I don't think there's anything realistic Chicago could offer us for Mikko...Well someone did say they offered Rantanen to go to Chicago or Carolina. Reasonable to assume. Chicago was evaluating a big offer for Rantanen too. And Cmac used then to handle the money instead since everyone was already talking and they wanted to get rid of Hall.
I like the 'Jones is still in play' alternate reality better though.
I don't really think that's the case... Drury is by far better value for money, but Kotka gets insane hate because of his contract and draft position. He'd be a real solid 3C somewhere, but the dude just isn't a 2C. We'll also see about Drury... but I have my reservations about him being a 3C. But he should be a great depth addition regardless.Yeah, Drury is a better player at a fraction of the cost. So so much better.

Yeah the contract isn't great... but even then it wouldn't be THAT bad if he was your 3C. He's pacing for 38 ES points this year and is pretty decent defensively. If he was your 3C you'd think he'd maybe be making a little too much, but even then with the cap shooting up 4.8 for a 3C won't be that outrageous here soon.Actually KK is playing better, still don't want that contract, not even a little bit.
He brings more offensive skills, but Drury is a much better skater and a much better defensively. KK is kind of stuck in between a top 6 and bottom 6 type player and really doesn’t have the profile to slide into either.I don't really think that's the case... Kokta is pretty decent defensively though. Like I said Drury is clearly better value for money, but I think the "meme" or whatever of Kotka has people thinking he's worse than he is.He brings more offensive skills, but Drury is a much better skater and a much better defensively. That’s fair. Either way, Drury is a much better fit for the style the Avs play.Kokta is pretty decent defensively though. Like I said Drury is clearly better value for money, but I think the "meme" or whatever of Kotka has people thinking he's worse than he is.

Good post by you.Yes, he's not been great lately, but honestly - what depth player is consistently playing at the top of his game across 82 games? If he did, he would be a top line player, not a depth one. He was great early on, not so great now. He'll probably be pretty good again this season.
Colton's contract is not bad. Nor is Manson's, btw. They're mid-tier/2nd tier players, but good ones. They bring a physicality to their game that ups the $$$. Good players with some flaws. Precisely the "depth players" we'd be begging for if they weren't here. Precisely the "depth players" we currently want more of right now.
Colton is a ~20g/40pt guy (across a 82 game season), who plays a relatively simple (and physical) game. Those attributes/numbers get guys ~$4M per. That's the market. We've got two of them, they're pretty good, all things considered, and we'd be begging for them if they weren't here.
I can't fathom the people who gripe about Manson and Colton at $4M, claiming they're the problem. They're not.
The problem is 2C. Mittelstadt. Period. End of story. That's the problem.
And if they don't solve that problem, none of the rest of the story matters.
P.S. This is why I don't get the Jones discussion. The Avs have a formidable Top 4 defensively. The Crosby discussion I get. Though I think that's a pipe dream.
They still have few years contention window. If they don’t win the cup this year and can’t re-sign Mikko, they have to find another star forward. So unless they get lucky and a UFA star forward becomes available which they sign, they have to give up more assets to trade for a PPG star forward. The futures assets they would get for trading Necas would be similar to what they'd pay to add a legit goal scorer for this run.
They needed that shot threat badly. Which we know is why Mikko is valued so much higher than Necas.
Their core is also aging just like ours. Wasted years are hard to swallow.
Totally understand their side of the trade.

As far as the bolded, we do have a very good Top-4 especially when Manson is playing well. The problem is, for the past little while - since returning from injury - he really hasn't played well at all. He's also often injured and 33 years old with only 1 more year left on his contract. So if he's injured when we're heading into the playoffs, with our lack of quality depth, we are in trouble.
Acquiring a player like Seth Jones, who's 30 with another 5 years left on his deal would stabilize our Top-4 for a good long while. It would give us options and a 'safety net' if there's a significant injury during the playoffs. That's the way I see it.
Jones is good. Not a cornerstone of a defense good. But he's good. Kinda how like Seabrook was back in the day. Seabrook would not have been "good" if he was your best dman, but since he was the 2/3D on the Hawks it never mattered.Based on the game I'm watching Jones is worth 7M.
7 points in his last five and a goal on the power play tonight.
I totally understand why they traded for a guy like Mikko. They just have to try really hard to re-sign him.You can see why Mikko, and the Finnish connection was a shot they'd take though.

I’d be shocked if they can’t make it work.I totally understand why they traded for a guy like Mikko. They just have to try really hard to re-sign him.
I do really hope he stays in Carolina because I wouldn’t want him to end up in west and possibly central division.I do think they'll have to bend more than we would, but they can if he slides a counter across the table.
I think Mikko signs an extension with the Hurricanes within 2 weeks from now.I do really hope he stays in Carolina because I wouldn’t want him to end up in west and possibly central division.
Agree with this. In the end I kinda like Manson's presence in the playoffs. Sure he isn't what he used to be but he is tough as nails. Those guys become more valuable in the playoff games. The Avs aren't going to trade Manson.
It's more likely they acquire someone to add to their group and it 'relegates' Manson as their #5D.
After their run and during the off-season, they may decide to trade him and find a cheaper replacement though.
Now...if we trade Miles Wood, do we need to bring in Kiefer Sherwood again to bring balance to the force?
