that frees up cap room.
Stastny left, Landeskog stayed. Landeskog was our captain at the time too.
Fair points, but I think there's a difference in how the Avs view core players, versus secondary players.
ROR and Barrie weren't really ever viewed in that "core" category IMO. So when they tried to play hardball back at the Avs, they were willing to lose them. Mikko is also a better player than those two.
They also had an internal replacement for Barrie in Makar, as well as the recently drafted Byram. Without that, I think Barrie probably gets re-signed to an overpayment.
I think Sakic took a few things from PL, and one was how they build a team around a core. PL would pinch pennies on the role players, and trade or let walk guys that were due raises, but all of that was so he could afford to spend what it took to keep his star core players, that commanded big contracts.
Felt like Staz may have misled the team into thinking he was likely to stay, with comments he made around the deadline, but then chased top dollar instead.
I always had a suspicion the team wasn't terribly happy with this. May be why they never really decided to bring him back for Cup runs, when they had multiple chances to, and a 3C role he would have been a good fit for.
I think ROR was part of the core until he signed that offer sheet.
I still would have loved for them to have took it, called AZ to warn them so AZ could flip him right back to us lol. That was some crazy shit irrc.
On his way perhaps, but he really only had one year of a meaningful role in the top six before the OS.
His role was kinda maxed out at 2C though, and that's not really a position that's viewed as part of your core. It's usually 1C, a winger or two, and a defenseman or two.
Come on, the guy who traded Drury has been dead for 4 years. Any relevance it has to the current front office is tiny, if it exists at all. And ROR was an ass who had no desire to play here. Also, not relevant.I understand where you're coming from and I think the probability that he resigns with the Avs is probably 90% rather than he doesn't 10%.

Yeah, I think he bet on himself, he wasn't fully there with a track record of production. I don't blame him for betting on himself and sticking to it either.
I will acknoledge 2C was part of a team's core more often pre cap. Sakic-Forsberg, Yzerman-Federov, Modano-Nieuwendyk.
Feels like Crosby-Malkin is the outlier in the cap era though. Maybe Thornton-Marleau/Pavelski, but that never really worked for them. Toronto is trying it with Matthews-Tavares, but it also hasn't worked so far.
All of these guys were pretty talented, high end 2C's that produced offense like 1C's in their day though. ROR was more that hard working, all around 2C, with a bit less offense.
Except he won a cup as a 1C. He was getting some hype as a Toews and Bergeron type 1C.
I don’t think they play the same style of game, but I find them somewhat similarly frustrating players. What? No.
Interesting that you think they play the same kind of game?

Might also be why for his 1000th game tribute video, the only Avalanche member to make an appearance was Gabriel Landeskog and it was mighty quick.Felt like Staz may have misled the team into thinking he was likely to stay, with comments he made around the deadline, but then chased top dollar instead.
