And Mikko also had 25 points that cup run so you can argue we don’t win without him.

But mind you 20 of those points were assists and apparently he benefits from the players around him so they don’t count.

This is the craziest message forum I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen such a hatred for a teams star player in any other sport ever in my life.

Sure, trade him for two average 60 point players and let’s see how many games we win.
Since when does disagreeing with someone on a certain point and maybe NOT wanting to lose a very good player for nothing as a UFA (like we did with Stastny) = hatred of said player?

That's a pretty strong word and certainly doesn't reflect the views of ANY Avs fan that I've encountered on here.

Now there is a portion of fans that want him re-signed at whatever cost, they just don't want to lose him and there are others who feel like he shouldn't be making more than MacKinnon and others still who would prefer to trade him for a very good return while using the cap space more efficiently.

Hardly any 'hatred' going around.

It’s a Finnish pickle. Which might make it a fish?

Peak HFAvs to be talking about trading a guy right after he has a 5 point game, including a hat trick
The underappreciation of Rantanen around here is something else. I think some fans have forgotten the days of not having superstar talent. CMac messed up, I fear, by not extending him this offseason. And if they didn't want to pay the price, they should have traded him for max value. The price is only going up from here, and now they're stuck in a hard place between coughing up or losing him for nothing. Hopefully they extend him soon and Rants understands how good he has it here with MacK and Makar and doesn't take them to the cleaners too badly.

Apparently there was an article fresh off the presses yesterday:

Projected only at a 4.4M increase for next year at the moment. I don't see the cap increasing significantly over 10M in two years.

There is one more question mark to our roster, the Landeskog contract. It could remain as dead cap space, but in best case scenario Landy returns at a top six level player or we use the 7M to grab a fifth top six player. Oh and I forgot LOC raise goes in effect NEXT season so that's 1.5M raise for him.

So roster would be something like:

Landeskog / 7M forward - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Nichushkin - Mittelstadt - LOC
Wood - 1M forward- 1M forward
1M forward - 1M forward - 1M forward

Makar - Toews
Girard / 5M defenseman - Manson replacement 4.5M
1M defenseman - 1M defenseman

5M goalie
1M goalie

I miscalculated the 1G raise, Blackwood makes around 2.5M now so adding 4M to that would help us get a 6.5M goalie, but I also forgot the LOC raise and we're back to a 5M goalie.

There's also the issue of where to get replacement players that are good enough for those cap hits.

If we could sign Rants/Makar to 11M and 13M instead of 13M and 15M, we would have enough to keep either Lehkonen or Drouin in addition to the roster above.

If we let Rants walk instead of paying 13M, we'd have enough to keep Lehkonen, Drouin, Colton or equivalent, and then an extra 4M to use on other positions. I guess you could forget about center depth and instead put the Colton money and the remaining money towards a top six forward at 7M. Would be more like this:

Landeskog / 7M forward - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Mittelstadt - 7M forward
Wood - 1M forward - LOC
1M forward - 1M forward - 1M forward

Markar - Toews
Girard / 5M defenseman - Manson replacement 4.5M
1M defenseman - 1M defenseman

5M goalie
1M goalie

Generally I'd like to keep everyone who's been good for us rather than hope we find a better player for the same price. In any case cuts will have to be made, so it's not like we are free to give out favorable deals.

Why is Lehkonen gone in your first scenerio?

As for Drouin? Who cares? The dude is a bandaide and can’t stay healthy

Rantanen @ 12.5 mil x 8
Blackwood @ 3.5 mil
Wedgewood @ 2 mil
Landeskog won’t be back IMO

Lehkonen- Mackinnon - Rantanen
Colton- Mitts- Nichushkin
Wood- Kelly- O’Connor
Kiviranta- Ivan- Smith

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
Malinski - Vet 1 mil

I’m too lazy to do the math without capfriendly. What does that lineup leave us with?

I would still put big money on Mikko ultimately signing for 8x$12.25M with the Avs.

If he can get $14M on the open market, I'm betting he signs for the same amount of money with the Avs, but over 8 years instead of 7. 14x7 is 98. 98/8 is 12.25.

8x$12.25M and it will be a very reasonable contract as the cap starts to possibly increase exponentially.

Maybe hatred was strong. But under appreciated most definitely.

Just go back and read the posts about trading him for guys like Konecky or other 60 point guys.

It makes no sense.

I probably post this every couple of weeks, but here we go again…

The Avs will not trade Mikko Rantanen.

You can stop dreaming of a Mikko trade. It’s not even up for discussion, has never even been slightly reported or speculated upon by anybody in the media.

The Avalanche are trying to win another Stanley Cup. MacKinnon will be 30 years old a year from now. The window is closing.

Mikko will be an Avalanche player until the end of the playoffs. He will either extend or walk as a free agent, with my money heavily betting on him re-signing.

Extends or walks. Nothing in between.
