The team didn't win the Presidents Trophy last year relying only on special teams and goaltending. Were they a top team analytically? No, but they were clearly on the better third of the league.

Actually they kinda did, they were (and obviously still are) a team that bleeds chances but gets bailed out on the regular by elite goaltending, and then just manage to score enough both on the power play and penalty kill to win games.

Bottom line, they have a *good* team but not great. So yeah, upper third. But unless an insane amount of stuff goes right for them in the postseason, not a legit contender.

I mean they're an incredibly flawed team... Elite talents in Panarin and Shesty. But Zib and Trocheck as your 1 and 2C aren't good enough down the middle and the defense is top heavy. Can easily get by on talent and goaltending in the RS, but they just aren't well built enough to be an actual contender. They're like the Hurricanes completely flipped.

I think that's a bad decision, but not surprising.

Even if you include the Tampa mauling, George is at 2.62/.906 in November. Remove it/only include games he started, it's 2.33/.915.

It feels worse than that because a) he was so heinous in October b) Annunen took over the mantle as "Worst NHL goalie" this month (4.17/.826).

The fact the team has virtually ignored goaltending development the last twenty f***ing years outside of ONE half-assed effort (Annunen) is so very frustrating. Like, only now, this year they finally decided it might be a good idea to get more than one goalie prospect in the system!?

Laf and Kakko will be fine. The latter would be the third best forward with the Avs on 5v5 points, and they are actually trying him at center now. Turns out his upside might be a #2C after all. Laf is already a top winger, and would be PPG if he was on PP1. There's a reason the Rangers are holding on for these young players, and are trying to shake up the vets.

As for the goaltending with the Avs, I can use the quote from Jeremy Clarkson: "It's like looking through the menu at a Scottish restaurant. Not much in it, and nothing you'd want". Blackwood could be interesting, but I think the Sharks are totally fine with keeping him.

Here's an out of box thought: Matt Murray from the Toronto Marlies. He's cheap, a proven veteran, and #4 in the Leafs depth chart.

Both in terms of not looking desperate for a trade and also to keep things positive and supportive with Georgiev. Bednar tried at various times to give George some tough love, but he seemed to rightly realize last year that was the wrong strategy for him.

They just got to ride this out unfortunately. Probably until the deadline where they can afford to fit a 1B/1A under the cap.

Rough guess maybe they're trying to get some retention on Gibson. You've been on that train for years now right?

Could make a good tandem with Nabokov. An older vet that's still playing well as a starter, with a younger promising goalie that you can bring along slowly, and migth be able to take over if Gibson starts to falter. Kind of a JSG 2.0 situation, but better if Gibson can keep playing well.

Playoff experience too, though not for a while. That might be a good motivator for him though.

Getting Anaheim to agree to take George and retain 50% of $6.4M for essentially 2½ season is going to cost more that people want, IMO. Probably need to get a 3rd team involved to take on some of that retention and/or possibly send George to a 3rd team.

I think the Ducks are f***ed if they believe any team will trade for Gibson's entire contract. I am higher on him than most but I also realize he comes with both injury and consistency issues.

If they aren't retaining, they've gotta be taking expiring money back AND accepting minimal positive assets.
