Don't know if Jiricek is gonna pan out with the Wild yet but I must say I've been impressed with Minny ever since they bought out Suter and Parise.

If they manage to keep Kaprizov I'll have to admit that Guerin has been a very good GM.

Eh, we’ll see. I still think booting Evason in favor of Hynes will blow up in his face at some point. But yeah, the Fiala trade is looking really, really good for them, and who knows if this one does but it’s a worthy gamble.

Still think they were luck AF that they were forced to deal a disgruntled Cam Talbot and got Gustavsson from the Sens and he somehow turned into a franchise netminder (last year notwithstanding).

I guess that's a decent stoploss for someone who might be a total bust, but moving a very recent 6th overall for an AHL defender and what is looking like a late 1st and 3 years away 2nd doesn't look all that good.

Avs have been a lot better defensively than you might think. I'm way more concerned about their offensive production, especially on the power play.
Ehhhh.

They've been good at suppressing shots, but man they bleed high danger chances at a pretty alarming rate at the moment.

It really doesn't help when you can't trust your goalies to make any saves at all though. Forces you to have to try and play perfect defensive hockey which IMO is just leading to even more mistakes.

On the topic of defense, with Manson out I want to see them run this for the next few weeks:

Girard - Makar
Toews - Malinski

G/Makar have been the best pairing when together for the Avs this year, and I also wonder if moving Toews down and not quite as tough of matchups could help him while he isn't 100%. Plus I think he'd do a lot for Malinski as he gets a bigger role.

I'm honestly wondering if Malinski can't be a Top 4 guy moving forward for us. He is really, really good at pushing the play forward, moving the puck, and creating offense. Very Makar-lite the way he plays. And his defense has improved from last year.

Yeah, the goaltending is still the root cause, though I'll say that the top two lines have been shit defensively for long stretches, MacKinnon in particular gets hemmed in way too easily and has been floating in the defensive zone again, which he hasn't done in quite some time.

For me, if they're gonna try and fix the blueline they need to aim higher than third pairing. Manson has been absolutely abhorrent, and what's driving me nuts this year is that even when he's been throwing his body around (which IMO hasn't been that often) he's still losing puck battles. If the Avs wanted a guy who did that they could've signed Joel Edmundson.

But really, the top priority HAS to be goaltending. They've got to fix it or just punt on the year and start dealing away assets.
