I may be the only one who doesn't remotely want Swayman. I just don't think spending that kind of money on any goalie works. Cleary Georgie wasn't the right budget move but I think that move might be out there yet.

how many goalies have we've been through in the past 8 seasons? I'm with you and also subscribe to the 'don't overspend on goalies' but I'm starting to get PTSD and we have the most unpredictable tabdemin the league at the moment. With Annunen now and Nabokov on the way you can have peace of mind (and one of the best goalie tandems in the league for the next ~4-5 years at around 9M total. With a rising cap, that's some nice peace of mind.

With expansion looming and already being a lull in the goaltending talent, Swayman is a guy I would bet on. There's not many other goalies available I'd be willing to do this for, but 8M for 8 years of his prime is a big way to stay competitive for that time period.

It's a moot point but really, going cheap on the goaltending and settling for average talent only works if the team in front of those goalies is talented enough and deep enough to overcome their shortcomings. The Avs are talented enough (arguably) but they ain't deep enough by any measure. They have to rethink their approach to goaltending because this simply isn't good enough.

Bringing in Swayman and giving him the money they're about to give Rantanen is the kind of move that would build my faith in this management staff.

In other words, never going to happen
Rants is getting 12m/yr, Swayman is around 8 big difference
Sounds like George and Rants to me. They can control the cost of Rants to the tune of 12M over 8 years.
What else are they adding for Rants? Rants is a top 15 player in the NHL. Sway has less than 150 games played and was a 1B backup

They're gonna save a seat on the plane next to Rants so that George can go with him.

Boston gets kinda weird with how they treat players. But that organization generally knows what they are doing.

And they chose to trade Ullmark for what they got. And also don't want to pay "market value" for Swaymans contract. Makes you wonder if they have their own internal metrics that question both of these goalies.

With the way Bednar operates Swayman would get 70+ starts. Maintaining an elite level of play over more games is always difficult for a goalie. Regardless of how good he is.

There's no way the Avs would move Rants and they won't get Swayman. They have shown they are not willing to pay a high dollar for a goalie since they got burned on Varly. Given Swayman will cost maybe a top 5 contract at his position, but at least a top 10 one... seems radically against the Avs' MO.

Which is ironic, considering if they had that Varly throughout the duration of this window there's a decent chance that we'd have celebrated more than one championship at this point.

Boston is getting all the heat because Neely opened his mouth publicly. But if what Neely said is remotely true, they are not cheeping or unwilling to pay him fair value. They may be negotiating around the edges, which they should definitely do... But just because Swayman says he wants $10M, or even $9M doesn't mean Boston should pay him that or that they are cheaping if tey don't.

Just like the AVs are not cheaping on Rantanen just because they don't want to give him whatever he wants. But Neely going public out of frustration was silly...

I absolutely love it when this board is down to whining about the 4th line and the 3rd pairing! (and Fourgiev of course...)
It means things are going well !
It actually reminds me of the year we won the Cup!

In two months, when Lehky is on the 3rd line and Wood on the 4th, I will recall this day with fondness.

What's more likely to happen is we see Lehky on the 1st line after Nuke's next suspension and Wood on the 2nd line once Landy gets hurt again. We'll be pissed off in perpetuity when Kelly is on the 3rd line and Tynan or something is a regular on the 4th line.

Are they? Not from where I'm looking. They have handled the situation poorly (traded Ullmark and gave away all their leverage, arbitration last year), but I think the majority actually think Swayman is the one being unreasonable here. At least it's close to 50/50

The time to trade Rantanen will be after MacK goes down for half the season, Landeskog isn't ready to come back, and Nuke gets his 1 year suspension.

Mikko to Boston is a trade that simply will not work. They don't have the cap space, and they sure as hell are not going to pay Mikko $2M more than Pasta. But....

Lots of moving parts here:

1) Find a team not on Mikko's M-NTC, and get a serviceable 2RW and a bunch of picks

2) Use those picks and the Ranger's 2nd to pay the RFA compensation for signing Swayman. At $8M the prices is a 1, a 2 and a 3. Maybe even toss in another 2 to ensure Boston does not match.

2a) If CMac truly knows that Landy is coming back, a permanent 2RW is not even needed and perhaps a 4/5D would come this way.

I do not hate Mikko. That said, he contributes little other than the snipe from the right circle, and the neat little shovel play in the crease ( which is mostly Nate, Drouin or Makar doing the heavy lifting with a great pass.) Mikko is simply too expensive. Like @niwotsblessing I grew up with the Islander dynasty. They already had Bossy, Trottier and Gillies on the first line, but went and got Butch Goring - a first liner elsewhare - for the second line, damn the cost of doing it, because there was no salary cap. The late Pierre LaCroix also made acquisitions look easy due to the lack of Salary Cap. Even at $92.5, there isn't any room for a decent bottom 6 ( and they might as well just not have a 4th line) with Mikko anywhere above $11M x 8.

Very possible.
But there's not much you can do about it now.
Nuke is untradable and you need to keep Cap for the Captain.
So we're fine until we're not. At which point you have cap space from LTIRed captain or cap space from PAP-ed coke head.
So either we have 11 good forwards, with Wood and Kovalenko on the 4th line. Or one or both of Landy/Nuke shit the bed, at which point we have to make move with that cap space.
The real danger-zone is if that happens AFTER the trade deadline... Then we're really screwed... until then, its pretty much sit back and watch the movie...

LOL. Only way this works is if Mikko goes to Philly, or Philly gets involved somehow to trde out pick back. Not to mention you can't use the Rangers 2nd for an offersheet, and we'd still have to find our original 2nd and 3rd, wherever the hell they are.

I think the idea of trading Mikko is valid (or rather was, can't see it happening now), and people can make very good arguments for it.

But please. Quotes like above, once again, show how underrated this guy is. And unlike in most cases where a player is underrated by the league around him, in his case it's by the teams own fanbase.

I will listen on the chatter for trading Mikko, like I said there could've been some interesting scenarios and maybe even ways of improving this team (which is not usually the case when trading away a superstar). What I will not have, is this slandering on him. The guy is a 50G/100 point player, top-10 playoff PPG ALL TIME. TSN had him at #10 in their top-50 list of players coming into this season. There's a good reason for that, not just "he's good at sniping from the right circle and making nice shovel plays while piggybacking from Nate and Cale".

Swaymans issues are more than financial. They've kinda treated Swayman like shit and he's giving it right back to them. I really don't think Swayman is in the wrong here at all.

Also per DF the offer was 8x7.8, assuming it's accurate. So while basically the same offer it's still 1.6mil less than what Neely publicly said.
