I’d have to imagine a Jones trade means Manson going. I just don’t see how the cap fits.

Does anyone have the slightest ideas how much space we have?
I think we have about 4 mill right now with Landy, Wood and Poolman on LTIR

I don't know if they would have moved on "long ago". He came back November 15th, played 21 games then got "injured".

You gotta find a dance partner to make a trade.

Both those contracts line-up the same with an expiration after the 2029-30 season.

My bet is that if this gets done, he's going the other way.

I disagree. They need a player they can count on.
Nichushkin can burn a teams chances in the playoffs, so he's high risk for a contender. But for a team like Chicago who would be happy to just make the playoffs there's less risk since him missing regular season games wouldn't be anywhere near as impactful as getting suspended in the playoffs.

I find it weird that Chicago is showing so much interest and we think that it will be for a small/smallish move.
it doesn't make sense to me to putt so much effort in scouting the Avs/Eagles for weeks to end up with nothing....
Maybe Davidson just loves him some Colorado River. Guy’s only human

With everyone healthy, and Landy on LTIR for the rest of the season, the Avs have roughly $2.6M in cap space. Trade Colton + Malinski + Kylington and get Chicago to retain like $1.5M -$2M and they can aquire Jones. Would leave them with roughly $400k - $900k in cap space.

Even better, get a 3rd team involved to retain another $1M.
When has a team retained for 5 additional seasons, nevermind as a third team?

Considering Jones' remaining salary, that third team will take on a total of roughly $4,5 million in real dollars by retaining $1 million of his $9,5 million AAV (10,5%). $41 million in his remaining 5 years + however much it will be of his $12,5 million $$$ this year.

$4,5 million might not be a 1st on its own, but it could be 2nd's, or maybe a Gulyayev, if that team likes him.
Getting a third team to retain on his contract is completely unrealistic, borderline delusional, imo.

According to Capwages an PuckPedia, Avs have $4.591M in space with Landy, Wood, and Poolman on LTIR.

Once Wood comes off this week, some time, it drops by $2.5M.
Yup, so I’m not sure how we can trade for Jones unless there is big retention by the Hawks and we send them someone from the roster, like Manson or Mitts. I don’t think Hawks would have interest in Manson since they’re rebuilding. They probably would want picks, prospects or younger players back. Maybe we can trade Mitts for Jones, then trade for a 2C in a different deal

If Jones does end up with the Avs then Malinski would probably be going the other way, or at least used in a separate trade. Makar/Jones/Manson/Malinski would be overkill and it makes sense to try to keep hold of Manson for another playoff run and then move him in the off-season when capspace is needed.

It's hard to gauge what fair trade value would be as it all hinges on how much Chicago are willing to retain.

Personally I think the noise last summer regarding Nichushkin and Chicago has credence. Something like this makes sense to me:

Nichushkin ($6.125m) + Malinski (~$850k) + B prospect for Jones ($2m retained/$7.5m) + mid-round pick/prospect.

That would explain the Chicago/Nichushkin rumours last summer when the Avs reportedly tried every possible way to trade or terminate Nichushkin. It would also explain why they'd be scouting both the Avs (Nichushkin and Malinski) as well as the Eagles to choose which prospect they like (eg. Ivan/Olausson/etc).

Nichushkin + Malinski + prospect for Jones retained + pick/prospect leaves this playoff lineup:

Drouin - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen - Mittelstadt - Landeskog/TDL fwd
Wood - Colton - O'Connor
Parssinen - Kelly - Kiviranta

Toews - Makar
Girard - Jones
Kylington - Manson
DeHaan

Blackwood
Wedgwood

2C is still a question mark and forward depth could be improved but that's a strong lineup (when healthy).

If we get Jones, I think Manson will likely be gone. Maybe not to Chicago, but using Manson in a different deal to get a center. They’re not gonna pay Manson 4.5 mill to put him on a 3rd pair, and we would need the cap space.

No way we should trade Val. Look how mediocre this team is without Val, and how much better they are with him in the lineup

I mean if we are talking about Jones heavily retained to replace Manson, that should be an enticing deal. Jones at say 5.5M (or even less) as your #4 D-man for the next few years? Hell yeah.

You have lost your minds. When's the last time Seth Jones was good? Six years ago? Seven?
The fact that Davidson scouted more than one Avs and Eagles game in person, and has been seen chatting up CMac in the booth at Ball Arena has many speculating that there is a bigger deal in the works, not Taylor Hall.

As others have pointed out, the last couple times Davidson was seen doing this, he's made a pretty significant trade soon after. Add in the rumors that this past offseason the Avs and Hawks were discussing a Nuke for Jones deal, and you get the speculation on Jones now.

Of course, we could all be way off here, but usually where there's smoke, there's fire.

That is a lot scouting for just a B prospect (Ivan) and Malinski playing only one game out of all the games they scouted.

Offer up Rantanen.

The problem is how can they get better?

The way I see it the team had their core foundation in place and they had two big chips. Those two big chips were the Byram and Newhook picks. Which turned into Mitts and Colton.

And now they need to upgrade from Mitts and Colton. And also from Manson.

Lehkonen is the other logical trading piece. Not sure what else moves the needle.

When is the last time he’s been on at least a semi-competent team?

When’s the last time he’s had a dman on his team better than him?

You think he's going to magically improve at the age of 31 because he'd be coming to the Avs? A team that's in cap hell and incapable of playing three good games in a row?

Now, if they retain a chunk of salary and take back Miles Wood's sorry ass.....
