Because they obviously aren't going to trade EP for a rental
I know lots of you are salivating over Jake Evans...

I'm not so sure about that. Blockbuster trades involve pending UFAs all the damned time. The Rob Blake trade was a rental, the players heading the other way IIRC were not. And yes I realize that was nearly 25 years ago and pre-cap, but I'm not convinced they wouldn't do it.

There would likely have to be some sort of assurances he would sign, yes, but I don't think it has to be a sign-and-trade.
Well that's pretty much the same isn't it? Whether he signs first like Tkachuk or later like Huberdeau it doesn't really matter. They'd make sure that he won't walk before pulling the trigger on a trade like that.

Tocchet was hired to Vancouver in late January 2023. Between Jan. 23rd 2023 and Jan. 23rd 2024, Elias Pettersson scored 109 points in 83 games.

Between Jan. 23rd 2024 and today, Elias Pettersson has scored 58 points in 76 games. If you include the playoffs, it's 64 points in 89 games.

Tocchet is not the problem with his production. The problem is Elias Pettersson.
Yeah, I know he was good to start, but I also don't know just how Tocchet ran things in Vancouver. Dan Bylsma reportedly did next to nothing in Pittsburgh when he first took over, just sort of went to the players and said "just play" and they did so all the way to a Stanley Cup. I've been told it wasn't until later that he became more hands-on and implemented the systems he wanted, and that's when things went south. Mind you, I've only heard this from a couple fans, I've no idea how true it is, but there's usually a honeymoon period with new coaches, and we're clearly past that in Vancouver. Tocchet employs a horribly conservative shot-blocking system that doesn't leave a ton of room for offensive creativity. Even Miller, who previously shined under Tocchet, is starting to buckle.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not particularly fond of Tocchet either as a coach. I think his style is way too defensive and boring, and requires way too much attention to detail from the players.

But to put the blame on him for this slump EP40 is having? Not having that.

Who's talking EP for Rantanen??? lmao that's never going to happen. Vancouver may not even make the playoffs and I'd be super surprised if Mikko signs before July 1st.

Truthfully I don't even think the Avs have the assets to land EP. Van is going to want an absolute blue chip prospect ++

6M is around 6% of the cap next year and will be even less with each passing year. That is very good for a high end 2nd pair defenseman.

You and I have every different opinions of what a high end 2nd pair dman is. Jones is low 2nd/high 3rd, but you factor in 6m? Heck no.

At that point, just wait till the off-season and try to get Ekblad, or Provorov, or Pionk, or Gavrikov, or Chychrun, or Lindgren, or Pettersson, or Savard.

I think it's playing a part but I don't think it's all on him. Again, I still feel like there might be a lingering injury of some sort, which is quite worrisome given how long his play has dipped. But also, yeah, EP40 might just not like the way things are going with Miller and Tocchet. Whether that's a bigger stain on him or the other two guys, I'll leave for you to decide, but I don't think it's just one thing holding him back.

I'm gonna say Calum Ritchie is absolutely a bluechip prospect.

Yeah, I know what he has been able to do in the past. But he has been in a year long slump now.

I compared him to Mittelstadt in the sense that out in Vancouver the discourse around Petterson has been EXACTLY the same as we've had with Mittelstadt for a while now. Yeah, no shit EP40 is better than Mittelstadt. He's also the 5th highest paid player in the league, and been producing at a worse rate than Artturi Lehkonen.

We all though we had solved our #2C position a year ago when we acquired Mittelstadt. None of us expected a downfall like this. And now you just want to completely ignore clear warning signs from Pettersson?

There's a reason there was basically a 50/50 split between EP40 and JT Miller about who to trade, despite EP40 having the higher ceiling and being younger. A lot of people are afraid that he already peaked, and this is what he is going forward. And if the Canucks front office is seriously shopping him, you can ask yourself, why? Could it be, that they also think that way.
Or could it be that the Canucks are making a massive mistake and choosing J.T. Miller again the way they did when it came to Miller vs Horvat?

Could it be that Pettersson doesn't want to play for a GM who publicly calls him out?

Pettersson is fine. His production will pick back up, his analytics demonstrate as much or else he'll be the most unlucky player in hockey.

Mittelstadt is simply not a comparable. His underlying numbers are a disaster. If Canucks fans think Pettersson as he is has peaked and it's all downhill, I can't wait for them to experience J.T. Miller getting older.

I think they'd have to lineup a three team trade. Or who knows maybe Mikko is all about the money @ 14 x 8.

I bet Colorado could use Carolina to facilitate the trade too.

Necas / Mikko / EP based trade

That'd be wild.

Yeah, don't even tell Vancouver we're involved like Tampa did to get around that in Division or Conference tax.

This is obviously assuming Mikko absolutely refuses a reasonable contract. I'm taking EP all day, as someone else mentioned you may see the #1C role change over time as Mack ages.

He has been unlucky for a full calendar year. That just doesn't happen.

I don't give a shit what the advanced stats say. If you are the #5 highest paid player in the league, and producing like that, it's simply unacceptable. Mittelstadt is playing great in comparison when looking at production and comparing the caphit.

If you want to just call him "unlucky", go ahead. If he's that unlucky, I don't want him.

Lol, then don't give a shit what the numbers say. Guy who loves to defend Rantanen getting the short end of the linemate stick choosing to ignore who Pettersson plays with at 5v5 is hilarious.

Pettersson is still nearly PPG since 23-24 while being very good defensively.

We were also at their game against Carolina on Monday.

So, two straight games of us scouting them.

Six straight games of Chicago scouting us, including two Eagles games.

GMs and multiple scouts involved.

🤔

Yes, but wtf were our GMs high-fiveing for? This is not getting enough attention. I don't think we even had much reason to high five in that game.
