Rumor: 2024-2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency Talk | Part Deux

I mean, I think there’s no question that a Mitts-JTM swap is there if the Avs want it.

Rutherford alludes to a 2C or even 3C return.

I saw an interesting trade proposal the other day on Youtube of all places. It was from a Canucks fan/channel:
  • To VAN: Colton, Mittelstadt, '25 2nd (NYR), '25 2nd (CAR), '27 2nd (COL)
  • To COL: Boeser, Miller
At the very least, it's a fun proposal to discuss.

I know people have already said but with the depth in the forward corps defense might be the urgent need. Maybe in this order

RD bottom 4
LD bottom pair
2C to push down the depth chart keeping Mittelstadt depending on target.
RW depth as nuke insurance/depth
Trade/LTIR bad fits cap constraints (Colton/Wood)

RD:
Seth Jones? (depends on retention and trade pieces)
Jacob Trouba? Fully retainted would he be useful or just full goon now?
Rasmus Andersson, how much will he cost if available?
Michael Kesseiring, can he be pried away for the right package?
Rasmus Ristolainen, is he useful for what we would need?
Scott Mayfield, would he be more effective than Manson for 2nd pair?
Ivan Provorov, off hand but useful?
Conor Murphy? Something out of left field like Colton/Malinski for Cernak?

LD:
A lot of options around the league to better stabilize the bottom pairing.

C:
Brock Nelson, he would be ideal and if retained wouldnt even have to move Mittelstadt.
TJ Miller/EP40, I think they would at least need to check on this situation.
Sidney Crosby, pipe dream
Nazem Kadri, would he be available if Calgary remains in the hunt?
Jean-Gabriel Pageau, would he be more effective than Mittelstadt or would just be good depth? Similar with Gourde.
Is there anyone else available that would move the needle?

RW middle six depth:
Oliver Bjorkstrand, saw him on one trade list.
Alex Tuch, is Buffalo going to sell off pieces?
Lawson Crouse, will Utah sell for the right package?
MIght not be necessary or practical if Landeskog comes back.

Can McFarland retool further after the Rantanen trade? How many more trades are practical without disrupting the team?

There is a cap in place lol. That's like 14M for 9M.

Shockingly the cap (nearly) works.

Colorado would only be $138K over, with (3) guys on the bench. That's due to cap hits decreasing as the season moves along.

What? Yeah, I'm confused.

f*** the Caps lol

To be clear, we’d have 5m in cap space if Kylington went on LTIR or was dumped.

That’s with a 23 man roster, meaning two scratches up front and one on D. Could be more cap space if we wanted to run it shorter.

So this is with Landy's LTIR, ok, I get it.

Do those two like eachother lol? Boeser has had some inconsistency issues, but he's a sniper.

What? Yeah, I'm confused.

f*** the Caps lol

Why? It’s easy lol

We have a hair under $4m in cap space right now.

Scratches tonight: Nichushkin, Middleton, Wagner

Nuke isn’t on IR.

Kylington is on IR, not LTIR, so his $1m still counts right now.

You blast Kylington to the moon and send down Wagner. That’s another $1.8m in space, making it approx. $5.8m cap space with 22 players. One scratch up front and one on D.

JD - MacK - Marty
Lehky - Mitts - Nuke
Rosco - Jacko - Woody
Kivi - Kelly - LOC
Parsnip

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
de Haan - Malinski
Middleton

Blackwood
Wedgewood

$5.8m cap space.

My brain does not default automatically yet to Landeskog is not returning until the playoffs. It's getting there though.

Doesn’t have to.

Wood has a 6 team no-trade list. Can trade him to one of 25 teams without his approval.

$5.8m + $2.5m Woody = $8.3m
$8.3m - $7m Landy = $1.3m

You can slot Landeskog in for Wood and still have $1.3m in cap space.

I'm kinda surprised the Avs haven't pushed harder for a guy like Bjorkstrand. No doubt he's a Bednar favorite.

I don't know how much Tuch has left in the tank but he's a big guy with wheels and scoring touch. I think he'd be a perfect fit with the Avs.

Murphy is currently hurt, depending on just HOW hurt, he'd be a good target for Colorado.

I wouldn't get Pageau, he was a fantastic 3C in his prime, but that was a while ago (watch him score a hat trick on the Avs tonight).

I thought the 5.8M was using Landeskog's LTIR. As in we're currently using 1.2M of it?

Yeah I definitely like a guy like Tuch or Bjorkstrand playing on the 3rd line when Nuke slots in and good enough for the top 6 if something happens.

Yeah I wasn't sure on Murphy hes not on LTIR so you would think there is a chance.

Pageau doesnt have too bad of numbers and still kills it on FOs, but havent seen him play a lot lately.

Who would be your ideal top target?

Hey, you make that deal and the money we saved from the Mikko deal, it ends up being pretty close to even. All I know is:

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Pettersson - Necas

Might be just as good as

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Kadri - Rantanen
I would love this pretty much. It would be beginning of something beautiful :-D

Though i cant see how we could possibly fit Pettersson with his 11,5 million salary, if we could not fit Rantanen, who would have likely required maybe 1 to 1,5 million more.

I liked Saad back when he played for us
I was saad to see him go. But not sure i would want him now.

Man...good question. I'm not really sure.

Honestly, if there's a center out there who can back up 29 and won't totally torpedo the cap situation, I think they gotta try for it. Can't say for sure who the targets would be. Nelson? Kadri? Pettersson? I'd be okay with any of those guys.

I'd like a better #4 defenseman too, I'd assume Manson would have to go the other way for cap purposes, just someone who'd be able to supply reliable defense and physical play who isn't jumping into the goddamned play every five seconds. Is that Murphy? I dunno...again, I'm not the biggest fan of CM, and he'd be a speed downgrade from Manson for sure (though he also wouldn't be wandering aimlessly either).

Mittelstadt would definitely be going the other way. That covers half of it. I'm not too sure our trade offer would be particularly attractive to them though.

So your priority is the center? Or are you saying they absolutely need both?

Hard to say. I don't think they're a legit contender even if Nuke were to come back in. Something needs to change even more than what we've seen.

I think they finally addressed the gigantic 3C issue about the best they can. They've addressed the goaltending as well as anyone has the right to expect. So now it's a depth issue, and whether or not Mittelstadt and Manson get themselves sorted out.

I also have next to no faith in the third pairing at present. Any combo of de Haan/Middleton/Malinski just ain't cuttin' it.

Most immediate need is 2C though. If there's a way to upgrade that tomorrow, I think ya gotta do it. Defensive depth should be addressed somehow but that needs to be looked at.

So you take no stock in Mitts recent improvement?

I think we're all on the same page as far as the third pair. The only way you get the top pairs minutes down is get Bednar a 3rd pairing he can trust. Has to happen, zero question. And soon..

The pride of Mount Brydges, Ontario… standing 6’4”, weighing 215 pounds… three straight 20+ goal seasons… speed, physicality, defensive prowess, big shot, net front and board demon…

…LAWSON CROUSE makes me feel some sort of way.

Dream acquisition. I’ve always loved how he plays.
