I've never heard of "Benchrates" before... probably for good reason. I'm having a hell of a time understanding their numbers...

I'm having a hell of a time understanding their name. WTF is a benchrate? Is that a term I'm not familiar with? Or do they think they're being clever combining benchmarks with rates?

Their home page is full of chatGPT generated trade proposals. Apparently we're trading Foudy and a 2nd for Brock Nelson.

The "explanation" being that the Avs "still require defensive depth to solidify their blueline" and adding a "veteran top four defenseman" would provide that.

Legit feels like it was generated based on the Stastny gif.

Benchrates are things that gearheads and computer nerds get. They put engines or computers on a test rig and get a "bench-rate" performance for them.

These dudes just seem to be smoking a ton of dope and making numbers up out of thin air.

On a certain level, I have to give them a tremendous amount of credit. They've already caused me to talk more about them then they ever deserved.

Interesting. I still can't find that term online. Only thing I can find close to it is alluding to Indian IT workers who get "benched" while they're not working.

Isn't that benchmark testing with computer performance and such? Bench-rate is a term as well?

Um... Again, how did they come up with a $8,444,183 paid contribution for MacKenzie Blackwood who makes 2.35M. Your explanation didn't do it for me.
It isn't based on their actual salary. Paid contribution and unpaid contribution have a different set of stats used to calculate them.

So whatever the formula for each only take the corresponding stats into the equation, the total would be the cumulative of all stats that they use.

Again, I'm failing to see any value in this at all.

What are they trying to say with these values?

I just haven't seen any of that in my viewings. Although I'm the first to say I don't watch juniors that much. I'm talking about my viewings of him in the NHL and at the WJC... and he looked out of place in the NHL and very vanilla in the WJCs. I just have a very difficult time seeing that change into a significant NHL player in the next season or three. I imagine he might get along as a middle sixer...but if it's here I just can't see it turning out any differently than it did with Jost, NewJost or MiddleJost. It's going to suck if he turns out to be nothing more than a RichJost.

Did Jost or Newhook really wow you as rookies though?

Jost was the same age as Ritchie in his D+2 season as a rookie in the NHL. Was probably a bit more polished defensively, but he didn't produce a ton offensively, and they weren't the kind of high skill plays that Ritchie makes.

Newhook was a year older in his D+3 season as a rookie in the NHL. So that's an advantage for him. He was a bit better than Ritchie defensively, but not as good as Jost, and still below average I'd say.

Newhook had a better U20 WJC, but Jost didn't really.

I didn't watch too much of the WJC this year, but I'm not sure Cal's lack of performance is all on him.

He played with one of the biggest puck hogs ever in Cowan the entire tournament outside the last period. The other London Knights players might have impacted his performance on the PP too.

Also, there were some reports that Ritchie looked good defensively and looked good overall after being separated from Cowan. So that's another perspective to consider.

Here's the post below.

"Ritchie actually looked quite good in the third period of their last game when he got to play with McKenna and they were working the puck together.

I feel like him and Cowan should not have been played together the whole tournament and the fact they were never split up is just terrible coaching. Ritchie would pass him the puck then look to get open to create something and Cowan would just shoot it into some shin pads. The 3 London Knights players being together on the first powerplay unit also was a detriment because they seemed to always want to create little plays amongst themselves and turnover the puck every time.

Ritchie did a really good job on the defensive side of the puck though, and was quite good in faceoffs which are 2 things I think that a lot of people here were more interested in seeing anyway."

I would assume their perceived value based on whatever formula they've come up with using those stats. So they just place a certain value on each and it gives a total value at the end.

Never heard of the site prior to it being posted here, just going off the information they have available on the website.

I'm not against stats by any means. But I think they have to mean something more than what these dudes are doing. This just appears to be a list of players with arbitrary numbers assigned to them.

If they can't solve the 2C mid-season, just back up the Brinks truck for Bennett this summer. Guy's a gamer
I would love to have Bennett play for the Avs. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’d get him for long before we get the Bednar wont let the psychopath play like one version. If Bednar isn’t here anymore come July that changes things

He's a vet, a champion and a proven 2C option. Exactly what this team needs. The contract is guaranteed to age poorly, but we need to stop getting so hung up on age. The youth movement strategy clearly hasn't worked.
I'm not going to argue aginst the intangeables, but he has never crossed 50 points and has only crossed 20 goals twice.

These are just people trying to 'create' a stat like corsi and hoping it catches on. (unlikely)

I really cannot wait until some nerd develops the 'advanced stat' for goalies for not giving up a goal at the worst possible time - can't wait to see it. (I think I'll be waiting a long f***ing time)

As always - advanced stats have their place and their usefulness but they NEVER tell the whole story. Those who believe they can get a 100% clear picture with those alone don't truly understand the sport.

I'm expecting a bunch of deals to be announced today - probably starting around noon.

We'll see if these GMs who have been sitting around for 10 days - actually got some work done.

To Col:
Kadri, C
Andersson, RD

To Cal:
Mittelstadt, C
Malinski, RD
2026 1st round pick
2025 2nd round pick
There's some retention here right? Something that Calgary rarely does (they cheap)
