Just read speculation article on local hockey web regarding Avs, talking about Trent Frederic and Sam Bennett as possible trade alternatives. Not sure where that came from, if its just some conjencture/speculation of the author of the article, or there were any rumors, anyway havent seen those names mentioned here - though havent read every single post.

Bednar wouldn't like Bennett too much. Prone to taking dumb penalties, extremely physical, more of a dump-and-chase, puck retrieval guy. Funny how he languished for years in Calgary and then busted out in Florida.

Do you think Kylington could take that spot? Or does he still have a lot to prove?

I wouldn't mind him or Sam Malinski as the #6
If Manson was next to him then I would think so. But for the playoffs I think I'd prefer someone who can PK well. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on the position with term; bottom pair LHD's are easy to find at the deadline each year for a mid-round pick so that would be my route. Spend the money higher up the roster and then fill the bottom pair at the TDL.

Also if a bottom pairing guy like Soucy has a bad year you have a bit of an anchor on the bottom pairing which is hard to move. Buying guys at the deadline can ensure you pick up guys who are healthy and playing well close to the playoffs.

Vegas has 6 D making 2+
Carolina has 6 D making 3+
NJ has 4 D making 3+ + elc
NY has 5 D making 2+
Winnipeg has 3 D making 1.xx and 3 very close 5+
Dallas has 6 D making 3+
Washington has 6 D making 2.5+
Florida only has 3 D making 2.5+
Toronto has 4 D making 2, but also 4 fwds making 11
Vancouver has 5 D making 3+

Yep, they should be targeting trades like Tampa was when they were at the peak of their contention window. Pay extra for guys with term on good deals.
That hasn't worked so well for them. Trying to aggressively pay for excess contract value is a good idea in theory but it hasn't been great in practice. Hagel has been a decent player for them, but Tanner Jeannot was a disaster they moved on from quickly.

I would love for the Avs to be even more aggressive, but that also requires an ownership group willing to take on riskier deals and possibly buy them out or retain on them, which is unfortunately not an advantage the Avs front office has.

If Manson gets pushed down to 3RHD they need to go cheap at 3LHD, and with Manson on the right they'd probably prefer to have more of a puck moving type at 3LHD which is the easiest position to fill. They could even give Behrens a shot though I suspect he'll need plenty of time in the AHL to get back up to game speed first. Anyways, point is that spending $3.25m is probably a bit excessive for that position given how easy it is to fill it.
Behrens injury was a damn shame. Not only is it a pivotal developmental year lost for a very promising prospect, he would probably have already played his way into that #3LHD slot already and we wouldn't need to be having this discussion.

They won the cup twice following the acquisitions of Coleman and Goodrow. I think that strategy worked well for them

I don't really think they were so much about creating excess contract value with those two trades per se, they were just trying to change their dynamic and add depth, which they did (they were also damned lucky, especially with Coleman). Once the cap necessitated them breaking that entire third line up, they opted for paying exorbitant sums for players specifically with term and lower AAVs, and that's where it hasn't really worked.
