Mitts has 3 more games to show CMac that we don’t need a new 2C. That’s not a lot of games so Mitts needs to produce as a legit 2C in all 3 games. It’s either that or CMac’s mind is already made up and he’s already working on getting someone regardless of what Mitts does.

Actually scratch that. If Miller turning down a trade to Avs is true, then obviously CMac is looking for a new 2C
I’m certain Cmac is looking for an upgrade, these next few games hold no water on that regard. Who knows if he can pull it off but mitts cannot be trusted to shoulder the responsibility. Maybe he gets hot at the right time but in no way should it be expected.

If mitts is still here, I’ll cheer him on and hope for the best but it is not a best case scenario in regards to 2c. Having said that, if he’s still here after the deadline and Bednar doesn’t try experimenting the 2c role then I will put more blame on him than Cmac. It takes 2 to tango in a trade but not for switching up lines.

You have no clue how he would have fit in here. You can't just assume a player is going to be a problem. Seems like he's just fine in NYR.
It has only been 8 games. Give it time. There were problems in the USA team at the 4 Nation tournament just a few games in.

Lots in here, but one quote in particular caught my attention in regards to Zegras:

"You need to put him on a team with a star player who will outwork him. That's the only way you fix him," one NHL executive said.

I haven't entertained the idea of him being the 2C solution, but if that's true then there wouldn't be a better player in the league to "fix" him than Nathan MacKinnon.

Whoever the IDIOT is who suggested such a thing - isn't going to be an 'NHL executive' for very long.

That's not going to 'fix' anyone... feels like a guy trying to push Anaheim's agenda.

CMac is obviously looking for an upgrade to Mitts. I have my doubts he'll find one this TDL.
I have no doubt he will.

Compher was good and we won the cup with him.

What has he won? Nothing. Also remember Georgiev last year. That's how a toxic player can f*** the whole team.
The difference here being that Georgiev sucked balls.
Having a shit attitude while being a shit player is very different than what JTM was bringing. Miller brings the shit attitude, but he also produces. He actually produces really really well.

Before you get ahead of yourself, the Avs can't trade for Rantanen.

I can't remember the exact stat, but I remember them hyping up how he was top-6 in faceoff percentage for guys that had taken a certain amount of faceoffs...well it turned out that only 6 people had taken that amount of faceoffs, and he was by far the worst of the bunch.

Edit: found it! There were 6 players that had over 1600 faceoffs in 2022-23. JTC took 1665 and had a faceoff win % of 48.8. The next worse was Crosby, who took 1846 and had a 53% win rate. What's insane is Bergeron had 1706 faceoffs and won 61.1%, that guy was so insanely good at pretty much anything defense.

The Avs really should've gone all in on Bo Horvat, his skating fits right into the team, and his faceoff abilities would've really helped
JTC embodied the powerhouse the Avs were. Versatile middle 6 who could play with speed and brought something positive on the ice.

Kadri JTC Bura were all able to attack fast and force opponents to make mistakes in the neutral zone.

Who fears making a mistake with the puck when Casey Mittelstadt approaches? Maybe a 4th grade ballet class? But not any NHL players.

Not that I think they should or will trade for him, but why couldn't they?

They traded him to Chicago, who then Chicago traded him to Carolina with retention.

Chicago wouldn't be able to trade for him due to the retention. I don't believe there would be anything stopping Colorado from doing so though.

JT Compher was extraordinary as the Avs 2C vs Edmonton in 22.

No he isn’t/wasn’t the answer to the 2C position full time. But let’s not forget what he did for this team as a 3C, but most of all what he did during the absence of Kadri on the way to a Stanley Cup in 2022.

His goal out of the penalty box in Game 3 effectively ended that series, so so clutch

It doesn't really matter who retained, but someone else retained, which would cause NHL to block any trade back to the Avs.

I keep looking at this to see what else we're getting besides Rantanen. I don't understand. Are you insane?

I also won't be shocked if Mitts is still here, but it would be dissapointing.

15 points in his past 41 games, and Colorado has tread water since the turn of 2025 (11-9-2). This club needs something big to happen.

They can easily do "Big" without trading Mitts though.

It's almost unbelievable how long they've been screwing around with these Jost, Compher, Soderberg, Newhook, Kerfoot, Mittelstadt, etc types.

Mittelstadt even in his struggles is very clearly ahead of all those guys.
