After seeing that moronic 'Fabbro on waivers' from him - I think it confirms what I've suspected all along - he signed Stamkos thinking he'd have a great 1-2 punch at center.

Gotta feeling Fabbro was offered to absolutely no one and just dumped instead of trying to get anything for him.
This is shades of trading a 2nd round pick for Brad Stuart and signing him to a 3 year extension before he even plays a single game - type of mistakes.
Yeah Trotz will destroy that franchise.
I'm still not 100% convinced that Sid is a Pen for life. I'm like 99% convinced, but I'm not 100%.
With how competitive that guy is, I'm just not convinced if the Pens finish 32nd in the league this year, and they actually end up moving guys like Malkin and Letang.... I just think there's at least a small chance Sid decides he'd rather go somewhere he can maybe win again versus playing on an absolute dumpster fire without any of his longtime teammates for the last couple years of his career.
I'm also 100% certain the only place Sid would accept a trade to is the Avs.

It's so sad that the GMs believe they need the NHLPA's permission to offer shorter contracts. The damn idiots just can't help themselves. You think the players are going to be okay with that? They're going to want something done with escrow, ufa age, or adjustments to HRR. All things, I don't think the owners are cool with. I believe the GMs may just be f***ed here.

He obviously was highly thought of and got an interview. I wonder just how close he was to becoming the Avs GM...after the interview.

That was when we ended up with Sakic right? Honestly I wouldn't have bet on the ex-player being the better choice.

Yup, before Sakic got the job, Avs interviewed Dubas and the word is, he was close to getting the job

Nah, he gets to tear that roster down and build it from scratch the way he wants to.... But first he has to wait a couple more years. Not a lot of owners would give him that freedom as a GM.

The worst part about that is that in reality shorter term contracts end up benefitting the players more - the top stars anyways. The owners should be plenty happy about how things are.
The star players are the ones getting the max term deals anyways. It's not like Parker Kelly is getting 8 years.
When you think about a guy like Auston Matthews and the fact he only signed a 5 year deal and will be able to get even MORE money next time around - they probably wished he had signed max term.
Imagine if we had to think about re-signing MacKinnon in 3 years??
Where the players benefit is guys that aren't necessarily stars but getting super long term contracts anyways in their 3rd contract - stuff like Clarkson and Engvall but these aren't usually the highest AAV anyways.

He'll get traded to the Avs at the deadline, with one year left on his contract after that. Then in that final year, the Avs win the Cup, and Nate passes the Cup to a grizzled old man Sid instead of lifting it first. We then retire 87 and hang it next to 77

Wasn't that around the time Roy left? Sakic had technically been the GM since 2013 I believe.
Edit: Looked it up and the reports of Dubas interviewing with the Avs came out in May 2017. Was Sakic looking for his own replacement?

GMs know someone else will offer more term especially with guys in that 26-30 range. So they kinda have to offer it up. This is nothing new though… the NHL would love to limit term to 5 years. They’ve tried before and it will be their big thing this time. I’d bet we end up with a 5/6 or 6/7 compromise after the first push is 4/5.

Exactly. As Terry Frei aptly put it, every concession the owners demand from the players is just to save them from themselves. They don’t deserve this concession, not one bit. If you don’t like paying a guy for eight years then don’t f***ing offer it in the first place.

He's also been somewhat hamstrung in Toronto and in Pittsburgh. I'm not saying he's some elite GM in the wings, but he didn't have final say in TO and wasn't allowed to move Nylander for a dman and had(at least to start) to compete with the Penguins and not "retool".
I think it's hard to fully judge him so far... I think he clearly has some flaws that can improved upon, but when his rebuild of the Pens eventually happens I think it'll be easier to fully judge him as a GM.

I agree that he was handcuffed in Toronto. I don't think he had a say in signing John Tavares, which severely hampered the Leafs cap flexibility and their future contracts for Matthews/Marner/Nylander. However, I think his contract negotiating abilities are horrible and he gave his stars literally everything they asked for without the team getting anything positive. He was taken to the cleaners each time.
I think it remains to be seen what kind of GM he is, but we'll have to wait a longggg time to see that because so long as Sid is playing, that team wants to make the playoffs.

Yeah the Tavares contract especially f***ed him and the cap situation in Toronto. But I thought the first Nylander deal he did quite well on honestly. Marner was obviously tough for him. But Matthews... he's in damned if you do damned if you don't for his first contract. He probably could've held firmer and got some more term but I feel like getting into a holdout with Matthews would get him just as vilified imo. Like I said, plenty of flaws he needs to improve on and I'm curious how things end up looking when he can fully run the show in his upcoming rebuild whenever that is.

Dubas took the job in Pittsburgh with the understand that he'd have to try to keep the team competitive, while having the freedom to build how he wants in the future. There are ton of moves that is simply trying to bring guys into help Crosby today and following that 'competitive' piece that was always a losing cause... and that's what he's being judged on now. Ultimately what will determine his success is his accumulation of picks and prospects. He's gathered 2nd-5th round picks, grabbed some prospects, will be keeping his firsts, etc. Guys like Koivunen, Brunicke, Swanson, Lucius, 25-28 2nds, 24-27 1sts will determine how Dubas is doing.

I actually don’t remember if it was before Sakic got the job or while he had the job when they interviewed Dubas, but in any case I’m just glad Dubas wasn’t the Avs GM. We would have been the Leafs if he was. We’d have all this star forwards and no defense. Probably wouldn’t have drafted Makar with the 4th pick. Dubas would pick another forward.
